They won’t repeat the horrific thing they did while dead, that’s for sure.

I’m against the death penalty but it’s not hard to see why some people support it.

metaldream ,

Of course it doesn’t, that’s such a condescending question.

The obvious response is that the perpetrator has a 0% chance of reoffending if they’re executed and that does carry weight with a lot of people.

metaldream ,

Taking their money away isn’t enough. These billionaires often have deep connections to people who could easily help them regain their wealth and power. I’m not sure what the answer is but taking the money won’t solve the problem in every case.

metaldream ,

Neither of those permissions should be required for an app store. If someone wants to check for updates manually they should be able to do that.

metaldream ,

Never buying a Roku product ever again. Their TVs used to be a good deal but I’ll play a premium for something else next time.

metaldream ,

Ubuntu doesn’t use unity anymore, their default UI is a GNOME shell with some extensions. It works pretty well imo. Not that different from gnome itself

metaldream ,

They even link to the alternate desktop environments on their site

metaldream ,

I don’t get it, I’m on iOS 17 and can move them around? I came from a pixel and I was surprised that you could. And you can also stack widgets which is nice

metaldream ,

You’re talking to a bunch of geeks. There’s nothing wrong with the default pixel launcher. I used it for years. Most of these people have a butt ugly home screen and all kinds of ridiculous customizations that no one else has time for.

metaldream ,

Sounds like it must be some advanced alien tech but I think I’ll be alright without it

metaldream ,

HDR is plug and play windows, you just need to turn it on in the settings

metaldream ,

Forbidden West in HDR is absolutely fucking incredible

metaldream ,

Your comment was in the past tense though. I had issues with hdr on windows 10 but not windows 11.

metaldream ,

There is a microwave technique for drying weed if you want to smoke it quickly. It will taste extremely green though. There’s nothing you can do to replace a good cure.

metaldream ,

They also created TypeScript which is a huge improvement over js imo. And with C# you can use Mono, so you really aren’t locked into MS automatically.

Plus, they made VS Code free. I hate MS but they do make solid tools for developers.

I'm very sick of hearing about nuclear from Reddit/lemmy. If it was a realistic, affordable solution we'd be doing it. But it's not. It just seems like it is to the layman.

There's a reason the market and governments went all in on renewables and it isn't just paranoia about nuclear accidents. Building a nuclear plant takes ten years minimum and it's incredibly expensive, and has a lower margin for profit. In that amount of time governments/companies can build tens of thousands of renewable energy stations.

The issue of waste from solar is real, but the fact is even with that waste it's done far more to reduce emissions than nuclear ever has or ever could.

metaldream , (edited )

It’s hilarious how utterly delusional you are lol. Yeah you go ahead and keep telling yourself that an oil industry conspiracy is pushing renewables over nuclear and not the fundamental economics of the situation. Nuclear isn’t and never will be a realistic solution to climate change.

Also— your own article states that the fastest nuclear reactors were built in Japan. Well guess what, that’s bizarr because Japan skirted all kinds of safety practices to build their reactors and that’s how you get garbage plants like Fukushima. All of the new reactors getting built now are planned for ten years or more, which your article also confirms.

And no, you are blatantly wrong that only paranoia is getting in the way of nuclear. Countries aren’t building nuclear because it makes no fucking sense when you can generate the same amount of power for far cheaper with renewables. Renewables are also serving as the baseline power source all around the world and they do the job just fine. Nuclear isn’t needed.

It’s obvious you’re just another rude, know-it-all douchebag who is actually far more ignorant on this topic than you realize. Straight to my blocked list.

metaldream ,

Literal malware techniques. MS learned well from all the viruses that infected Windows in the 2000s

metaldream ,

It's so much better than it used to be though. There's been a lot of real progress and there's more interest than ever in creating a viable Linux consumer-grade desktop among foss developers and even corporations.

I'll grant you it's definitely not there yet for non-techies. But I do think we'll get there eventually and I wouldn't have said that 5 years ago.

metaldream ,

They only support their hw better on phones and tablets. On a computer you'll longer support from Windows or Linux LTS distros. I have a 13 year old laptop still running the latest version of Ubuntu

metaldream , (edited )

Some zoomers and some millennials know it. Boomers don't know or actually think it's a good thing, with some rare exceptions.

Either way your take is extremely juvenile and simplistic. There's a lot more at play with revolutions than people knowing their country did something bad. It takes a lot more than that to get people off their ass, with very few exceptions historically, and even those exceptions are usually led by rich people looking out for themselves.

People need to have their own livelihoods threatened before they do anything. And there are always power systems in place that deliberately make it hard for people to organize.

metaldream ,

That people don't know about because it isn't covered in the media unless you actively look for that info. So it might as well have happened a long time ago

metaldream ,

He pulled it from nowhere because tankies are incapable of nuance, especially if you hold an even mildly dissenting opinion. You're either with them or against them, there is no in-between. It's ironic how much they share in common with actual fascists.

Redditors Vent and Complain When People Mock Their "AI Art" (futurism.com)

Setting aside the usual arguments on the anti- and pro-AI art debate and the nature of creativity itself, perhaps the negative reaction that the Redditor encountered is part of a sea change in opinion among many people that think corporate AI platforms are exploitive and extractive in nature because their datasets rely on...

metaldream ,

Isn't that what the person you replied just said?

metaldream ,

Nah this is just an epidemic of lazy people who want the credit of being called an artist without putting in any of the work.

metaldream ,

They didn't say that though? The last paragraph made it clear (to me) that they were saying the end result isn't the only part of at that makes it impressive, but also the effort/skill involved

metaldream , (edited )

It's crazy to me that this got 61 upvotes while the main concern here, that 30,000 unrelated people had their data handed over to the government, is just an aside in point 1.

It really concerns me that people think any of this reasonable. If this is "reasonable" then there's nothing stopping cops from getting all of our data, whenever they want it. All they have to do is find one suspect who watched one video.

That's fucking crazy and clearly unreasonable. Take my downvote for having an exceptionally bad opinion on this topic.

metaldream ,

Why would you make up a reason to justify the government seizing people's data? Like damn I thought lemmy cared about privacy but this thread is wild with some of the comments I'm reading.

They were videos about using drones and AR to create maps. There's nothing illegal about that.

https://mashable.com/article/google-ordered-to-hand-over-viewer-data-privacy-concerns

metaldream ,

There's the little sm things like airdrop as well

metaldream ,

Samsung support is also a straight up scam. They'll lie to your face about how they're getting ready to send you a replacement, and then ghost you. I hope the feds sue them too but I'm not holding my breath. We filed a complaint with our state's AG and fuck all came of it.

metaldream ,

You do realize that you can like iPhones and Apple products while recognizing that a lot of Apple's business practices seriously hurt consumers, right?

I also don't think they'll lose. They have a ton of evidence of intentionally anti-competitive behavior from Apple.

metaldream ,

The act of retaliation is the part that's a felony dude, not banning someone's apple id.

metaldream , (edited )

I don't understand the issue. Why can't they just call the Android API when the user wants to view their weather? I'm just not buying that this would be so costly to the battery life that it would be unusable.

I am buying that apple wants to keep their walled garden and they're making up excuses to do so

And the linked Bloomberg article straight up says they cancelled the project because the Apple Watch drives iPhone sales, lol.

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

metaldream ,

Let's say you do this. Now you just need to buy a slave labor-free phone, car, TV and hundreds of other items. Not to mention you're paying taxes to a capitalist government.

Anyone who thinks you can escape the consequences of capitalism while existing in a capitalist country is just full of it. It's like the leftist version of sovereign citizen nonsense

metaldream , (edited )

Buying a used Thinkpad doesn't change the fact that it was made by slave labor. It might make you feel better to buy one, but it changes absolutely nothing. You still bought an item made in part by slaves or near-slaves. And you're keeping the market alive for that to continue.

metaldream ,

All your options are "capitalistically aggressive". It's a sign of immaturity to me that people think they're above it all while still being totally and utterly dependent on capitalist economics. Acting like buying a fair phone makes you better than others is just laughable. It's a drop in the bucket compared to all your other unavoidable contributions to capitalists.

Not to mention that many of these "better" options are only available to people with money, which makes the entire claim even more ironic. Many of us going this "alternate" less aggressive route can only do so because we benefit from inequality in the first place.

Your argument in no way refutes the point the comic makes.

metaldream ,

Buying anything in a capitalist country makes you a consumer.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

metaldream ,

I see it on my pixel 5a on Android 14 as well. Guess that solidifies my decision to move to Apple once this phone dies
