I'm on Firefox these days. You'd think Firefox would have built in RSS too. Please, web browsers. Bring back the RSS button 😭

Does anyone know how this could affect Brave? I've suggested it for non-tech Google Chrome refugees who find Firefox difficult to use.

Interesting take I can appreciate, but hold on there...

This community here seems to have largely sided with ScarJo. Which means that they want famous people to receive a rent for lending out their voices

I dont think that's what they mean at all. I doubt people care about ScarJo growing her bank account. I think most people who side with ScarJo just dont want Open AI stealing stuff it doesnt own, including people's voices. Especially if they're profiting off it.

This is an interesting perspective, and I very much see how people can have it. Totally agree that the internet just isn't like it used to be, arguably for the worst, depending on who you ask.

As much as I hate these big tech platforms, the issue isn't that they're doing what they're doing. After all, capitalistic societies (especially the US) don't just ignore it, they actually encourage this sort of "money above all else" mentally that a lot of these CEOs and shareholders have. So what platforms are doing shouldn't surprise anyone. Maybe some of it should be made illegal, but I'd argue making new laws still won't really address the problem.

The real problem is that we (everyday people) need to take more responsibility over the mental health of ourselves and our children and just stop using this brain-rotting software. We can complain about what they're doing to humanity all we want, but if we continue to use these platforms, we're just making it easier for them to do the bad things they do.

@mark@programming.dev avatar

Genuine question: how do we actually "kill the big fish" though? Majority are going to continue to use big tech out of convenience and because they dont care much.

mark ,
@mark@programming.dev avatar

Not condoning it, but all I can think is how terrible Facebook is for "coordinating" stuff like this. I mean, if FB or the feds wanted to find out who these people are, track them down or something, they can do that pretty easily. People who do stuff like this aren't too bright, though. So not surprised, I guess.

Why isn't Rumble an option? Genuinely curious. Is it because it's not open source? or federated or something?

mark ,
@mark@programming.dev avatar

Yeah I'd personally like to see more regulation and cases fighting for privacy rights instead, especially here in the US.

Google says pause ads on YouTube are getting a very positive reaction from advertisers

Bc screw the users and their reactions 😄.

We really need a good YouTube competitor. This is beyond ridiculous at this point.

Lawsuit alleges Grindr illegally shared users' HIV status, sensitive data with third-party advertisers. (www.theregister.com)

Hundreds have joined a UK class action lawsuit against LGBTQ+ dating app Grindr, seeking damages over a historical case of the company allegedly forwarding users' HIV status as well as other sensitive data to third-party advertisers....

I get the sense that most people on this platform get it. It's the people that would never even be on Lemmy to see this advice that I worry about. Those are the ones that need to keep seeing these posts and comments like yours.

RSS has no adoption anymore

Not true. RSS feeds are the only thing I use these days and know quite a others that do as well. Sure some sites may not have RSS feeds by default, but there are a ton of services that auto generate RSS feeds for you.

mark ,
@mark@programming.dev avatar

So don't use RSS then? No one's trying to convince anyone to use RSS if they don't want to. I was just correcting the validity of the original statement.

Speaking of, does anyone know how best to block YouTube ads on my Sony TV? It uses Android and I have the YT app on it.

Ah yes! Thank you. Will try this today

X automatically changed 'Twitter' to 'X' in domain names, breaking legit URLs (mashable.com)

On Monday, it appears X attempted to encourage users to cease referring to it as Twitter and instead adopt the name X. Some users began noticing that posts viewed via X for iOS were changing any references of "Twitter.com" to "X.com" automatically....

I really hope this is sarcasm. I couldn't imagine basing my friendships solely on whether or not they use Twitter.

Yeah, depending on the branch I've found that method not to be too reliable. openrss offers branches for RSS feeds for commits on every branch though: e.g. https://openrss.org/github.com/octokit/octokit.rb/commits/main

IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states (arstechnica.com)

"Direct File provides a free, secure option for taxpayers with simple tax situations in 12 states to file their taxes directly with the IRS," the Treasury Department said. "Direct File is easy to use, with no hidden junk fees, and works as well on a smartphone as it does on a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. Direct File...

Haha this is only their attempt to collect more data (than required on taxes) on US Citizens. Look at the process to sign up. It's obvious. If they really wanted to help the population file their taxes, they would just not require filing at all. They already know how much we make, so they know what we owe. At most, if liability is an issue, they should be sending us the tax information they already have on us and we just check off if its correct or not.

It will be fixed. It's gov. So baby steps. The EU is working hard and it's going to be a while before we get everything we want.

mark ,
@mark@programming.dev avatar

It's pretty obvious they're only doing this to try to push people who like the recommendations to create an account. But can't people just create throwaway accounts to temporarily relieve their recommendation fix?

Their recommendations are useless anyway. I don't want to see 200 rock hard abs videos just because I watched a clip of Roseanne doing sit-ups.

This seems to interestingly prove the point made by the person this is in reply to. Breaking laws come with consequences. Not caring about a robots.txt file doesn't. But maybe it should.

The top five RSS readers for keeping up with your news feeds (www.theverge.com)

RSS readers allow you to collect the articles of specific sources in one app, making it a lot easier to find the content you’re interested in without crawling through a lot of noise. RSS (which may stand for Really Simple Syndication, Rich Site Summary, or one of several other possibilities — nobody seems sure) has been...

Yeah. Anything worth developing takes up quite a bit of time and doing that for free doesn't really work out for many devs. Only one I can think of that's close to what you mentioned is maybe Thunderbird?

Hey OP, I'm doing some research. You mind sharing that link in the description of your screenshot?
