Twenty plus years we could have shared pop culture. If it was on the radio or popular cable TV, maybe many people saw it. But now there's too much information, period. Everyone specializes. If you expect people to know their memes, you're pressuring them to consume the same media they do. Not cool.

So, float the meme, why not. But expect it to flop. Be happily surprised when it doesn't.

orcrist ,

That is definitely not true these days. Too much internet out there.

orcrist ,

No no no. You can just post and hope that it complies with the rules that you didn't read, and then if someone takes it down, you have the choice to either complain or cope.

orcrist ,

No. It's not "just rioting". Try that again without the value judgment.

We see this type of hidden judgement on a regular basis. The key words are "just" and "only". It's an annoyingly effective rhetorical device, because the statement looks like an objective description of things when it's not.

orcrist ,

As you pointed out, this is partly a matter of interpretation. So opinions could reasonably vary, and I respect that.

I believe it's clear enough that in this case, saying that the situation is just a riot, is a way of taking focus away from the other things that were happening. Perhaps it wasn't a riot and then turned into one, and maybe we should be focusing on what happened first. Or perhaps there was a riot happening along with something else, and that second thing is worth mentioning.

orcrist ,

What mistake did you make? That's definitely relevant, since the definition of "mistake" is playing a major role.

Are there any WYSIWYG html editors? just curious

Hello, i was looking for a wysiwyg html editors i could use for my personal website, perferrably just as a simple open source desktop program on linux (though anything else is fine). i DID find something called KompoZer but i was wondering if there's any other ones, thanks

orcrist ,

Depending on your situation, you might consider a totally different setup. For example, you could install WordPress or anything vaguely similar to it.

orcrist ,

If someone is injured or killed by a Tesla car, they can sue the company directly, regardless of any legal agreements you may have as the owner. Whether they win is a different question, but they might win if they could show that Tesla was negligent, and especially if Tesla was willfully negligent.

Just because you think you're responsible, even if you agreed in triplicate that you're responsible, doesn't necessarily make you legally responsible, depending on the circumstances. And that's the way it should be.

orcrist ,

That really depends on the condition of the pan. I've had some where power tools were insufficient.

orcrist ,

Don't worry. They feel the same way about you. :-)

orcrist ,

Right, that is your experience. And I'm telling you that there are cast iron fry pans that can defeat wire brushes, both manual and ones you attach to your power drill. (Of course it's up to you if you want to believe me. There's no particular reason to believe some random stranger online, but then again, there's no obvious benefit for me to lie about it.)

orcrist ,

Prosody claims to support Message Archive Management and HTTP file sharing, sounds like the feature you want, or at least it is close.

orcrist ,

What do you even mean? By that standard everyone is obnoxious.

Or perhaps you think the lightweight religious folk are magically less obnoxious? I dunno.

orcrist ,

What makes you think he's scamming them?

orcrist ,

That depends what you think the greatest threats to quality of life for the average in American are. I believe the greatest threat is the corrupt system, which gives more power and money to the rich and screws over almost everyone else, and both of those candidates are firmly entrenched in it.

They both know and embrace their role in that system, although they would phrase it in different terms.

Finally, you asked about objective terribleness. But there is no such thing. This is all subjective, because of course it is, the country has hundreds of millions of residents who all have different priorities.

orcrist ,

Right but Photoshop has a horrible UI too. So maybe if you want similar features, you have to pay the price in time spent learning it.

Of course if you don't need the features, great. Update your post with what you actually want to do.

orcrist ,

Sorry for trying to be helpful. Have a nice day.

orcrist ,

Nothing I wrote was condescending or shamed the person for asking what they asked. Unfortunately, people like you live in technical forums all across the internet. You make a snap judgment that an on-topic focused response is an attack when it's not, and you decide to play the white knight. Meh.

Take care, my friend.

orcrist ,

Patriotism is such a terrible thing in general.

orcrist ,

I don't think you need to be patriotic to want to defend your country from fascist invaders. That's a purely practical consideration if nothing else.

orcrist ,

Same here. We gotta aim for the younger generations.

My guess is that your society has the same problem to a much smaller degree and you just don't know about it.

    LovesTha , to Fuck Cars
    @LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@fuck_cars Something I wish Australia would change is laws prohibiting any vehicles between a 200W ebike and a full motorcycle. I'd get a lot of value from a 60kmph limited 1kW ebike. But currently to sell such a thing it would have to comply with all motorcycle requirements, and things like ABS on both wheels is really not required for such a device.a

    orcrist ,

All of those are wonderful questions that should be answered within the next X months by the appropriate government agency. And of course it's not just in that state in Australia. We see variations of this in many places around the world.

So although I think you were trying to ask those rhetorically, actually we all agree with you, those answers should be forthcoming.

    orcrist ,

Ah, the classic "U" argument, that the fringes of the right and left are the same. It's a cute but damaging myth.

    orcrist ,

Many middlemen are getting played, too.

AI hiring tools may be filtering out the best job applicants (www.bbc.com)

an AI resume screener had been trained on CVs of employees already at the firm, giving people extra marks if they listed "baseball" or "basketball" – hobbies that were linked to more successful staff, often men. Those who mentioned "softball" – typically women – were downgraded....

    orcrist ,

This is not any kind of modern "AI". This is a fancy version of "key word filtering". It's been done for decades. Why, tech writers, why must you not use your brains when writing these articles? ... We aren't going to believe a word you write if you can't get basic facts figured out.

    orcrist ,

You can. It's just not new, not news.

    orcrist ,

It really isn't though. This is a pretty weak stereotype. I have so many friends that are counter examples. Hey it's okay to make a meme if you want to have fun but if that's how you feel then your friend group is small.

    orcrist ,

Your mom invited me to an orgy last night, so I'm good.

    orcrist ,

You think preventing climate change is more expensive than not preventing climate change? That's an interesting point of view. I'm not sure the facts agree with you.

Wildfires that burn down houses and gigantic forests every summer, massive storms that take out coastal cities, that kind of stuff tends to have an expensive price tag attached to it.

It's easy to forget, but the most effective first step for individuals who want to prevent climate change is: Reduce. And that costs nothing at all. It actually saves money. Of course there are many other things that ought to be done as well, but let's keep in mind the starting point.

    orcrist ,

You think consuming less would stop the economy dead in it's tracks. And ... Is that a bad thing? As we know, "economy" means "rich people's yachts".

And just as obviously, reducing consumption is not binary. There's no way to go to zero, nor would anyone seriously propose it. But anyway, with an increasing population and limited global resources, it's inevitable that people will have to reduce at some point, so the disaster you hypothesize would strike us anyway. And in that case, gradual change now is better than catastrophic change later.

    orcrist ,

Reusing? I thought we were talking about reducing. And I don't think anyone is talking about reversing.

    orcrist ,

You don't get to pick and choose what Fox News has said in the past. Their position is that climate change is vastly exaggerated and largely a hoax, and depending who you talk to they might have a stronger view.

You don't get to forget what they said in the past and present and choose a totally new position, where the main focus is on hypocrisy. Because if Fox News believes what it has said for the last 20 years, then the actual reasoning is that Taylor Swift is acting hypocritically but it's irrelevant. In other words, if they want to have integrity they would need to undercut their own story.

You personally are free to have a position that purely focuses on hypocrisy if you haven't already made public statements on climate change. But Fox News is stuck with positions it has already endorsed and continues to endorse. I mean we know that Fox News has no credibility but if you thought that they should, then this is something they can't avoid.

I think there are two separate issues.

The first is that you're introverted, and you need to learn how to communicate that to people in a reasonable way.

The second is that your workplace clearly encourages communication, and you have an issue with communicating. To some degree, you will need to adjust your expectations. You might think that your job duties are XYZ, but in reality, many of your bosses and coworkers think your job duties are XYZ as well as chatting with people around you, within reason. If you express your needs effectively, perhaps you can adjust that "within reason" to mean "less than now but not zero".

    orcrist ,

You fell into the trap that this post is exposing. Of course personal action matters, everyone knows it and there's no chance we'll forget it, but the heavy polluting companies want to focus our attention on that alone, to keep it off of themselves. Please don't assist them in doing so.

    orcrist ,

That all depends on the industry in question. I'm not sure about Shell.

But the key point is that regulating individual action, or focusing on individual action, is only a small part of the problem. We need to focus on the big polluters first and foremost. And we know who they are, even if we don't know exactly how to parse the data.

    orcrist ,

Don't believe that. It's just an excuse to avoid saying the real reasons, the ones they know are not cool.

    orcrist ,

I'm 100% feeling YouTube's throttling. It has already led me to watch fewer videos.

    orcrist ,

Yes and no. Fascist governments aren't pointing their guns at big companies.
