Still miss port forwarding.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Wonderful software, easy payment, great rates, but lack of port forwarding is a major fallback. I understand it was due to a very minor chunk of bad actors, but that minor chunk was hosting CSAM and other horrible internet-accessible things, and no way to track what traffic is where, means they had to remove the feature for the 98% of good faith users.

But I almost refuse to use AirVPN's software. It's so... weird. I'm thankful they support wireguard with zero issues, so I can just use the default network manager and apps for Linux/Android, but that client interface is so backwards compared to Mullvad and iVPN.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That's it mainly. Port forwarding improves my torrenting enough to where I get better reliability.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My internet isnt fast enough, My average download speed for the entire place is maybe 18 MB/s, and 0.5 MB/s upload.

Torrenting helps solve the problem as I can just tell it to download in chunks and then turn it off when I need more leg room on my copper wire internet from 2003 that AT&T doesn't change.

I have some of the slowest speeds where 4G Data is a massive upgrade, so when I need to offload some jpgs to discord or something, its faster if I just send them to my phone and upload that way.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I have tried a seedbox before, but the bottleneck is the last mile of my home internet. I just have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ hooked onto my router via ethernet. I just log onto qBittorrent and tell it to go as I sleep, and turn it off when I wake up. The downloading is done already onto a spare laptop drive I have, and then I watch it via Jellyfin or sneakernet it over to a friend.

I won't say a seedbox is useless, I think it's great, but due to how my living works, it's not great. I've waited several minutes for a few PNGs to download, game updates often take hours. Not even counting how the actual fucking wind slows down my internet, due to the copper wiring being on poles like electricity. And I live in a place with so many windmills due to the natural features of the land creating daily wind storms from 4 PM until 7 AM.

I really do appropriate the advice however!

I personally use AirVPN. I detest the software client. It's open source at least, but it feels like it was made for Windows XP and just ported forward.

That said, it supports Wireguard, so making my rpi log into the VPN anytime it goes offline is simple. Same for my laptop and phone.

Decent rates, good ways of dealing with per-device things, easy to lend the account to people who need a VPN, and often has sales.

It doesn't help Adobe has software patents for their products, so anyone who makes a similar program has to either live in a country that doesn't recognize the "right" to claim you invented math, or be risk being sued.

Switch and Xbox here: Xbox can do clips and screenshots, and upload to social media with one button.

It can also send all the clips and photos to an external storage device, which is what I do so it's easy to sync clips for making edits of them for videos and jokes.

Nintendo feels so bizarre in how they handle the screenshots. "Here's a dedicated screenshot button! Good luck sending this to anyone not on Facebook or Twitter!"

When there's third party apps and programs to make the job of Nintendo and it's fans easier, they fucked up.

I know a decent amount of friends who use(d) Twitter to share moments and screenshots of after-game reports and random "aint this wild?" Moments.

And Splatoon on Switch got a big bonus from the memes the sharing enabled due to user generated content.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It took Nintendo years to enable Bluetooth on the switch. The same tech the pro controller and joycons use. Years. Modders had it nearly day one of opening the console.

How do I get a screenshot to my phone?

  • Turn off WiFi, enable it to make a temp local wifi, scan a QR code. Then open a web page and download them.

PlayStation and Xbox:

  • You can just upload them to the network you already pay for, or put them on a flash drive.
queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Syncthing is a god sent tool. Maybe I should use it for that if I can on my Xbox and Switch. I know I can for steam screenshots.

Here's a few things that are cheaper!

  • Soulseek/Nicotine+
  • Usenet Groups
  • Libraries (only if your local one has CDs, and often is popular music and no indie stuff)
    And if you want some album art: MusicBrainz Picard

If you want it on your phone, SD cards are cheaper than ever for big space. Unless you're on iPhone.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My Xiaomi phone for $400 supports up to 1 TB SD cards, so that's pretty sweet.

My landlord didn't pay for nor make the land my place is on. Nor the place I reside on. Yet he jacks up the rent every march as soon as he can, as much as he legally can.

My landlord doesn't clean the lots, doesn't clean the public bathrooms, doesn't do anything but come on by to complain about the lots he doesn't improve.

How he is providing anything but less money in my family's bank account, and an headache to everyone he complains to?

Deeply wanted to scream that each shift during the final weeks of my employment at a gas station.

Lie after lie, labor violation after labor violation, being gaslit day two of my employment. I still wish and hope that the owner of the store, Katie, keels over and dies.

And I've informed other employees (whenever I've had the misfortune of needing to step inside) about the violations of whats happening, and to report them. No idea if anyone does or even listens to me. I just try to make them know they are pawns.

Alright, I'll try to do better. I will say that while this doesn't defend my actions, I've been under a high amount of stress in the last 2 weeks. If people want, I will resign as mod without question.

EDIT: Restored the posts with "Restored due to community feedback/me being a dick."

EDIT 2: I am going to do some shopping and chores, if the community wants me gone, I will remove myself when I am back, or have the mod team boot me.

@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I will attempt to do better, but if the community wishes, I will resign as moderator due to my real life getting stressful and being a moderator here isn't going to solve real life issues.

EDIT: I have restored the posts.

EDIT 2: About the banned user IsThisAnAI @lemmy.world, they are constantly being reactionary and defending corporations at every given moment. It felt right to do it from my point of view. Right now they are complaining about "nanny state california" and that's not something I personally want in this community.

EDIT 3: I am going to do some shopping and chores, if the community wants me gone, I will remove myself when I am back, or have the mod team boot me.

Me, the mod. I restored the posts and I am willing to de-mod myself if wanted/needed by the community.

@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Mainly because I sometimes need a reality check. I agreed to be a mod here at a normal point of the last year, and the last ~5 months have been putting so much weird shit in my brain it's not been healthy.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Fair enough, but I sometimes feel like "if no one will clean up the mess, who will?" in most things in life. Small and big, trivial and actual problems. From "if I don't do the dishes, who will?" to "If there's a flood of Mod requests, and everyone else is busy, I should deal with it."

Being an online moderator is simultaneous the most trival and easy task and "I can't believe people say these things, why do I have to clean up the messes users leave with zero thinking behind them?"

I recently left a role as a voted in admin of something since I grew tired of moderating my friends and the straw that broke the camels back was during the self-immolation protest a few months back

spoiler

Two people heavily implied if not directly said that if anyone in the server didn't want to do it themselves, they are a false ally and why socialism never took root in America.

Really was dumbfounded by such a take that I screenshot the chat logs for clarity, removed the chat, banned them, and resigned as admin and told my friends "If you wanna hang with me still, I'll be here in this place, otherwise I'm done being here."

Sometimes people just say the dumbest things online, I'm one of those people sometimes.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

So funny enough, I was the person who banned them like a week before, and it was due to me not following the chain of comments. If you want, I will share the discord mod log where I found out who and any, and double-checked the reality of the situation.

Believe me I don't want transphobes running the biggest community on a trans server. But if every mod saw no issues, and I did, I assumed I was weird. And I was.

@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I try to be. Not always.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Oh I know. But I think when I'm home I'll at least leave the mod team for a month to have one less mental weight. Been talking to Moss and the others on the discord.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I'll at least be taking a break as a mod for a bit, after talking to Moss and the others.

queue ,
@queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Been a mod before, but I'm at least taking a leave for a bit to just reduce mental load. If I do stay, this is something to keep in mind.

Let's say for the sake of argument that is does remain all local. Hogging up your CPU, RAM, and Disk space, but its all local, unlike every other bit telemetry.

If it is completely local, why would I want it? What does the end user gain? I can think of what non-Microsoft agents would gain. If your computer got compromised, now a third party can see everything Recall logged. Could be completely mundane, could be private information, could be something worth blackmailing someone other.

Today I had to punch in my SSN and phone number to for my health insurance to confirm who I said I am. I don't want anyone to know that who has no direct need to.

So if it is completely local, and everyone is opt-in by default, why would I want it in the first place? What does the end user gain? If I wanted my CPU hogged up for no reason, I'd start mining Bitcoin. If it was harmless, why is Microsoft not really commenting on it on the same way they do other things like Office, Teams, Xbox, etc.

I think YouTubers make fractional pennies from Ads, and mostly only if its fully watched and sometimes clicked to go to the website. So if you get a 15 second ad, and skip to the content, you didn't give the creators any money.

Also, shout out to those ads being horrible. My first time ever installing an adblocker was during a rapid anti-smoking campaign, that had body horror. 15 year old me didn't want to smoke, nor wanted to after, but it was so disturbing that I learned how to avoid them.

Not even going into the disturbing or weird ads. One time I got an ad for a "Ching Chong Fing Fong shirt company" as a way of mocking Chinese people because their government sucks. Another time, I got a full 12 hour video by a Vietnamese couple just grilling in their backyard. No subtitles, not even sure if they were aware they enabled their videos to do that, or didn't fully understand the process of uploading videos.

Anytime I see actual ads on the internet, not just YouTube, it just makes me go "I am perfectly justified in not seeing these weird ads." I don't give them any money no matter what I do, so why not have my eyes saved from bright flashing colors and scam artists?

And still boomers in the government went after legally obtainable nicotine vapes, instead of doing anything for the fact it was black market THC vapes.

In States where it's illegal, it's still illegal. In States where it's legal, they could have cracked down on it.

And in my home state of California, they banned flavored vapes for "marketing to children" but didn't touch flavored alcohol or anything similar.
