A fuckin' genius he is. I can't believe anyone didn't think of actually paying workers before!

remotelove ,

would just get frustrated and throw things.

Yeah. Most conservatives I know have short tempers and they get extremely carried away when they are in groups. I mean, it doesn't matter what they are getting mad at, just as long as everyone is getting pissed off at the same time and about someone else or some other ideology. The key point is they believe they are victims of "the system" or "libruls" and not their own bad choices.

It's very similar to how Putin is constantly crying about how Russia is a victim of NATO aggression, actually.

Just tell a person that their way of life is being attacked and that you have all the solutions.(Simplified Hermann Goering quote. Allegedly.)

remotelove Mod ,

That sounds illegal or extremely fun. I can't quite tell which.

remotelove ,

Ok. Hear me out. I got this wicked idea for a song about a spider but it might be too far off-genre.

There was this tiny little spider. An itsy-bitsy little thing, actually. He lived at the bottom of this water-drain thing, and he always wanted to crawl to the top of it to get a better view of the world, ya' know?

Every time the poor bastard got enough courage to start his journey, rain clouds would show up and torrents of rain kept washing him back down the drain.

Still, he would never give up trying and rumor has it that he is still trying to get to the top of the spout once more.

Now, I don't know about y'all, but this little guy almost deserves a song written about him. It's like, I dunno, motivation for how we should approach life, and stuff. Let me know what you think cause I think we have a hit on our hands.

remotelove Mod ,

No, it's not something I need. It's absolutely something I want now.

remotelove ,

That is single most annoying and useful feature ever implemented into a track pad.

remotelove ,

Water was a scarce resource and probably doesn't count as renewable. There wasn't much need for solar power since it seems they had better energy sources. Spice was mined and used without consideration for its replenishment.

Herbert was vague about some of the technology used, that I know of. Water collection was kinda the biggest thing.

While the Fremen respected the desert and lived in it, I don't think it really has a comparison to a solarpunk society. Fremen only learned efficient ways to survive, IMHO. By that, I mean they learned ways not to get eaten or get extremely dehydrated. It's a bit more of "living on the edge" with scarce resources.

remotelove ,

I only remember the first two books, so that would explain where my knowledge faulters.

Could spice be the renewable resource that I am not giving enough credit? I know a little more, but I risk spoiling things since there is probably a new wave of Dune fans after the last movie.

remotelove ,

Ok, it was all about the fish. The last bit I completely forgot. (The spoiler tag worked.)

remotelove ,

I still have the first book basically memorized from my youth, kinda.

Not a spoiler, but if you saw the second movie, I am curious: Were the worm scales backwards in the movie? I am fairly sure that there was a better mechanism that the Fremen used to lift them up, starting with a specialized pole to pry up the first scale to stabilize the worm before "steering control" hooks were set. (That has been bugging me since I was at the theater.)

remotelove ,

Odd, key details were left out or just not explained, for sure. There was a ton of lore you would just need to know before watching the movie to understand all of what you were watching.

Weirding modules are at the top of that list. Either didn't go into depth in the movie and I completely missed them, or they were just cut completely. Of all Dune lore, those were always super odd to me and didn't even fit in the original movie from years ago.

remotelove ,

Ok. I got the old movie and the original video game mixed up with proper lore. (I am just old. It's been more than a few years since I read the books and watched the original movie quite a few time. Sigh.)

remotelove ,

Never give anyone else control of systems that are directly responsible for your physical safety. Door locks are just a mild deterrent and breaking through a door at least leaves more evidence for the police never to follow up on.

And for fucks sake, stop putting "cloud" connected cameras in your fucking houses! (You are more likely to incriminate yourself in a crime anyway.)

remotelove ,

That depends on your skin type and the cause of the blemish. Test it on your arm first before slathering it straight on to your face.

Once I started keeping pure isopropyl alcohol (99.9%) around the house to use in several hobbies, I quickly gained some deep respect for it's magical properties and it's ability to dry anything it touches. Diluted or not, I don't look at the stuff the same way anymore.

(Also of note, rubbing alcohol is isopropyl and aftershave is typically ethanol.)

This bubble is quite bubbly. There is an AI company for anything and everything now. The market is almost fully saturated with "AI" everything.

Just like the web bubble, all of the intsta-AI shops need to fail so the real tech can grow. AI is never going to go away, but most of the scam companies will fail in due time.

We might have one big consolidation, or several. The hype will die and the quick money will disappear. It's the same story, every time. One the magic AI box stops shitting out dollar bills, we should be good.

remotelove ,

Since we are sharing...

Holding down 1-5-9 or 3-5-7 can drop a POS card reader into debug mode, but it's brand dependent. (I have had it also crash the host terminals in some cases as well.)

remotelove , (edited )

It serves a niché function in some situations. (Physical pen testing, in my case. I needed the person at the register gone in one case so I could setup a small network tap.)

remotelove ,

It's not destructive, nor can it really be considered illegal access. I suppose there is something illegal about it if it's classified as a DoS, I guess. There isn't much on a payment PED aside from an encryption key and maybe some network information.

Entering your PIN and accidentally hitting 3 buttons hardly seems like something to get charged with. How you leverage that for other things could easily be a problem.

All I am saying is that the likelihood of serious repercussion is very low. Still, I have to agree: Only do it with permission and with purpose.

Jerking off while crying is a perfect match.

Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores (gizmodo.com)

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

remotelove ,

Not much. Employees don't give a fuck and if they did, they would probably get fired for trying to stop a thief.

Actually, many places where I live are scaling back self-checkout. I suspect it's because the geniuses who tried to save a buck by getting rid of tellers didn't realize they would lose more from theft. (It's amazing how many people don't give two fucks about shareholder profits, actually.)

If I can stop random floods of dick pics by drunks, I'm down. Also, let's make this a public application, shall we?

My social media handle is common between Lemmy and Reddit, so no hiding there. I was a mod of /r/Chameleons for a while, as well as some other subs. Needless to say, reptile owners are a unique breed and have even delt with just about every type of human.(My account on Reddit is stale and I quit /r/Chameleons during the third-party app exodus. My main function was to shut down user-user conflict and coordinate with other mods during brigading events, which were more common on reptile subs than you would think.)

I am very active on Lemmy and I'll use an alt for any modding stuffs, specific to the community and instance. (I am mostly instance agnostic, but for my daily driving I use lemmy.ca and haven't had a need to use any other one yet. lemmy.world was annoying, so I moved my "main" account after a short trial.)

Also, I like long walks on sandy beaches just before sunset. That puts my formal modding hours between 11PM and 6AM UTC but I do check Lemmy throughout the day.

Unless its an active troll pushing state funded propaganda, I can roll with just about anything within the laws of the land. Modding 196 could be fun, but I'll just resign the position myself if it doesn't work. No hard feelings.

[OMG UR HIRED / wut?] -- Circle one choice.

remotelove Mod ,

Yes. My eyeballs rolled back so much modding that sub I think I broke something permanently.

I had to deal with this psychopath several times..[NSFL, if you are animal abuse sensitive]: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7665431/Vegan-activist-admits-gave-pet-chameleon-exfoliating-coconut-BODY-WASH.html

The bitch finally got her ass arrested in Moscow for similar shit, actually. Something about giving her pet calf a walk ...

HE SAID: OK, TEAM UP AGIANST LEMMYSHITPOSTS?

(i do not condone or endorse said suggestion. only healthy and productive behavior is encouraged on this community. do not participate in lemmy brigading if you are between the ages of 0 and 165. brigading may cause herpes, aids, anal leakage and hair loss. moderators of 196 are not designed to diagnose or treat or provide care for anything. please talk to your medical care provider if you have additional questions.)

Generative AI Is Coming To Your Home Appliances (www.forbes.com)

Across all industries, organizations are rapidly embracing generative AI. Among them, makers of home appliances like fridges and ovens. Generative AI in your oven? Why not? Ater all, AI has been creeping into our homes for years (think smart lightbulbs and Alexa) – but thanks to generative AI, these interactions will become...

PronHub on my refrigerator has been a lifesaver though. That is the pinnacle achievement of a lifetime.

The regex filtering for that probably nukes 75% of their phones battery life as well. It would be more efficient to mine Bitcoin.

remotelove OP Mod ,

It depends on your Lemmy client. I only use Connect, so I can't tell you where it is in other apps, or if other apps even have it. (Settings -> Filters)

Connect is a simple app and has stabilized quite well over the last few months. Instance, community and word filters have been in the app since I started using it. (Instance filters were implemented long before Lemmy had that as a core feature.)

TBH, Connect was about as close to RIF as I could find at the time and it's been great. (It's had its share of bugs, but most are squashed now.)

remotelove OP Mod ,

This is exactly what I have wanted as well. Not only could it consolidate content, it may help drive traffic to smaller instances.

remotelove OP Mod ,

Isn't it great? The m_sk spam was getting out of control here and I think everyone is sick of hearing about that other guy.

I gave it an honest shot to pay attention, in part, to that related news, but it's all the same shit. All humans will eventually get tired of a TV always being stuck on the same channel and eventually, it gets turned off.

However, there is method to the madness. If a person discards everything as trash, ie: Fake news, MSM, etc.., then they are more prone to believing lies directly from the source.

remotelove OP Mod ,

That exact post is what triggered this post, actually.

Party Cannon rocks! I took my daughter to a show here recently. It's a fun show with lots of inflatable pool toys... And pushups. (Honestly, you don't need to be a metal head to enjoy the show and it's very unique.)

We got to see them in a tiny venue too so it was super personal. The lead singer personally sold my kid a tee shirt. ;)

NeuraLink will allow you to speak entire words or sentences telepathically; when a person has no voice... (kbin.social)

NeuraLink will allow you to speak entire words or sentences telepathically; when a person has no voice, the AI will generate brain-to-speak your voice, according to your choice, and play it on a regular loudspeaker for people around you....

And you think solar flares are a problem now? Just wait until you get an antenna drilled into your skull...

If you can control the porn, you control the internet.

So, if you can somehow trigger a revolt in all the NSFW subreddits, you win. Reddit stock will tank before it goes public.

Monitors aren't too difficult to disassemble. Most of them use screws and molded plastic clips. Plastic clips can be the most difficult part for people to manage as they can be extremely easy to break off.

It just takes practice to open up plastic cases. Having a few guitar picks or a good spudger is a huge plus.

If you happen to have a $400+ monitor you need to repair, it's probably worth your time to get a broken $10 one to practice on first.

Google says its AI image-generator would sometimes 'overcompensate' for diversity (apnews.com)

Google says its AI image-generator would sometimes 'overcompensate' for diversity::Google apologized Friday for its faulty rollout of a new artificial intelligence image-generator, acknowledging that in some cases the tool would “overcompensate” in seeking a diverse range of people even when such a range didn’t make sense.

Netflix was the king of over doing it on just about all fronts. For a while, they went absolutely crazy with the non-english subs. No, my account wasn't leaked or anything but I do think Netflix really wanted me to learn several other languages.

Currently, "my recommendations" are the complete opposite of the kind of shows I watch and just about every movie is #1 in the US if you look at enough Netflix accounts.

(The king of shit recommendations is YouTube. Did you have to make it through an intro to find out that it's the wrong subject? Here! Let's completely fill your feed with those kinds of videos now!)

Samus is female though...

Obviously. I am failing to see the joke, unfortunately.

Cool, thanks for the explainer. (I didn't recognize that as Link. I kinda did and looked up a reference photo, but it didn't click )

remotelove ,

It's easier to replace the malware with your own, honestly. (Bots do this all the time, actually.)

"Removed" is such a strong word and likely not used correctly here.

Edit: This isn't a "conspiracy". It's a math game, TBH. And it's exceedingly cheap.

remotelove ,

Lulz. I was updating my post when you responded.

People don't understand that stainless steel just "stains" slower than pure iron or regular steel.
