Just for people that haven't searched it yet:

During setup of your new Copilot+ PC, and for each new user, you're informed about Recall and given the option to manage your Recall and snapshots preferences. If selected, Recall settings will open where you can stop saving snapshots, add filters, or further customize your experience before continuing to use Windows 11. If you continue with the default selections, saving snapshots will be turned on.

It sounds like YOU need to TURN IT OFF

Jesus Christ. All these requirements for something most people didn't ask for:

System requirements for Recall

Your PC needs the following minimum system requirements for Recall:

A Copilot+ PC

16 GB RAM

8 logical processors

256 GB storage capacity

To enable Recall, you’ll need at least 50 GB of storage space free

Saving screenshots automatically pauses once the device has less than 25 GB of storage space

Dude I think you need to get some meds for all that rage.

Maybe they have some on Amazon, I heard they have fantastic next day shipping as it's such an urgently needed item!

Would you say rampant inefficiencies and cronyism are also present in the private side of things as well though?

I can certainly imagine that the rich owner of a company is more likely to take a service contract with his rich buddy than with the newbie on the block, and nobody will do anything about it because private.

Then in terms of inefficiencies, the only thing a private company seems to be able to do efficiently is take money off you, not deliver their service or even customer service.

At least state services have the opportunity to hold those in charge responsible, if the systems put in place work for the people. In many countries however, this is not the case.

Therefore it seems like turning companies private is just another bad option. The actual, and perhaps impossible, fix is to resolve the issues in our governing bodies such that our leaders are held accountable.

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

I had been considering a Roku stick instead of an Amazon fire stick to try and get out of the Amazon bubble.

I now see that Roku basically want to create their own bubble too so probably better to only let one shitty company (Amazon) get my viewing habits.

Jeez this is terrifying.

It looks like when a kid draws a straight line but loses concentration at the end.

I think we have to try harder to find good content these days. AI, whilst continuing this, did not start it. The masses becoming 'online' started this. More nonsense got posted because everybody thought that every one else should hear their voice, and what they had for breakfast, and how their little toe bends slightly differently to their fourth toe.

It's just become over populated.

The fediverse feels quite nice to me because it isn't so populated yet. People don't seem to be screaming over eachother so much.

I'd wager most people who don't think about cyber security even look at the sender email address these days.

thetreesaysbark ,

I'd argue, oddly, that it's easier to hold a single corporate entity accountable for data breaches than mastodon instance owners.

It's likely the case that both of are bad from a data security point of view, but at least with the corporations you know who to shout at.

** edit just realised that mastodon may not work in the exact same way as Lemmy when it comes to instance owners, I'd have to look that up.

I'm not saying this is the case but I am curious.

I have an image in my head of children of very wealthy families having the means to pursue their own creative potential, and just not.

One could argue that we are predisposed to being 'happy' when we're challenged, and if we have those means provided to us our mental wellbeing will suffer.

Or maybe I've just misunderstood.

thetreesaysbark ,

I hear you, and thanks for the well thought out articulated response!

Personally, I don't have any hobbies that are easy to do day to day. Apart from maybe playing computer games but I really don't consider this good for my wellbeing like other hobbies are.

My less day to day hobbies are sports that I need to take a trip to be able to do, I'm not so sure how an expensive trip would fit in to a world where I don't work to earn the money to go on that trip.

The work fills the time between trips, and also pays for the trips. This makes it hard to untangle those in my head.

thetreesaysbark ,

As for enjoying the work. I enjoy the challenge of it and get a good buzz when I feel I've done something well.

I don't however feel like the things I do contribute positively to my community.

Where I live, I have conflicting feelings about the community stuff. It seems there are very few others who wish to help their community, which in turn makes me less motivated to do so. I've been in the position where some help, or even basic empathy, from those around me would have been greatly appreciated, but it was just not there.

Purpose wise, I get most of this from providing good experiences for my family, but some months just making sure the house is warm and there's food on the table is all I can manage. (I don't want that to sound like I'm asking for pity/charity there. It's just the reality of the current economic trend.)

If the need for work vanished, I like to think I'd pick up other hobbies but I only have my teenage self to compare against in terms of existing without a job - and that guy wasn't exactly making the best decisions for his mental wellbeing and hobbies.
