I had been publishing articles on my own website since 2003, but I did that mostly manually by writing whole HTML pages.

Huh, so literally raw html? I know it's not too difficult, but I have wondered occasionally how many small websites may have been written that way.

Tbh I didn't mean to Lemmy, so much as simply off Twitter in general, preferably to a non-corporate social site. It may be naive/idealistic, but I think those most inclined to leave would be the better of the bunch, and those in-between are more apt to go to another corporate site anyway (e.g. Threads).

Why do tech journalists keep using the businesses' language about AI, such as "hallucination", instead of glitching/bugging/breaking?

When I wrote "processing", I meant it in the sense of getting to that "shape" of an appropriate response you describe. If I'd meant this in a conscious sense I would have written, "poorly understood prompt/query", for what it's worth, but I see where you were coming from.

It's not a bad article, honestly, I'm just tired of journalists and academics echoing the language of businesses and their marketing. "Hallucinations" aren't accurate for this form of AI. These are sophisticated generative text tools, and in my opinion lack any qualities that justify all this fluff terminology personifying them.

Also frankly, I think students have one of the better applications for large-language model AIs than many adults, even those trying to deploy them. Students are using them to do their homework, to generate their papers, exactly one of the basic points of them. Too many adults are acting like these tools should be used in their present form as research aids, but the entire generative basis of them undermines their reliability for this. It's trying to use the wrong tool for the job.

You don't want any of the generative capacities of a large-language model AI for research help, you'd instead want whatever text-processing it may be able to do to assemble and provide accurate output.

This is the problem I take with this, there's no perception in this software. It's faulty, misapplied software when one tries to employ it for generating reliable, factual summaries and responses.

Yeah, on further thought and as I mention in other replies, my thoughts on this are shifting toward the real bug of this being how it's marketed in many cases (as a digital assistant/research aid) and in turn used, or attempted to be used (as it's marketed).

Fun part is, that article cites a paper mentioning misgivings with the terminology: AI Hallucinations: A Misnomer Worth Clarifying. So at the very least I'm not alone on this.

Hello, i was looking for a wysiwyg html editors i could use for my personal website, perferrably just as a simple open source desktop program on linux (though anything else is fine). i DID find something called KompoZer but i was wondering if there's any other ones, thanks

Have you seen Publii yet? Dunno how well it works on Linux, but there's a version for Linux as well.

Is this ever noted in any of the documentation, outside of some fine print, with the printer to let someone know that it's being done? If your product is secretly leaving indicators for anyone aware of the indicators to track your actions in some way, that's problematic in my opinion.

Given a printer is arguably a lesser issue anymore, but the same idea applies with other tech.

Yeah, to clarify I don't mean organizing/arranging files as a part of maintenance, moreso handling different installs/configs/updating. Sometimes since more folks come around to ask for help it can appear as if it's all much more involved to maintain than it may otherwise be (with a mix of the right setups and knowledge to deal with any hiccups).

When I hosted game servers: Depending on the game, you may have to fix something every few hours. Arma 3 is, by far, the worst. Which really sucks because the games can last really long, and it can be annoying to save and load with the GM tool thing.

Was that a mix of games being more involved and the way their server software was set up, from what you could tell, or...?

...What are these? Something to do with hydrogen? Despite it not making sense for you to write it that way if you meant H2O, I really enjoy the silly idea of a water generator (as in, making water, not running off water).

Which is a fair point, because AI has never meant “general AI”, it’s an umbrella term for a wide variety of intelligence like tasks as performed by computers.

Do you mean in the everyday sense or the academic sense? I think this is why there's such grumbling around the topic. Academically speaking that may be correct, but I think for the general public, AI has been more muddled and presented in a much more robust, general AI way, especially in fiction. Look at any number of scifi movies featuring forms of AI, whether it's the movie literally named AI or Terminator or Blade Runner or more recently Ex Machina.

Each of these technically may be presenting general AI, but for the public, it's just AI. In a weird way, this discussion is sort of an inversion of what one usually sees between academics and the public. Generally academics are trying to get the public not to use technical terms loosely, yet here some of the public is trying to get some of the tech/academic sphere to not, at least as they think, use technical terms loosely.

Arguably it's from a misunderstanding, but if anyone should understand the dynamics of language, you'd hope it would be those trying to calibrate machines to process language.

All that aside, the point is that people talking about how it’s not “real AI” often come across as people who don’t know what they’re talking about, which was the point of the image.

The funny part is, as I mention in my comment, isn't that how both parties to these conversations feel? The problem is they're talking past each other, but the worst part is, arguably the more educated participant should be more apt to recognize this and clarify or better yet, ask for clarification so they can see where the disconnect is emerging to improve communication.

Also, let's remember that it's not the laypeople describing the technology in general personified terms like "learning" or "hallucinating", which furthers some of the grumbling.

I know Thunderbird technically has them, but I've had trouble making them work as effectively as I'd like. RSSOwl had some that were easier to work with, but stopped being updated. There's now a fork of it called RSSOwlnix, but I haven't taken the time to see whether it still works as well or not. May be worth looking into though...

As a lil' heads up, this post is from an antiwork community. That aside, which kind of work are you getting fulfillment from? Another comment here makes a good point that these terms are sort of loaded with different meanings for each of us.

Personally I don't find much of my work satisfying because I find it difficult to keep it from helping big businesses in some way.

I follow ya. I feel like busywork is probably one of the better words to describe what many in antiwork communities are getting at. Unfulfilling, often for someone else and to their greater profit/benefit over yours and others' own with seemingly no other purpose than that.

In a lot of ways it's a more familiar way of talking about alienated labor without putting people off.

Have you tried/looked into Joplin yet? If I understand right, I think the one box it doesn't tick unfortunately is the first (at least in the Android app), as it supports markdown which is only rendered after leaving edit mode.

However, it does have checkboxes and the whole note doesn't have to be a checklist. You can write a description, add your checklist, add a horizontal separator line, another description, another checklist, all in the same note. It's also FOSS and actively updated. Bonus as well is that it can be used with Syncthing to sync notes to your other devices, and there's a desktop version which has some more flexibility over the Android app.

They're not also locked into Facebook? It seems like far too many public services communicate through these non-public platforms (i.e. often more easily viewed or sometimes only viewable with an account).

    What would one recommend as more of a custom build version of these with a way to connect a convenient remote (smartphone or otherwise)? Alternatively is there a way to sort of jailbreak many of them, or does that just become more cumbersome?
