The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

3volver ,

the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights

This comparison is bad. Commercial flights don't use electricity, they use jet fuel, pumping fumes directly into the atmosphere. I don't see a single complaint about HOW electricity is produced. I just read about how there's too much solar power in California. A serious disconnect in the logic blaming AI for pollution when we should be blaming the way we produce electricity.

3volver ,

we should be blaming the way we produce electricity

I'm also referring to emissions, just redirecting focus about HOW electricity is produced. Also, AI is not pointless, that's a bad claim. You have a comprehension issue.

3volver ,

I didn’t miscomprehend, you just disagree with my reasonable assertion that AI isn't pointless and sucks. Hope this helps!

NASA successfully launched Artemis 1 first try.

3volver ,

Where's your evidence proving exactly how much Starship has cost in total? Or wait, maybe you are just making bullshit up because you have no idea how much it has actually cost them because they don't disclose that information like NASA does.

3volver ,

likely

probably

Where is the "exactly" that I asked about?

3volver ,

Male self control breakthrough keeps their dick in their pants and don't have sex for a while. Try it some time, it's fantastic.

3volver ,

You're referring to something that is changing and getting better constantly. In the long term LLMs are going to be even better than they are now. It's ridiculous to think that it won't be able to replace any of the workers that were fired. LLMs are going to allow 1 person to do the job of multiple people. Will it replace all people? No. But even if it allows 1 person to do the job of 2 people, that's 50% of the workforce unemployed. This isn't even mentioning how good robotics have gotten over the past 10 years.

3volver ,

One of the best decisions I made was deleting my Facebook. I really mean that, one of the best decisions in my entire life. Not getting sucked into the absolute bullshit fest that greedy shit fuckers like Mark Zuckerberg set up for humanity is extremely relieving. Don't compare yourself to other people, you be you, just try to be your best self, it's worth it. Don't let the billionaire leeches of society take everything from you, fuck Facebook.

3volver ,

How do you suggest producing a significant amount of thrust in a vacuum using the sun?

3volver ,

Solar sails don't produce a significant amount of thrust, you didn't answer my question.

3volver ,

You can't launch a rocket using solar. Nuclear is exactly what helium-3 will provide. Speculation is the first step of exploiting the Moon's value.

Do your research before acting like you know what you're writing about. There are so many things to complain about when it comes to capitalism, this is not one of them.

EA wants to place in-game ads in its full-price AAA games, again (www.techspot.com)

EA has tried this before, with predictable results. In 2020, EA Sports UFC 4 included full-screen ads for the Amazon Prime series The Boys that would appear during 'Replay' moments. These were absent from the game when it launched, with EA introducing the ads about a month later, thereby preventing them from being highlighted in...

3volver ,

Dead Space from 2008 is such a good game. EA has fallen so far. I don't see myself ever buying another EA game at this point.

3volver ,

That's all they are now. RIP EA Redwood Shores. 🥲

3volver ,

The enshittification is very real and is spreading constantly. Companies will leech more from their employees and users until things start to break down. Acceleration is the only way.

3volver ,

That's a terrible analogy, implying the wish that everyone on the plane dies if one engine fails.

It's like an airline company has been complete shit for decades, wanting to see them fail fast so that a better airline company can take their place.

I wonder if you're capable of experiencing the irony of writing that, or are just as stupid as you claim all humans to be. Are you stupid? Do you trust yourself to write things that make sense? Just asking based on your own generalized claim. Unless of course you are a bot, then this comment is a waste of time.

    3volver ,

Doesn't sound insane to me, sounds like a perfect example of the state of the US healthcare system. I stopped paying for healthcare 2 years ago, best decision I ever made.

    3volver ,

I'd go further to argue that it's very necessary for robots to have even more mobility such as wheels to take advantage of momentum and increase efficiency. There's a reason the wheel was invented, things like bicycles, wheelbarrows, etc.

The ANYmal wheeled legged robot is an example of that.

    https://newatlas.com/robotics/anymal-swiss-mile-quadruped-wheeled-standing-robot/

    3volver ,

A robot doesn’t have that weakness.

Robots have battery capacity limitations, they get "tired" in a different way. Your claim is true if you invent a battery that never runs out of power.

Anyone who still uses Twitter/X is an actual fucking moron.

    3volver ,

International journalists should know better than to use a centralized platform to share information.

    3volver ,

That doesn't sound like a shit show at all. It would have been a shit show if it started spouting nonsense and racist shit, and it didn't do that. You were able to look that up using other means anyway. I think you just made a statement about why decentralization is important, and not relying on a single source.

    3volver ,

How else do you propose storing energy?

    3volver ,

I just read: "Biden administration set to greenlight $18 billion sale of F-15 fighter jets to Israel"

    Oh sure... he's "outraged".

    3volver ,

Rimworld comes to mind as well, pretty much any colony management or "life sim" style game.

    3volver ,

Thank you for taking the time to write this. The disinformation around nuclear power is extremely damaging to humanity.

    3volver ,

Linux Mint has been good so far, but Debian is still the one I'm going to use mainly.

    3volver ,

Yet they're still able to put those stupid fucking recycling labels on their products as if it's recycled.

We had a brief chance to elect Sanders and we failed. Hillary gave us Trump.

“This issue was not directly caused by a cybersecurity event; rather, it was caused by a third-party provider during a configuration change.”

    Sounds probable.

Cool I hope it works out, more alternatives aren't a bad thing.

IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states (arstechnica.com)

"Direct File provides a free, secure option for taxpayers with simple tax situations in 12 states to file their taxes directly with the IRS," the Treasury Department said. "Direct File is easy to use, with no hidden junk fees, and works as well on a smartphone as it does on a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. Direct File...

Imagine going to the only grocery store available, there are no prices on any of the items, you shop there because you're starving and have no choice.

You go to the checkout after each time you shop and there is a single cashier that says this:

"Fuck you. In about a couple months we'll demand that you figure out how much you owe us. If you don't figure it out then we'll potentially place criminal charges against you. Thanks for shopping here."

You realize that you have no fucking clue about how much the stuff you bought costs because it changes all the time and nothing is labelled and there's no system for keeping track.

Welcome to the tax system in America.

One anonymous employee told Reuters, "You’d think the world’s leading Internet company would have worked this out."

You don't think that's exactly why they constructed that building the way they did? WiFi is much less secure than a wired connection. It makes much more sense to me that they knew it would make WiFi not work as well to get more employees to used wired connections for security reasons.

    3volver ,

More people will switch to Linux once and for all.

    3volver ,

I am grateful for Lemmy as well. Reddit has become a censored hivemind of shit. The enshittification is real.

    3volver ,

Holy shit this had me laughing hard. Someone paid $3k for that shit? 😂

This is what happens when you let billionaire leeches like Elon make decisions rather than real engineers.

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America (www.cbsnews.com)

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America::For a century, the U.S. Government-owned the largest helium reserve in the country, but the biggest exporters now are in Russia, Qatar and Tanzania. With this new discovery, Minnesota could be joining that list.

    3volver ,

That argument makes sense, it's hard to view finding new helium deposits as good news if we keep wasting helium.
As far as I can tell though, helium is already becoming much more expensive which may lead to less waste. It will become more scarce and expensive before the technology gets better at capturing it and storing it.

That's exactly who billionaires who have yachts and private jets want you to take your anger out on. Good job falling for it.

    3volver ,

Don't tell me what to do. Going to spend more time learning to code from now on, thanks.

For anyone who needs a reminder: user account ≠ human individual user. There are no bot/captcha protections nor IP restrictions on Lemmy. I'd say we have less than 1 million actual human individual users.
