OneDrive automatically backups folders in Windows 11 without users' permissions (windowsreport.com)

According to the latest reports, Windows 11 has made an independent choice by automatically turning on OneDrive folder backup for Desktop, Pictures, Documents, Music, and Video folders without your permission. This signifies that, whether you approve or not, everything is becoming coordinated with the cloud....

r3df0x ,

I finally installed Linux Mint along with Windows 11.

r3df0x ,

Louis Rossman is a far right extremist who promotes unfounded conspiracy theories against technical corporations.

I'm wondering how many people won't know if that's serious or not.

r3df0x ,

When I use Windows 11, I use a second local non admin account.

r3df0x ,

I wouldn't say that Gab used to be an exclusively neo Nazi site, but now that Twitter allows standard conservative discussions, all the normal people probably left Gab for Twitter and now Gab is probably more of a Nazi shithole.

I have seen openly Jewish people on Gab but you couldn't go 10 posts without finding something blatantly racist.

The transphobe Chloe Cole won't be able to use it.

If bathroom laws pass, she will never be able to use a public bathroom.

r3df0x ,

TERFs are obsessed with the idea that you can always tell.

r3df0x ,

My sister is trans and she had to deal with that. She also made it extremely obvious that she was trans but she still got Neo Nazis.

She also got banned from a dating site for saying that she was only attracted to cis women.

r3df0x ,

#1

If you're not openly trans, then you really shouldn't be dating online because that's a risk.

#3

My sister was open about it and she got creepy Neo Nazis looking for Russian girlfriends.

r3df0x ,

There will be a right wing meltdown when someone like Chloe Cole is rejected.

r3df0x ,

If they push hard enough eventually there will be a replacement.

Federation could solve this. All you need is one flagship instance that doesn't allow uploads, but it allows users to create accounts and playlists to act as "the" site for the federated network and then content creators can start their own instances.

r3df0x , (edited )

Edit: It felt too much like I was saying for poor people to just deal with it so I might rephrase it.

r3df0x ,

Reddit also has vote fuzzing where you can get the number of votes, but it's always manipulated for some reason.

I don't understand the point, and tbh it's a serious case of social media mind fuckery. It's a real problem for anyone who creates an incredibly specific subreddit for use by a group and then everyone is left wondering who keeps downvoting them. That can have real life consequences for anyone who doesn't understand what is happening.

r3df0x ,

Can you elaborate on the last part?

TBH I can understand that it's a problem for people who aren't expecting it. If they disregard instructions not to index things then that's also a problem. The only real way to prevent scrapers from replicating content is to place it behind a registration wall.

r3df0x ,

That's one of the problems with archiving everything. I lean in favor of the IA, but there are still issues.

r3df0x ,

I was wondering about this. If they didn't keep track of who is voting, manipulation would be easier then it already is. The problem is that rogue instance admins could make votes public.

r3df0x ,

It is God who ridicules them, and leaves them bewildered in their transgression.

r3df0x ,

There's also a huge about of FUD on EVs being able to be remotely controlled or disabled. The same can be done with gas vehicles that have computers in them and EVs can be made dumb with only the electronics needed for them to function.

r3df0x ,

I agree, but the real problem with ebikes over light motorcycles is the range. Trying to get an ebike with decent speed and range costs a fortune and the range and speed is still incredibly limited for long trips.

You also can't ride them on the road where I live, a point that I've been trying to get through to one of my roommates.

Paedophiles create nude AI images of children to extort from them, says charity | Internet safety | The Guardian (www.theguardian.com)

Internet Watch Foundation has found a manual on dark web encouraging criminals to use software tools that remove clothing. The manipulated image could then be used against the child to blackmail them into sending more graphic content, the IWF said.

r3df0x ,

This is an example of why every responsible parent should forbid their children from uploading any pictures of themselves online, or better yet, bar them from social media entirely. This might be a hot take here, but parents should install monitoring software on all of their children's devices and be open about it. Not doing so is negligent.

Your kids could end up on the pedo registry if they take a picture of themselves and someone changes it into porn.

We could deal with this easily by banning the distribution of porn entirely.

r3df0x ,

There's a huge difference between teaching sex acts and helping kids avoid predators.

The lack of action against pedophiles is just going to fuel Qanon conspiracy theories and lead to vigilantism.

r3df0x ,

Use of child porn is never victimless. Not even if it's fully AI generated.

r3df0x ,

Falls from buildings is more effective.

r3df0x ,

I don't even understand how that even connects.

r3df0x ,

There's no reason why children should be using social media. I support legislation that will bar them from it. They need to go touch grass.

r3df0x ,

It enables pedophilia.

r3df0x ,

That doesn't mean we need to divert attention away from pedophilia.

r3df0x ,

No one is going to prison for creating accounts of websites.

r3df0x ,

All of the children who end up getting abused because the pedophile escalated their fantasies.

A society that tolerates pedophilia on any level is morally guilty.

r3df0x ,

The average coomer would rage out in their basement and nothing would happen.

If people are that addicted to porn, it's proof that it needs to be taken away.

r3df0x ,

This is what Louis Rossman said. Youtube is completely in their right to kick people off for blocking ads. At the same time, it's also not a pissing match that's worth getting heavily invested in, because ultimately Youtube is going to lose unless they can start coercing people into installing proprietary apps which they already have for mobile devices.

r3df0x ,

If this is how Youtube advertised, I wouldn't block the ads. I refuse to sit through ads when I'm searching through videos and I don't even know if the video is the one I want to watch. It's going to take a three minute search into a 10 minute search.

Fewer people are using Elon Musk’s X as the platform struggles to attract and keep users, according to analysts (www.nbcnews.com)

Data from two research firms and figures published by Musk and X suggest a deteriorating situation for X by some metrics. Musk has marketed it as the world’s “town square,” but in number of users it continues to lag far behind social media rivals that focus on video, such as Instagram and TikTok. ...

r3df0x ,

Downvoting and disliking can have their own issues too.

On Lemmy, downvoting isn't really that bad, especially compared to Reddit, and that's likely because of the federated model where instance admins can't trust the authenticity of votes. On Lemmy, voting effects the score on the post and that's it, as opposed to Reddit where taking on too many downvotes will shadow ban or lock your account, even if you still have thousands of karma in the subreddit where it happened. Those restrictions also apply site wide. Lemmy users also don't have a global karma count, which removes most temptation to delete posts that go negative and self censor. Of course there are probably many people out there who would delete a post with a 10:1 negative score ratio. Then again if it's that bad then it might not be a bad thing to delete it.

Both models have their place and pros and cons. I understand the nefarious intent behind this change on Youtube, but I feel like hiding negative feedback so that only the poster can see it has potential. It could deter bandwagon downvote brigading. Dislikes are really only relevant to the algorithm and the user who posted the content.

r3df0x ,

Underrated observation.

r3df0x ,

Right wing "free speech" spaces tend to crash and burn hard. If they don't moderate blatant racism and shitty behavior, the white supremacists drive out all the sane people, but if they do moderate, then shit stains like Tim Pool will start casting massive amounts of FUD onto the platform and claim that it has "gone woke" and isn't a true free speech platform.

r3df0x ,

Someone would have made one eventually. Unless the government monitors every computer in existence, AI is inevitable.

r3df0x ,

Are they talking about inbreeding when most of the online content is AI generated and AI starts training on other AI data?

r3df0x ,

That's why AI is inevitable without a massive surveillance state.

It's Not Safe to Click Links on X (lifehacker.com)

As noted by security researcher Will Dormann, some posts on X purport to lead to a legitimate website, but actually redirect somewhere else. In Dormann's example, an advertisement posted by a verified X user claims to lead to forbes.com. When Dormann clicks the link, however, it takes him to a different link to open a Telegram...

Facebook way back in the day was the shit. Everything was super private outside of groups which served as the public square. I haven't found any federated platforms that come close. It might be seven or eight years now since I logged in.

r3df0x ,

You can manually set things to be private, but I don't know if there's any way to set everything as private by default.

It has the problem with all Facebook alternatives where they feel like Twitter without post limits.

r3df0x ,

I agree. It's important to remember the only "conspiracy" is making money and keeping people on the platform. That said, it will cause people to go down rabbit holes. The solution isn't as simple as "show people content they disagree with" because they either ignore it or it creates another rabbit hole. For example, it would mean that progressives start getting bombarded with Tim Pool videos. I don't believe Tim is intentionally "alt right" but that's exactly why his videos are the most dangerous. They consist of nothing but conservative rage bait with a veneer of progressiveness that allows his viewers to believe they aren't being manipulated.

r3df0x ,

One thing to consider is that conservatives are likely paying for progressives to see their content, and geeks tend to have liberal views and follow the harm principle without many conditions.

Otherwise, it really shows the demographics of the people who play Warhammer. Before my sister transitioned, she played Warhammer and was a socialist but had a lot of really wehraboo interests. She has been talking about getting back into it, but she passes really well and imagines how it would go with the neckbeards.

UK Trial: Pornhub's Chatbot Halts Millions from Accessing Child Abuse Content (www.wired.com)

A trial program conducted by Pornhub in collaboration with UK-based child protection organizations aimed to deter users from searching for child abuse material (CSAM) on its website. Whenever CSAM-related terms were searched, a warning message and a chatbot appeared, directing users to support services. The trial reported a...

r3df0x ,

It's still weird to sexualize children. It's less weird when it's teenagers and everyone is of age but it's a weird thing to engage in constantly.

r3df0x ,

Pornhub also knowingly hosted child porn. Ready or Not put them on blast for it when you raid a company called "Mindjot" for distributing child porn.

r3df0x ,

Pornhub left up underage child rape videos until they were very publicly called out for it.

Porn is also a method of bourgeois oppression. The corporate elites want you to be an easily controlled consoomer.
