privlets don't stand a chance

what about computers and the internet? those were created and used for bad too. also gps and weather satellites.

fun fact: the first digital computer was invented for the explicit purpose of calculating artillery firing tables for the army during the war. what it actually ended up getting used for on its first program, was studying global thermonuclear war.

refalo ,

There’s very few products which everyone can objectively say are designed for killing.

What do you think the first digital computer was invented for? Hint: it wasn't world peace

refalo , (edited )

It's not enforceable in any way, it's just virtue signaling. Lemmy itself is a privacy dumpsterfire. GDPR compliance is literally impossible.

refalo ,

Ever seen someone doing their "unskilled job" all their life?

Why yes, yes I have.

refalo ,

Love this response, I'm saving it for later.

refalo ,

The problem here is that lesser known services and/or software they use could have just as many if not more problems, yet be completely unknown to everyone because it's simply not as popular, so people aren't looking at it to find issues.

refalo ,

welcome to IRC, SO and many other places. you're always asking the wrong question and everything is an XY problem.

refalo ,

You're not wrong, I absolutely agree. At least in the places I've been I do feel like things are more often wrongly considered an XY when they're not though. And a lot of times people will just dismiss questions because "you shouldn't WANT to do that" for dubious reasons they might have against it.

refalo ,

And the largest homeserver, matrix.org, is MITM'd by Crimeflare.

refalo ,

Who have they convinced that it is private? I think it has more to do with the overall purpose of the platform. Signal is not made for large group chatting with strangers like Matrix.

refalo ,

Please give several reasons why

refalo ,

Signal clients are clunky

Obviously you have never used Element for matrix. Signal is like a Ferrari in comparison.

refalo ,

sketchy companies

I would argue that the standard federation fragmentation issues still apply. Many instances end up defederating from each other and you have no idea which wind you're pissing into.

refalo ,

And one can always self-host or use a different server.

refalo ,

Also Tox, Briar, Session etc.

refalo ,

It has had some suspicious funding sources

Wait until you find out where computers, the Internet, GPS, weather satellites and Tor came from.

refalo ,

it's a futurama joke

refalo ,

Please stop spreading FUD.

  1. The encryption used by Signal would not be used if it could be easily broken. It's fully open source and is regularly audited. People would not recommend it if it were so broken like you say; this is just fearmongering.

  2. lol, lmao even

refalo ,

Any homeserver that federates (even indirectly) with matrix.org will still have practically all the same data shared with it, just not your password.

refalo ,

The password used to login to the homeserver

refalo ,

random searx instance rotator would probably be more private than just giving ddg all your searches

refalo ,

I would not consider whatsapp any better, maybe even worse than normal calls/sms, because it has been shown that it is compromised.

https://securityaffairs.com/125176/security/encrypted-messaging-apps-data-access.html

refalo ,

you assume the application itself isn't compromised.

refalo ,

this was always possible, not sure why people are just now freaking out about it.

I remember someone doing the same thing with NES back in 2013: https://andrewkelley.me/post/jamulator.html

refalo ,

can be done as a school project

needs a few million dollars

which is it?

refalo ,

I wonder how much talent is wasted because of jaded programmers that think it's dumb (to them) to make something simple even if it would become very popular and maybe profitable

refalo ,

unironically all you really need is one or two neurospicy individuals that are passionate about your project and just about anything can be done in a matter of weeks.

refalo ,

besides p2p/onion type stuff hiding your IP on top of whatever you use, I think imageboards are the most private/anonymous.

here's a list: https://chan.city/

refalo ,

true but any instance could be figured to ignore delete requests, and/or the original content could still exist in backups

refalo ,

firefox for me is using 12GB right now

refalo ,

horrible take IMO. firefox is using 12GB for me right now, but you have no idea how many or what kind of tabs either of us have, which makes all the difference to the point your comment has no value whatsoever.

refalo ,

Anyone may run their own experiment.

I have and Chrome uses less memory for me.

refalo ,

and if you had the same tabs open that I have, it would use a very similar amount of ram

refalo ,

would certainly love to see your side by side comparison of a large difference in memory usage between the two using the same tabs and no extensions with up to date versions.

refalo ,

Are you asking for free labor to be used for personal gain? What is this... open source software? /s

refalo ,

Rule 3

refalo ,

My library doesn't even have a single technology-related book, let alone a language section :(

refalo ,

Can you name one tech non-profit that does all of those things
