What does that mean. What does "the year of the Linux desktop" mean, really? And why is it different than last year?

orphiebaby ,

Cool, but didn't everyone tell me I should use Mint, for a bunch of reasons including "it's arguably the most beginner-friendly"?

orphiebaby ,

That's all fair advice. It doesn't change that installation instructions should have been a lot more thorough.
Once I get a third (or bigger primary) SSD, I'll dual-boot Mint. I still want to try it. Regardless of my issues with it, I do know Linux is getting better. And we can see how ready I am for it now (and that's partially up to the software).

orphiebaby ,

I see. I'll look into it, thanks.

orphiebaby ,

Oh, thank god. Plasma looks good for me. Easy to look at and professional. Assuming I understand how it works, which popular distros can use Plasma? Update: After some quick research, I think I want to use Kubuntu? Does that sound like a good idea?

It's news. That's all that matters.

Also this is actually a pretty unique and interesting scenario. You ever seen a digital embargo of software from a single country imposed on citizens? Not to mention the dignity and rights violations on both sides...

orphiebaby ,

Wow the comments and upvotes/downvotes here are stupid.

orphiebaby ,

I mean, regardless of semantics about whether it's new to us or not, that's still news.

They are among the top five richest corporations in the world and the leading employer in the world, last I checked. You going to dissolve that power? No? They have money and power, they will make the rules. You have to either find a way to dissolve them (good luck with that!), or you have to have another big power structure to keep them in check. That's how it works.

orphiebaby ,

You're a good parent.

The Architect lacks morals, but I will take an intelligent and not-specifically-malicious (nor greedy) being like that over Zuckerberg. Because of who he was and his aims, the Architect could be reasoned with.

orphiebaby ,

Money doesn't corrupt, money just allows people to let loose on a lot of the stuff they weren't able to do. As the saying now goes: "money doesn't corrupt, money reveals".

orphiebaby ,

Sometimes I feel really fucking hopeless about the world, because anytime we want to solve a problem, we get shot down by those in power.

orphiebaby ,

Anger is bad for me, too autistic. Honestly though, I don't feel hopeless for very long. Actually I'm channeling what I can into a novel.

Still, all your advice is good and appreciated!

orphiebaby ,

As an autist who doesn't always catch sarcasm, I have to ask: what alien robot downvoted you?

orphiebaby ,

Did you have a stroke? O:

orphiebaby ,

Haven't had cable nor streaming services my entire life, and I'm 35. Though I do pay for YouTube Premium. Then again, I watch media reviewers and longform film and game essayists. And speedruns. I buy or pirate all my shows. I "own" a number of shows on Google Play, but the last several years has made me stop buying there too. Physical or piracy, baby.

Oh my god I loved Crystal Quest. I thought everyone forgot about it

Why do all the new TVs expect me to have a platform AS WIDE as the fucking thing?? Fucking shit!! God awful absolutely dumb thoughtless design choice (lemmy.world)

luckily this is just a 32; i had a 70 from the same brand with the same INSANELY FUCKING STUPID STAND DESIGN that i had to find something for....literally at the most extreme edges of the thing, what the fuck is this? this is so fucking stupid, it cannot be meaningfully cheaper than a proper design and it looks fucking dumb as...

"Get informed"

Bold of you to tell people to do something that dangerous, Amazon.

orphiebaby ,

I'm pretty amazed that people don't immediately hear the stereotypical doucheyness, as well as the teenager-pandering, intelligence-insulting, terrible messages the moment they hear Nickelback.

Maybe I don't hate Nickelback for the same "gut" reasons the internet does, but I sure do hate them.
