Reminder: The DMV uses photos for facial recognition

This is half a decade old news, but I only found this out myself after it accidentally came up in conversation at the DMV. The worker would not have informed me if it hadn't come into conversation. Every DMV photo in the United States is being used for AI facial recognition, and nobody has talked about it for years. This is...

This attitude is what lets the government and big tech get away with so much bullshit.

“Well it’s happening already so crying about it isn’t going to change anything because you know that protest has never ever been effective even once ever and I kinda like the taste of boot anyways so what’s the big deal?”

I’m not blaming you for the state of the world, I’m blaming you for taking your fatalist nonsense and using it to try to bring down others with you.

I would be way way more excited about this if I could actually use the iPad as a dev machine rather than just a big web browser.

Gimme a full terminal, let me run containers, open up installing full Mac apps, and I will buy one today to replace my aging 2017 MacBook Pro.

Of course, then their “product differentiation” vanishes and the shareholders make slightly less money…

It’s so frustratingly close to perfect too. It has a great screen, is more than powerful enough for all my dev work, it’s super portable, I can plug it into a monitor via alt mode, my Bluetooth keyboard works great on it…

It is like right there to being my favorite device, but the crappy mobile OS relegates it to sitting unused on my desk 85% of the time.

Really the only thing I use it for is CAD work via Shapr3D.

Or just “request desktop website”.

I follow the Bluesky devs, I feel pretty confident that they are excited and taking their role in building a protocol and platform seriously.

I’ve yet to see a board of directors that wasn’t a joke anywhere though, so I guess I just assumed that this would happen everywhere.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

I’m currently learning Japanese, and one of my favorite things right now is that the “normal” phone keyboard for Japanese is basically a t9 on steroids. It gives you this grid with huge buttons, you tap a letter or swipe in a cardinal direction to get a variant. E.g., the button will show か (ka) and swiping will get you く、け、こ、き (ku, ke, ko, ki).

It is super intuitive and with like a few minutes of training I was typing faster on it than my English keyboard (albeit with my very very limited vocabulary). The buttons are so large it’s hard to miss.

If you happen to be on an iPhone, you can add the profanities of your choosing to your dictionary manually, and it will stop autocorrecting away from them.

Now I never duck when I mean to fuck.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

Oh it’s my time to shine! I just installed bazzite onto my ROG Ally yesterday.

It is pretty fantastic so far. Not perfect but very good.

Also, it doubles as a pretty OK developer machine because it comes with buildutils, unlike the steam deck. I was able to get my Nix dotfiles set up on it and do a little Rust work to try it out.

Why is the picture for this url showing “tally, a free way to make forms”? Is the website really using opengraph social thumbnails to display ads?

Edit: Never mind, the linked page has a link to tally in it apparently… which is still not really what the OG links are for, but it’s far less irritating than what I originally thought.

What were the challenges they faced? The article outlines that they faced insurmountable issues but didn’t state what those issues were or what they did to try and mitigate them.

I am about as far away as one can be from Florida while still residing in the US, and it’s just not far enough.

natecox ,
@natecox@programming.dev avatar

I’ve been using it as my primary for quite a while, it’s pretty awesome and the development pace is pretty good.

I’m not really a fan of the lead guy, some of the comments he’s made on the forums are less than great, but the product is top notch.

Some interesting moderation choices that suggest a lack of support for the LGTBQ+ community, a business partnership with Brave, and a really shitty take refusing to add help numbers for self-harm related searches.

You can get the cliff notes of it from this post and comment to it: https://lemm.ee/comment/8016834

It is indeed disappointing.

natecox ,

I would argue that the new answer is still bad.

The search results were top notch before adding Brave, indicating to me that they aren’t really needed.

“People complain about all of them” is probably a factual statement, which is why evaluating each source independently is valuable. I don’t think it justifies completely dismissing criticism.

Thank you for validating my feelings here. I don’t know why we idolize this kind of behavior, but berating someone on a mailing list should not be acceptable, much less desirable.

natecox ,
@natecox@programming.dev avatar

I live by the “there are no heroes” philosophy myself. You can like some of what a person does while admitting that they are still flawed like the rest of us.

Way too much of the tech industry culture is rooted in idol worship.

It was a happier time, I miss my atomic purple floppies.

I rewrote that several times because I have the mind of a child, but atomic purple 3.5” was even worse so I give up and you get to enjoy both.

This layout makes sense if you have used an old school mp3 player or similar.

Volume is left and right because it’s an analog of the volume bar on the screen.

Up and down is previous and next because play was controlled by a list UI so you were moving a cursor up and down between songs.

It’s not how I personally would prefer it, but it’s not as outlandish as it seems.

natecox ,
@natecox@programming.dev avatar

Every mp3 player I owned in the 2000’s worked this way. Screen above, controls below, list UI for tracks, usually volume rocker or dial on top.

Sometimes the UI would be more complicated and would include a left/right button for navigating horizontal menus (like my all time favorite Zen Vision:M) but the basic playlist was still a vertical scrolling list UI.

Well, I feel old.

3.5” floppy discs which have been removed from their plastic shells.
