I can't believe people buy cheap trash that would be sold on Temu.

But here we are, people buy cheap ass trash off Temu. If China started picking through the trash we shipped them and sold it back to us on a site like Temu, something tells me people would still buy it.

I installed the app, did initial setup, then forced it to never update, shut off internet access, and disabled notifications. Still seeing the discount nearly 3 years later.

In the last 6 months:

  • One Drive reinstalled and turned back on on my personal & work computer multiple times.
  • AI Co-pilot added to my machine and enabled "so you can start using it now!" with an obtrusive pinned shortcut on my start bar, to both of the same machines but at different time intervals. Uninstalling is virtually impossible and requires registry mods to 'remove" it. Not even a powers he'll command can remove it.

I don't want, or need, this add-on garbage.

MS PowerToys has a Search feature that works like Mac Finder called PowerToys Run.. And it works as you'd expect it. I've largely started using that over the standard windows search, and the difference is hitting win + space (default: alt + space) instead of win before typing my search.

This is more likely a coverage issue than Walmart illegally blocking wireless signals (per to FCC regulations).

Report the coverage issue to Verizon and your local Walmart. Both of which will want to increase coverage of where people are gathering. This is because if bad coverage areas are in places where people gather this will cause affected people to switch services or stop going to those gathering areas if there's alternatives.

  2. There's ways for stores to work with telecoms to get service broadcast inside the warehouse/building as well to get around the natural passive blocking from the building materials.

Umm.. People have been using the phrase "Direct message (DM) me" since forever in the game and online comms world. Private message wasn't a concept until after DMs were later encrypted. And we always knew, that if we didn't control the servers, even encrypted, those messages were subject the server operators.

You're right. Had to dig into my memory for this one and fact check myself.

IRC, BBS, and most forums (of the era) used PM or SP. MUCKs and a few other tools used Whisper. ICQ introduced "IM me". Part of me remebers using the term "DM" for IRC messages, but I used IRC fairly regularly well into the 2010s.

However, the forum I spent a ton of my younger years on used "Direct Messages" which has likely polluted my memory. Since it was a technology related forum, that was probabaly a customization from the operator to distance everyone from the idea of "private" since everything was clear-text and unencrypted back then. That or I'm confusing "IM me" from the ICQ/AIM/MSN days.

Point being, nobody thought "PM" meant secure and not visible to the server operators back then. It just meant that only you, the recipient, server operators, and 1337 h4xx0rz could see your messages.

What a trip down edited memory lane that was. Thanks for fact checking me.

Do one of the following:

  1. Tell your mother you're not comfortable hosting that type of content as a non-believer.
  2. Lie and hand back the propaganda movies and say you couldn't rip them to some unknown rip protecting they use and there's not enough resources online to figure it out.
  3. Host the content and let your mother liver her life and don't say anything.

I'd personally use option 1, but you do you.

There's one feature that win11 has over win10 that I wish was there, and that's the default layout manager is superior to windows 10's, and less fidgety and better hotkeys than what's offered with Power Toys. Especially vertical monitor support, which win10s layout manager never got an update for. And as a Tie-Fighter monitor setup user (4k portrait, WQHD landscape, 4k portrait) having an effective layout manager is crucial.

However, there's 3rdParty layout managers that are even better than the win11 implementation. Butt to be able to get the default support of an effective layout manager is quite nice.

That said, that's the only feature I really like aside from some nominal improvements/optimizations to background systems (network stack, Bluetooth management, "game mode") and services. That's not enough for me to transition when there's so many other things that were done to make it a worse experince.

I'm excited to transition my personal desktop to PopOS once win10 reaches EoL. Maybe Valve will drop their latest SteamOS in time for the Win10 EoL hoping to attract all those gamers on non-TPM 2.0 supported systems that are still great gaming rigs. I know I'd at least give it a go.

I switched off of Firefox because of those memory leaks. I remeber when it hit the tech news circles when the community contributer that was frustrated with them went in and fixed two of the biggest culprits.

Then I just didn't bother til somewhat recently. For the most part, it's great and does what ilI want/need. Biggest complaint is that some UX overhauls are needed for Mobile FX, especially around tab management.

Firefox had some major memory leaks when Chrome first launched (2008). It became noticeable with the more tabs you had and the longer the browser was opened. This was also during the days for consumer systems with 16GB max RAM & 32GB on higher end enthusiast systems.

We also have to remeber that this was 10 years before Google removed their "Don't be Evil" motto, and there was still a great deal of trust that had been earned by tech professionals.

So when Chrome came in, had a minimalist UI (for the time) and was light weight and memory light without any obvious memory leaks, it was a performance boost for a toooon of users.

Chrome has since become a memory hog and is now being developed and pushed by a company that has become heavily enshittified & evil. Firefox has become lightweight, memory efficient, and is an FOSS product that's not evil and enshittified making it the right choice in 2024, but is going to be an uphill battle that hopefully more tech professionals move to as Manifest V3 becomes a reality.

Ooof. I remeber using light pens in the 80s at a dumb terminal at my local library to find books. It was painful...

Dumb terminals were extremely prevelant throughout the 80s and into the early-mid 90s. Most people just didn't know that they were "dumb terminals" and either just thought they were early desktop computers or just heard them referred to as a "terminal". That same library didn't update their dumb terminals to actual computers until the mid 90s, but they did however remove the light pen in favor of a keyboard at some point well before then.

I switched on my personal devices (need to use chrome for gsuite integrations at work).

On desktop, it's great and I'm loving it. And kicking myself for not switching back sooner after the massive-years-long-memory-leak was finally fixed a few years back

On mobile, it's mostly great. The privacy focus, ad block support, and plug-in support is a plus. But I realllly want the tab groups that mobile Chrome introduced a while back. That had such a great mobile UX that I've found myself still loading up chrome now and then when I find myself wanting that UX. I looked to see if there were plugins that could make that possible, but was disappointed to see none and let down that it seems impossible with the current tab implementation.

Years ago Firefox had a massive memory leak that would wind up crashing FX randomly or just crushing your system resources. The bug persisted for years. and I swirched to Chrome to get away from that poor experience. A few years back, a random community contributer, that was also fed up, dug in and fixed several issues responsible for the leaks. I remeber thinking that I should give FX a go again, but didn't until relatively recently.

Windows 10 & 11comes pre-packaged with generic wifi and bluetooth drivers that work with the vast majority of the common chipsets.

If a device has forgotten which driver it has, re-aasining the generic driver should be enough to get you operational enough to go grab any advanced drivers for extended device functionality.

Also, as an FYI, I had a fleet (~150) of decommissioned machines (probabaly 20-30 different model over 5 makes) I was converting into a Linux(Deb) distrubuted node automation farm. The amount of times I had to go find drivers (network interfaces were the cost common) that supported the hardware that Linux didn't have default driver support for was prevelant. That was a very long 2 weeks.

What I'd really love to see more of is tech co-ops and unions.

With the current wave of corporate tech layoffs, I'm seriously surprised I'm not seeing more movement on the tech unions. Not so surprised I'm not seeing many co-ops since that business model is rarely used, but really should be invested into by more smaller tech shops. Additionally, unless you're an AI startup or some other buzz-tech startup trying to grift the trend wave, the investor money has mostly dried up outside of a few people that have actual knowledge in the space and understand that there needs to be more diversity in the tech space or else innovation stifles.

I umm, think you could possibly get 50-70% more salary jumping companies fairly easily. $67k (base) is sorely underpaid for a skilled data center engineer. A quick search confirms my suspicion that a data center engineer makes on average ~$145k a year.

Petabit/byte is not a buzz word.

We use bits, megabits, terabits, and petabits fairly standardly in tech.

That's not to be confused with bytes, megabytes, terabytes, and petabytes. Server farms will contain Petabytes (PB) of data.

Technically there's also exabit/byte, zettabit/byte, and yottabit/byte as we continue to climb the chain of technical capabilities. It's estimated that the internet overall has nearly 200 Zettabytes(ZB) of information in 2024.

Researchers and low level technology engineers tend to work in bits. I don't have access to the full journal publication to verify, but it's likely that the journal publication used that number and that the Gizmodo author/editor that choose the title just didn't bother converting it to more "consumer friendly" terms.

However, the author did boast that it would be "125,000,000 GB!". So I'm gonna go with that this was an AI written article and doesn't really know what a technology reader would actually prefer to see.

Gamergate started with "The Zoe Post", not the removal of jailbait.

"The Zoe Post" is a hit piece from an Ex-boyfriend of game developer Zoe Quinn that alleged that she slept with a notable game reviewer to get positive reviews for her game. Said reviewer never actually reviewed her game.

Please don't re-write the history of these events. Especially since jailbait had been removed for around a year when "The Zoe Post" dropped.

I vividly remeber this time period and witnessing these events unfold live. I lost a good deal of people I considered friends at the time due to the misogyny that rose out.

You're right though, gamergate followers were radicalized by what we now know as the "Alt-right".

TBH, I never dug into rational wiki. However the timeline is fairly accurate from what I watched what happened to my friends both in the game industry and my former friends that were gamers (hint, i worked in games when this shit was unfolding).

Unfortunately, no other "timeline" source exists, with Wikipedia starting its paragraphs of history with Zoe Quinn creating Depression Quest, and many many other articles starting there as well. Some people like to attribute a slightly earlier event of a handful of journalists critiquing gamers over their reactions to the Mass Effect 3 ending, but that doesn't really fit with how quickly things snowballed after "The Zoe Post".

Hungarian kitchen? Wtf does this mean?

I grew up in a 2nd generation Hungarian American family and we cooked tons of cheap, and amazing foods. Goulash, paprikash, and pierogis are all "pesant/farmer" foods and are cheap as all hell, not to mention they boast amazing flavors. Additionally you can explore regional and family variantions on the recipes and never run out fresh experiences.

As somebody that's been working on computer hardware since the early-to-mid 90s, installing the drivers before connecting the printer was the norm. It was actually the norm for most peripherals. Just be glad you didn't have to do manual irq assignment. Hell, that is probabaly the issue, is that the driver installer borked the irq assignment when the device already had a handshake agreement with the hardware.

I digress though, this shouldn't have been the pattern for a modern printer in 2007, when PnP had been standard for several years at that point.
