In the strictest, dawkins sense, this is a meme. But god damn i'm tired of getting hit with politics every place i look.

“People often say, with pride, ‘I’m not interested in politics.’ They might as well say, ‘I’m not interested in my standard of living, my health, my job, my rights, my freedoms, my future, or any future.’ … If we mean to keep any control over our world and lives, we must be interested in politics.”

I once needed help. I called the police. It was within eyesight of a police station. They took 3 hours

SpaceNoodle ,

You should have called a crackhead.

520 ,

Promise them a baggie and they'd get there a lot sooner

They shouldn't have broke the law

Cops aren't supposed to shoot guilty people either. I don't know why that always seemed to get overlooked.

AnUnusualRelic ,
@AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world avatar

But then all they have left to shoot is dogs and that's boring after a while.

If you need headlights with more lumens than the sun to drive at night, you shouldn't be allowed to drive at night.

The temptation to mirror tint my rear windshield goes up every time I drive at night

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Your rearview mirror likely has a little tab on the bottom of it. Push it when there's The Entire Sun behind you. It'll dim the mirror's reflection without changing the angle.

If you have a newer, fancier car, you might have a digital version of that.

JacobCoffinWrites ,
@JacobCoffinWrites@slrpnk.net avatar

I use that thing a lot, but they usually drive close enough to get the side mirrors too, and generally light up the whole cab. So I spend however long they're behind me hunched forward to keep their brights out of my eyes, waiting for a passing zone. I'm not even a slow driver.

AngryHumanoid , in Side mirrors at head-height in the bike lane

Not to excuse lumenbros but I don't care if you're going 100 over the speed limit, if you're in the left lane, someone wants to pass you and you can move over, move over. Then they can go the speed they want and you can go the speed you want.

Zorque ,

Funny how everyone just seems to assume that people are in the left lane anytime anyone brings up shitbags tailgating.

People tailgate. They tailgate in the left lane. The right lane. The turning lane, the parking lot, fuck they probably tailgate in driveways.

There is no excuse for it. Whether or not you want to go faster than the person in front of you or not. It is dangerous and selfish under all circumstances.

qooqie , in Side mirrors at head-height in the bike lane

I usually just move my mirrors to reflect it back into their eyes, easy with motorized mirrors

xpinchx ,

Heh someone in a Tesla was blinding me from behind and tailgating so I moved both side mirrors and the rear view to aim them straight back. He passed around me over the double yellow line. With him now in front of me and in traffic I just flipped my high beams on and chuckled to myself until he eventually turned off and I put my headlights back to normal :)

son_named_bort , in Coal plant fee: $66.6, green-energy fee: $42.0

Where's the convenience fee? And the inconvenience fee?

BeardedSingleMalt ,

I got a $75 speeding ticket when my town put those cameras in school zones. The actual fine was $70, but it included a $5 charge for them mailing me the ticket...which could only be paid online...and they charged an additional $5 convenience/processing fee.

liztliss , in Side mirrors at head-height in the bike lane

Ope, suddenly I remembered I love driving the speed limit.

Delta_V , in Go ahead.

Bikers really need their own infrastructure that's kept entirely apart from where cars are. Bikes and cars sharing the same road is terrifyingly unsafe for both.

skyfaller ,

"unsafe for both"? What is the bike going to do to the car? Scratch the paint? Get blood on the tires?

That said, I agree that separated bike infrastructure saves lives and encourages biking by making people feel safer.

FMT99 ,

That's a little melodramatic. I'm 100% on the cyclist side (don't even have a driving licence) but even I can see mixed traffic is dangerous for both.

What driver hits a bike unexpectedly (assuming no intent) and doesn't react in a potentially dangerous way? People crash cars trying to avoid deer even.

Transporter_Room_3 ,
@Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website avatar

As someone who biked everywhere, daily, for years, I would have loved so much to have my own dedicated infrastructure, if only our own separate, Barrier-protected lane in the street.

I've been to cities where they have added in lanes separate from the road, going all over town, and they're usually packed with people using them.

People want this kind of thing.

I think microplastics are going to be what wipes out humanity, not climate change.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

You'd be wrong but it's a hopeful thought.

EatYouWell ,

Chemicals in microplastics cause fertility issues. Humanity can survive the climate crisis for a very long time, but only if we can make new humans.

perestroika , in History repeats itself

It's actually a bit more complicated. :) They made vessels from copper when they could - copper is a superb heat conductor. But copper gets toxic fast when you cook acidic food. It gets worse if you don't clean your copper vessels. Wikipedia tells:

Copper is reactive with acidic foods which can result in corrosion, the byproducts of which can foment copper toxicity. In certain circumstances, however, unlined copper is recommended and safe, for instance in the preparation of meringue, where copper ions prompt proteins to denature (unfold) and enable stronger protein bonds across the sulfur contained in egg whites. Unlined copper is also used in the making of preserves, jams and jellies.

Despite not having adequate chemistry or medicine, people in old times had a clue - they saw that copper sometimes fouled and turned green, and suspected this was not good, preferring tin-lined copper vessels as the economical alternative to silver-lined copper vessels.

(Needless to say, industries of that time didn't produce stainless steel - maybe some alchemist blacksmith knew enough to make it, but it was not a thing.)

Lining copper pots and pans prevents copper from contact with acidic foods. The most popular lining types are tin, stainless steel, nickel and silver.

...but the chemistry of the time being what it was - shoddy - sometimes tin was contaminated with lead (Pb), sometimes it was deliberately adulterated with lead, and shit happened.

In the middle ages, guilds had a system of proof marks and inspectors to ensure craftsmen wouldn't add too much lead to tin alloys. The Nuremberg standard for example specified 1 part of lead against 10 parts of tin, but in Luzern, Switzerland, a problematic alloy was used.

As for Romans...

However, the use of leaden cookware, though popular, was not the general standard of use. Copper cookware was used far more generally and no indication exists as to how often sapa was added or in what quantity. (Grape syrup)

Kusimulkku , in the healthy crab blames the sick crab not the fisherman

"Well he is stealing your car but whatever I guess"

stabby_cicada OP ,

I'm going to rant a little here.

No one chooses to be a crackhead.

No one except that one AMA guy on Reddit aspires to be a drug addict when they grow up.

People make bad decisions from poverty and lack of education and social support, people self-medicate because they don't have access to medical care, people get trapped in the "justice system's" cycle of abuse and can't get the help they need to pull out of their spiral...

And then, yes, they end up as homeless crackheads breaking into cars.

And none of that would have happened if we didn't have a brutal capitalist caste system in the United States that relies on ruining people for its perpetuation. The system has to have poor people, has to have unemployed people, has to have homeless people, has to have drug addicts. Because the only reason the average worker tolerates the horrid conditions they work under is because they're so afraid of poverty and homelessness they'd rather tolerate horrid conditions than risk losing their jobs.

The system needs a homeless underclass as an object lesson of the consequences of unemployment, so that when bosses threaten workers with unemployment, that threat has teeth.

The fact that every major city in the wealthiest nation in the world has thousands of homeless drug addicts on the street is not a bug in capitalism. It is deliberate. It is a feature. It is a weapon to terrify the worker and keep him in his place.

So sure, the dude is stealing your car, but what made him have to do that in the first place?

Kusimulkku ,

Junkies are junkies in every country. In Finland where we have extensive social safety nets and drug programs and housing provided for homeless they'll still steal a bunch of shit. Because they always need more money for drugs.

It's sad for them but also they can fuck right off from stealing from me.
