It's all relative. Maybe pretty chill as compared to reddit. I still get people being weirdly hostile whenever I say anything remotely controversial, no matter how nice I am about it.
I only see meanness in political posts, and some instances like hexbear (the_dunk_tank can get pretty toxic)
I have two lemmy apps, one that I have set up to block locally, and one with none of those blocks in place. You should try keyword filtering and instance blocking. You should add election, trump, biden, elon, musk, vote, war as your blocks (its what I use)
When I feel argumentative or simply don’t want to have posts hidden I go on the app with no instance blocks or keyword filters
When I want good news I use the one with my filters
Yea, lemmy is quite mean. I simply unsubscribed to the world news and politics communities. Now, my feed is just filled with cute posts like urs'. Whenever I want to see the talked about news story of the day, I just head on to "All" under "Active".
OH ALSO! Try to block the tankie communities/servers. They're the worst in this regard.
It is kind of interesting from a historical perspective that the massacre part of Tiananmen Square didn't happen in the Square. Like most police actions from fascist states, it was squads of pigs chasing down protesters after they broke and ran and beating them to death or disappearing them when they're cut off from support.
And, of course, the crowd had to break and run. They weren't armed, and couldn't actually resist riot cops, much less the army.
Saying that he praised a genocide is very dishonest. If I claimed people in the US were forced to go to universities, where they are forcibly sterilized, beaten and indoctrinated, you wouldn't be praising atrocities if you rejected that claim and praised universities for the good they actually do for society.
