There are free OS alternatives out there (which I suspect you already use but just want to poop on other's parade).

I assume that if someone's already using Windows, a paid OS, they are willing to pay $2 to make it usable.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

I've used them all (probably 20+ different OS' in my lifetime), and they all have a place. I use Windows, MacOS, and Linux daily, each for what they are good at. Maybe people should use what works best for them?

It has had such a massive positive effect on my life relative to the price.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

No, it's a euphemism for "screw the people who are left, we need a quick reduction in our cost structure so that we can take bigger bonuses"

There are amazing VR games like HL:Alex and Resident Evil. Not as many as we'd all like but then are out there, and I do believe as porting becomes easier, we will see more AAA titles like this. And honestly playing these games in VR puts their flatscreen versions to shame, so I do think this will become more popular going forward.

For AR we are just at the beginning. I think AVP has proved the concept that you could use such a device for productivity, but I think mass adoption will take many more iterations. But I am sure that bothe AR and VR have long futures ahead of them.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. If "Sadly It's Bradley"'s YouTube channel is anything to go by, furries (and maybe enterprises) will be the primary purchasers of the AVP. He's absolutely over the moon about it.

I can't imagine there's any reason they couldn't make an opaque version of the same. Would probably look pretty cool in black. Or better yet, make them electrochromic so you can have more light in the winter and less in the summer.

Yeah but then I'd have to stop throwing stones, and that's one of my favorite pastimes.

Uncovering these rings, publicizing them, and shutting them down needs to be a top priority. I think a lot, if not most, of the bad decisions made by voters stem from these kind of bad actors. We've let it go on for long enough.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

Yes this should have been done better. I remember when they did the same thing in the USA they at least listed all of them so you could to see what they were up to.

Until governments get serious about trust busting, it will keep happening. Companies that don't have to compete enshittify.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

If the market was competitive, people would just choose another product or service that didn't use such practices as you can clearly be profitable without doing this.

Good heads up. Just turned off software updates so my Voyager don't break.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

Would it work if the underlying OS doesn't support web apps?

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

But as far as I can tell, that is exactly what the article implies. And AFAIK, Voyager is the only web app I use currently.

It's nice to get some good news on occasion.

@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

It does tend to sort by recent, but to me that's its strength. It makes no effort to curate the feed, it gives me all the articles from the sources I choose in order and that's it. So while I still use Lemmy for the "popular", RSS tends to deliver me deep niche content that may not be popular but is very interesting to me.

And also so much content is overlooked by sites like Reddit and Lemmy, that often it is stuff that's popular if I post it, but no one's gotten to it yet. It tends to be more up to date because you don't have to wait for things to get voted to the front page

realitista ,

Yes RSS came back strong in my life after Reddit and Twitter shit the bed.

What is your experience with loxone? What is it worth to integrate with it?

We are moving to a new house, and I want to build a foundation in something more reliable as homeassistant and zigbee. I looked at KNX and it is ridiculously expensive (170 euros for a pir sensor is a joke). So as an alternative I'm looking at loxone, which seems to be a cheaper alternative to KNX. Do you have experience with...

Google demos new Lumiere text to video engine. Results are a huge leap forward from previous engines. (youtu.be)

Google’s new video generation AI model Lumiere uses a new diffusion model called Space-Time-U-Net, or STUNet, that figures out where things are in a video (space) and how they simultaneously move and change (time). Ars Technica reports this method lets Lumiere create the video in one process instead of putting smaller still...

I think that's it's more just information in general that's on the rise. As you mention, those of us who grew up before the internet remember believing a lot of bullshit about a lot of things because there was no easy way to verify it. Now there is, but there is so much information out there that you can't fact check it all and some shit ends up getting through and people who lack this ability fall down bullshit rabbit holes. But I do think that people that are able to fact check are getting better and better informed at a good pace.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

For me the only use case for this has been when I'm really tired and want to watch while lying flat on my back. Unfortunately most of the apps don't even support this. But Netflix actually did.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

I wonder if this move will change that, at least in the EU?

Is Framework actually "good" for the industry?

Framework as in the laptop company, just for clarity. https://frame.work/. For those unaware, the idea is that these are laptops built with a high degree of modularity so that you can replace far more than a single stick of SODIMM with the goal of even upgrading your CPU and mainboard a few years down the line....

It won't make sense in the first purchase. It will start to make sense when you want to upgrade and don't have to throw the whole thing out or when something breaks and you can easily and cheaply fix it.

Fellow Mini owner. This is only one of the many questionable UI decisions made in my car. I literally had to get help to get it started the first time.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

I've got a 2018 mini cooper SE hybrid. It has a little switch to turn on. The switch has its light on when the car is turned off and it's light off when the car is turned on. It also has a third state after you get out of the car where it's not really on or off but you can't charge it or drive it until you turn it completely on or off. And you can't turn it on if you don't have it in neutral. And it doesn't really tell you if the parking break is on except a little light on the center console which you never see, so the car may be on but you won't be able to drive it because the parking brake is on. Sometimes it wont let you unplug it until you lock it and unlock it again for some reason.

And don't even get me started on the CarPlay or the driver profiles or the park assist menu that overstays its welcome by about 3 minutes.

realitista ,
@realitista@lemmy.world avatar

Fuck no. I handled it like a man and trial and errored it for weeks. I am ashamed to say that I had to ask the dealer for assistance to drive it off the lot because I was blocking people and they were getting pissed.
