Some neo-Nazi mouthpiece in Germany got stabbed before a scheduled speech, and some Lemmy comments are all 'oh now you're just giving them what they want.'

I mean, if that's what they want, they're welcome to it. Drink your fill.

Lanes weren't even the right thing to build. Exits reduce congestion. Rarely is a whole city just jammed full of cars on every street. The issue is distribution, and if people are doing 1 mph in a 70 zone, they'll happily slide out to where the speed limit is 35.

mindbleach ,

Some libertarian dingus put up his cleverest puzzles in search of suuuper geeeniuses, who could singlehandedly get on his level. Then he threw a tantrum and took it all down because it turns out people are smarter when they work together.

mindbleach ,

In that framing, what are Homestuck comparisons?

mindbleach ,

Riffing on John Mulaney: Tumblr will insult you in a way that is accurate.

mindbleach ,

He understood propaganda. Just not the fact he was awash in it.

mindbleach ,
mindbleach ,

... not really? Mulan is all about a woman pretending to be a man, which is genuinely distinct from being a transdude. She spends most of the movie in military drag.

If this extremely 2013 Tumblr shitpost has any issues misrepresenting queer people it's down to nobody acknowledging bisexuality. Which we're honestly used to.

mindbleach ,

Ping tops.

mindbleach ,

Not remotely comparable. Mulan is gender-non-conforming. Bridget in Strive is GNC erasure - possibly just to appease Chinese censors.

It's also the polar opposite of what the character was about. Bridget was already a trans allegory. By virtue of a coin toss, Bridget was assigned female at birth. Nearly every encounter in Midnight Carnival started with getting she/her'd and immediately correcting people. Bridget's entire storyline was hunting bounties to man up. This was a cute character in a pretty blue dress literally kicking people's asses to be treated like a dude. The writers going "whoops, nevermind" is not growth!

Now there's twenty years of forum exchanges going 'she's cute!' 'do you like surprises?' that were effusely queer-positive and taught a lot of dudes about the Kinsey scale... but in the absence of a timestamp, would be viewed as outright bigotry. This change was bad, actually. This was possibly the worst character to do this with. Johnny being trans would fit better. Fem-Johnny being a womanizing lesbian who still doesn't wear a shirt and keeps that jacket closed by sheer force of will would warrant little more than a "huh." Like how absolutely everyone heard Testament was nonbinary and went, "well, yeah." The only reason you can casually allude to discourse about Bridget is because there's a serious underlying discussion about gender in commercial fiction.

Chinese censorship is part of that discussion. China has cracked down on queer representation and "effeminate men" in particular. Strive came out the year China applied those TV and movie restrictions to video games. Strive has patched out mention of regions and countries the CCP doesn't like to hear about. I'm glad you enjoy where Bridget's story went, but it probably only happened because of an autocracy keeping its populace narrow-minded.

And yet the worst part is missed opportunity.

We've never seen Bridget's family. They don't even have names. There is an identical twin out there who could have been a drop-in replacement but happened to be trans-fem - and butch as fuck, because their idiot parents got it completely backwards. We were robbed of the twink icon, and some new short blonde terror.

Obligatory: "Ranked Choice" is a specific use of ranked ballots. It's subpar. It beats what we're doing now, but anything beats what we're doing now.

What you want is a Condorcet method like Ranked Pairs, where the winner is whoever beats everyone else. RCV just picks whoever can scrounge together 50% first. RCV would not elect a candidate who is literally everyone's second choice. Ranked Pairs would.

The simple alternative is Approval Voting, where you let people check all the names they like. It matches Condorcet results... somehow. There is no good reason we're not using it everywhere.

mindbleach ,

You owe it to the country to not hand our government over to fascism. Voting for the immediate alternative isn't a blood pact.

mindbleach ,

Fuck your analogy.

One of two people is going to be in charge of the country seven months from now. You can have the boring liberal with an awful allegiance to a questionable ally run by a power-hungry bastard... or you can have our very own power-hungry bastard, who is also going to give the aforementioned bastard everything he wants.

Don't choose more evil.

mindbleach ,

Your worst-case scenario is how things currently work.

Realistically, people will just ignore that shite advice, and vote for as many people as they feel like. It works out on average.

mindbleach ,

Approval is trivial.

Ranked Pairs has the same ballots as Ranked Choice and it works the way people think ranked ballots work.

RCV has momentum primarily because people keep using the name to mean "ranked ballots."

mindbleach ,

"We'll not-vote and then they'll give us what they want!" has worked out sooo well in the past. Eight years of W. Four years of The Idiot. Are you happier now, having lived under those disasters? Is the DNC more in-line with what you wanted, compared to Gore and Hillary?

mindbleach ,

If you don't vote against fascism, you allowed fascism.

But the government is doing an investigation against universities to root out “wokeness”.

Which is a course of action rooted in politics.

Specifically, fascism.

Twitter's trying pretty hard on its own.

Even the people sticking around because they have followers keep getting banned. Guys: if you have to start a new account, do it somewhere better.

Lemmy is bizarrely fond of useless censorship, and I think it's because .ml has a bunch of filters. Which is hilarious. Yes folks, we expect to reach a stateless society with no firm hierarchy, and all boundaries decided by the people. The admin has decided you may not say fuck.

mindbleach ,

Where else is that remotely normal?

The drawing fails to capture his plague-doctor brow.

There's jobs you can fake your way through in a week and there's jobs that take six years to not kill people.

The cliche example is fast food because you really can do it badly on day one. Literacy is optional. English is negotiable. That's unavoidably distinct from jobs that require higher math or high voltage. The fact a surgeon would do worse at flipping burgers than anyone who's worked retail does not change how people skills and sticktoitiveness are no substitute for recognizing a tumor by sight.

We will always need a way to describe that gap. You're welcome to suggest alternatives.

mindbleach ,

First time I've gone "no way is that show only fifteen years old."

Ohhh, FMA Brotherhood, not the first one. I didn't realize Fullmetal Alchemist ran out of manga. Like a Hellsing situation. But with a budget.

mindbleach ,

That's a definite trend. Blame HD video. Circa 2000, computer production made traditional animation a lot easier in a lot of ways, but you could still only see it on 480p-ish CRTs. You could draw more frames, but that was a lot of work for fractions of a second. You could do better shading, but that was a lot of work for every frame. Visual quality needed immense budget increases to get much better.

But analog audio could be fucking incredible. Stereo, sure, but uncompressed, and a tiny fraction of a video signal's bandwidth. Even VHS was just shy of CD quality. So anime from that era threw serious money at musicians and got some killer scores. Yoko Kanno alone nailed a dozen of them.

The economics of that shifted with high-def. Screens got larger and closer and massively more detailed, so individual drawings could do a lot more work. Couple that with CGI getting good enough to get away with (sometimes), and digital drawing tools getting waaay better, and this visual medium produced by hundreds of draw-ers loses sight of why sound matters. We went back to a musical score being background noise.

Honestly even live-action movies have suffered from this. See criticism of Marvel movies' bland spec-work scores, where they pre-edit to some existing music and then tell Danny Elfman to copy that homework.

mindbleach ,

In context, "black" doesn't mean brown, it means not white. Where whiteness is a shifting political concept defined by exclusion.

To the goddamn KKK, sometimes it just meant "catholic."

mindbleach ,

Literal death of the author.

mindbleach ,

"Those countries reflect poorly on socialism."

"How dare you, they're not really socialist."

mindbleach ,

Words mean what they're used to mean. Even the word "government" is wildly different between Europe and the US. We flip out over headlines like the government of Belgium has collapsed! and it's only as much of a kerfuffle as the House trying to elect a Speaker.

mindbleach ,

But when the same things happen under other systems, that's different.

mindbleach ,

... would you be happy in prison, on the basis that there's food and housing and you can take correspondence courses?

  • and most importantly no fascists in government
