Yeah, just like most material that was ever printed or carved into a clay tablet. It's the way of things.

schmorpel ,
@schmorpel@slrpnk.net avatar

It's a technological and a physical issue. We just can't store every bit of information plus a picture of everyone's cat. We can't guarantee that no information ever gets lost. We've also not really stored and archived every shopping list, advertising, pamphlet, silly poem, ugly drawing etc. since the time of the printing press and that's okay.

It might be a good idea to store and archive some written material as time passes but we want to be a bit picky about what we store. That said, I wouldn't mind to find more shopping lists and less posh documents in museums.

Thanks for reminding me kindly, guess you are correct. I would want to create a small(ish) sticker that might go unnoticed for a while, but I'll definitely get back to the drawing board with this. Old habits die hard sometimes.

I would be happy for other suggestions that fit 'suv' so I can redesign this

schmorpel OP ,
@schmorpel@slrpnk.net avatar

Yup, this. And because old habits tend to die hard. To redesign this without body shaming I am looking for other, non-genital related associations that make suv drivers just as fucking mad

It's supposed to be for print out, cut out, stick on cars.

It's great to be able to run a server with functioning stuff on it when one doesn't know anything about servers. Anything else around self-hosting would have been too much of an intimidating learning curve for me, but in the meantime I've picked up a lot of knowledge and terminology just by running the YH. It's like training wheels, it's great if you know a bit of tech stuff, but not enough.

I think it will last me a while before I outgrow it, don't have enough time to really sit down and study server administration to the point where I feel safe to not fuck it up. I'll let you know 😅

schmorpel ,
@schmorpel@slrpnk.net avatar

Is this a self-hostable platform? I just see a signup option.

Just before your post about Karrot I finally (re-)installed Agora on Yunohost as a collaboration suite. First few users onboarded and praying it works. It's a bit ugly but does the job. Karrot looks to be more map-focused than Agora from a very fleeting look, I don't think I've seen it in the Yunohost catalogue.

Or Just Say Nothing: A Response to CrimethInc.’s Initial Statement on Aaron Bushnell (abolitionmedia.noblogs.org)

While it would be easy to dismiss this as CrimethInc [hereforth the Outlet] cautiously mitigating any potential liability if self-immolation generalizes, the rejection of the framework of martyrdom demands attention. The question is not whether Aaron qualifies as a shahid within the Palestinian context, although demonstrators in...

schmorpel ,
@schmorpel@slrpnk.net avatar

What is happening: the attention is really drawn away from Palestine where it was meant to be directed. Instead people are yet again discussing one person and in that context argue about what Anarchism should or shouldn't be.

If Anarchism is to serve life then we have to get over ourselves, and our importance, and the importance of single persons, and honor the work of the collective and the community of the living.

I don't mean to dishonor the dead by my suggestion to shift focus. I am writing as someone who, a long time ago, really didn't want to be alive in the face of so much dystopia everywhere, but who is still around after all to act and nurture the good things. I am sad that those who decided to part early are no longer with us.

Loads of interesting stuff in there, thanks for sharing! It contains great infos about the organization of something even larger than we have in mind, fascinating project.

Wow, that's mega-kind. I feel honoured that you remembered us! If we had a place and team already I'd love to have a source for electronics as they can be a little hard to come by around here. I find even the most vile crap is still sold for stupid prices. However, we are still much more of a theoretical project: we are a tiny group without dedicated electronics team and have no space to work in yet. If we manage to materialize into something more concrete I will happily get back to you!

Memories of Aaron Bushnell (crimethinc.com)

On February 25, Aaron Bushnell set himself on fire at the gate of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC as an act of protest against the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Hostile critics have attempted to shrug off Aaron’s action as the consequence of mental illness. On the contrary, Aaron’s choice was a political...

No, no and no. Of course he was free to do what he wanted, but come on, can we please finally stop glorifying suicide for whatever reason? We cannot afford to lose more kindhearted people.

Sorry if my input offends anyone, but this makes me angry and sad. Anarchy is not supposed to be a cult of martyrs.

Inter-Species Mutualism here! Nice list, now if every person on the planet gets to choose and realize their personal ism - that'd be anarchy, right?

The Forest Occupation Movement in Germany (crimethinc.com)

Lignite mining, express highways, gravel mining, parking decks, lime pits, and candy factories all have something in common that might not be obvious at first glance. Capitalists need to cut down forests to make way for them. But all around Germany, people are mobilizing to stop them. Over the past decade, forest occupations and...

schmorpel ,
@schmorpel@slrpnk.net avatar

Forest occupation was one of my first touchpoints with anarchism. So many years ago 1995. And even though I got lost abroad and internally for quite a while in the meantime the tree houses were a memory that remained and created a seed. So whatever continues of the occupations is super important, if not for the individual tree out there but for trees and forests to come and old young ones to remember. Thanks fighters for the forest.

TW suicide

spoiler

___Clicking through to the 'why (the dedication)' of the text about love one reaches a text about the suicide of a young woman. I must say that it kept me up all night, probably because someone (on the same site as the above mentioned text) offers poetry courses (for a fee) and claims on the main page that they look for 'tragic' poets. This reeks of something I really don't like. My relationship with poetry is not great, since it sometimes seems to lead more people into suicide than into action, and I believe poetry is very much not something that can or should be taught for money, especially not with the aim of creating 'tragic' poets. Sorry for all those who lost a close one.

Between 100% of people growing their own food and 1% growing for 99% of the others is a wonderful range of opportunity we should return to. One person or corporation owning and managing hundreds of hectares with the help of giant machines doesn't scale either, it's currently destroying the planet. The guys on the big tractors are the grandchildren of the people grandma was forced to sell her garden too. I'm sure the human species is ingenuous enough to come up with something that guarantees people's dignity and feeds everyone.

Community server for a local community

Preference of community hosting instead of self hosting has recently come up in a permacomputing chat, and in this sense I am trying to set up a tiny yunohost server that can serve my local alternative community - a series of mostly rural living people spread throughout the landscape around a small towns. I want to support local...

Idea for disrespecting cars

OK so I came up with a slightly crazy idea. Do you know how cars are emblazoned with logos and emblems? Like the brand name (Toyota), the car name (Kluger), engine and other doodads (V6 etc etc). What if we made like jokey versions of these to replace on our cars? Like make a Toyota logo but it looks a bit more like a penis....

schmorpel ,
@schmorpel@slrpnk.net avatar

Shit I wasn't even going to spoof a car logo, just make a tiny wheat paste sticker with a penis drawing and the words "small utility vehicle" - but your idea is beautiful as well.

I got slightly taken off track when I was too lazy to draw the tiny penis myself and typed "tiny penis" into my search bar.

If anyone would like an A4 sheet of tiny penises to print and glue on SUVs, let me know I'll finish it. Shaming these motherfucking SUV-owners out of existence maybe works.

I am a translator. Some decades ago the language industry introduced MT - some kind of precursor of LLM. The prices of translation jobs didn't change, and translators didn't lose their work entirely. But gradually we were offered more and more MTPE (euphemism for fixing the robot's shit) jobs, for a lower rate. Many older colleagues stayed with the few remaining translation jobs, young people starting out became "MTPE editors". These days there are a few translation jobs, many MTPE jobs, and more and more jobs in "AI output rating" - and the new generation will be working as an "AI linguistic assistant" or other such barbarity for even less money.

The tech isn't necessarily bad in itself, but what we have to wake up to is that tech is used to pay each generation after us a little less. We have to resist this and demand fair pay for fair work always - no matter if they want to call it 'translation', 'AI output review' or 'ertdfg sfdgs' - it has a price, and this price has to respect our dignity and enable a healthy life for us language workers and all other workers.
