Any web site that lets you share files with people like xender ?

I remember there being apps like xender, easy share etc. which lets you share files by one person activating hotspot and the other wifi you just have to have both party close to each other and they use no data . But they are all closed source and probably spyware and its too much of a hassle to get others to download a file...

refalo ,

Why not just use the built-in bluetooth file sharing?

refalo ,

BT4.0 can send files at 200mbps, is that not fast enough?

refalo ,

Nice try FBI.

But seriously... if everyone knew about better options, I think they would already be blocked too :)

refalo ,

Some only use a VPN for geoblocks, like to watch the Netflix content of another country... and in that case I think it makes more sense.

refalo ,

Isn't this just a cat-and-mouse or whack-a-mole situation? If the people who create these block lists can also see the new IPs just by having that service, they can also add them to block lists.

refalo ,

Why can't we have bulk downloads of the main A records for most domains similar to IP block owners? Even if they have to be updated often... I think it could increase privacy.

refalo ,

Most people

Then how did google make money?

refalo ,

I just saw a post the other day from a guy who dumped fedora because it couldn't be installed with a Bluetooth mouse.

Allegedly the installer requires a mouse click, and he had no other pointing device. They also said the keyboard navigation was not helpful and was also unable to switch to a console to manually pair his mouse.

refalo ,

TIL you can view and reply to lemmy posts from mastodon

refalo ,

How old is your account? I think the phone number requirement for new signups is relatively recent.

refalo ,

what's wrong with doing business with Israel? I believe most countries do so... and they have some of the smartest engineers in the world.

refalo ,

Why is the person's gender relevant?

refalo ,

There is a central page to manage history across most all of google services.

refalo ,

and why is it there? I still don't get the relevance

refalo ,

It's the same as if it was a man who did it.

then why is it being called out as if there was a difference? that's what I don't understand.

refalo ,

does it? has that ever worked for any country?

refalo ,

I'm wonderful! Thanks for asking.

refalo ,

sounds like the movie Swordfish.

"how many innocent victims splattered across the wall does it take"

refalo ,

Privacy measures currently being rolled out, such as end-to-end encryption, will stop tech companies from seeing any offending

Front doors also stop them from seeing things... is that next? What about clothes to conceal drugs?

refalo ,

The proposal is very clear about this exclusion. Since domain name registrars and registries don’t host any content, they fall outside its scope.

Actually it is already possible to do this, there are even tools made specifically for doing so.

Plus if the registrar also provides DNS services, that can be used to "host" content (or links to it) as well.

refalo ,

fucking terrifying movie. I will never watch it again

refalo ,

Tell me you've never been to Malaysia without telling me you've never been to Malaysia.

refalo ,

Yea I don't think so.

Also Android is technically Linux already.

refalo ,

What’s the more intelligent tech community alternative besides hacker news?

https://lobste.rs/

But it's invite-only.

refalo ,

That was probably me. You can check it here among other scary fingerprint stuff https://abrahamjuliot.github.io/creepjs/

refalo ,

Haven't used amiunique but the EFF one I have seen people criticize because it only checks your uniqueness among people who opted in to take the test, so the results can be highly skewed.

refalo ,

I wasn't trying to debate how the uniqueness is calculated, you're absolutely right on that, and other sites like creepjs do the same, but I think where the eff site is a tad misleading is in how it presents their "just how unique AM I" part of the results, because they only have their own collected data to compare that against.

Sadly I think even disabling JS entirely would take away so much "blending in" that it still wouldn't be hard to uniquely fingerprint a user without it. Even CSS (without JS) and standard HTML tags like "picture" can be used to fingerprint now.

refalo ,

Do note though that this does not prevent them from using Javascript to detect your OS. Even Tor Browser does not hide it for some bizarre reason... which IMO makes Linux users blend in a WHOLE lot less.

refalo ,

link?

Under the FISA expansion, what exactly should I worry about, how do I manage privacy?

Hello everyone, with the unfortunate passing of the FISA expansion, I was left with a few questions. I tried to research it, and to me, it seems like they are beefing up surveillance with routers and ISPs (correct me if I'm wrong.) Aside from having businesses stalk you when you use their WiFi (connected with ISPs.)...

refalo ,

DDoS/spam/malware/hacking from tor and/or known VPN providers is not an imaginary threat. Many companies and websites block it entirely. This is not new, imaginary or lazy.

refalo ,

It's not a few, it's many gigabits per second.

refalo ,

Tor DDoS attacks have been ongoing for years now.

refalo ,

Evidence is not a thing until you are at least accused of a crime or detained.

refalo ,

I think this solution is way too impractical for most people, who tend to unlock their phone many times a day.

refalo ,

Nope :(

refalo ,

The bigger problem IMO is that the Constitution does not universally apply at or within 100 miles of a border, which is where apparently 72% of the population lives.

refalo ,

They would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you only flushed it after hearing them knock on the door.

refalo ,

You can always run a self-hosted version of Signal or a fork of it, then you can do whatever you want with it, including not using phone numbers.

refalo ,

You still have to register initially with a phone number to be able to setup a username.

refalo ,

most people don't run servers from their house, but something like a cheap VPS or similar.

refalo ,

Is that really such a bad thing though?

refalo ,

Personally I find the syntax unreadable.

refalo ,

I really don't disagree with you, but it's so frustrating and tiring to try to work around all this stuff and use alternative tools that nobody else does, all while you're viewed as a paranoid tinfoil hat wearer. Yes I know I shouldn't care what other people think, but I also don't want to be alone forever.
