That's the spirit. All conflict in the world can be resolved by the crushing and inescapable weight of adult responsibilities.

Alk ,

If you're on desktop, check out freetube instead of the buggy mess that is piped links.

Alk ,

Yeah google maps is still the GOAT as much as I wish it wasn't.

Alk ,

Freetube is not a website, but a desktop application that massively improves the usability over YouTube's UX. It doesn't serve the same purpose as an ad blocker, which also works well for its purpose.

Alk ,

Yeah in that case I agree. Tons of people have their preferred YouTube frontend, or application, or way of using YouTube itself, and we can all get YouTube links to automatically redirect to our preferred method, but if someone links their preferred frontend directly, anyone who uses a different method all of a sudden can't use it automatically.

Alk ,

Clearly they're not bringing the goods, they're bringing the services. That clown even said it himself. Refers to goods and services then only talks about the goods.

Alk ,

Isn't thaumaturge a specific kind of magician separate from others?

Alk ,

Then so is the question. The answer is yes. The specifics and timeline are what people disagree on.

Alk ,

Damn I missed it. What was the juicy comment that got -27?

Alk ,

Highly recommend this. It takes some time setting a default instance that isn't down or broken for some sites but worth it.

Alk ,

Then we have to wait til they drop the legendary VPN-quad-busta

Alk ,

This is non-news, like all tech companies, they are bound by law to do this. It happens more than 6000 times per year for Proton. However, this user just had bad opsec. Proton emails are all encrypted and cannot be read unless law enforcement gets your password, which Proton does not have access to. Even if Proton hands over all data.

Alk ,

Yeah. Even if they couldn't hand over recovery emails, having a personal email as a backup to a "private and sensitive" email account is bad practice.

Alk ,

I don't believe you need that field with Proton, correct me if I'm wrong. If you do need that field with an email provider, and you need complete opsec, use a different provider.

Alk ,

That's a good question. I know good vpns like mullvad do not and can not log ips/traffic without changes to their backend, I wonder if they could claim "it's impossible" or something (clearly bogus, but the argument could be "with our current infrastructure, I.e. We can't afford to redo our systems to comply")

Alk ,

"If law enforcement is going to look at my data, I'll give them something to look at" lmao

Check out this video that discusses the difficulties in balancing difficulty (ha) for games with configurable levels of difficulty.

I have windows 11, and with startallback and directory opus both of which I had on 10) it's indistinguishable from 10. No benefits, no drawbacks. Honestly should have saved the trouble and not installed.

Alk ,

Personally I don't trust companies who aggressively advertise like they do, but that's not a real reason grounded in evidence. It just tends to be correct. I recommend Mullvad.

Alk ,

I use Proton vpn and love it. I actually like mullvad more as a standalone vpn, but Proton vpn is still great and I use it because of the whole bundle. It's a great deal and VERY convenient. The unlimited email aliases built in seamlessly to the password manager is a game changer for easy to use privacy.

Alk , (edited )

Others have linked it to you but let me tell you why I like it. It lets you generate a new email alias and password instantly whenever you make a new online account somewhere. Or just whenever you want. I've been slowly changing all my accounts over to their own unique email alias that can't be tied back to my main email. My main address is known by nobody at all.

The main benefits are if someone steals a password, the email address that comes with it will only be useful for that one account. (I don't need to go over the benefits of a standard password manager.) and so if that email is leaked or added to a spam list, I simply delete that address after changing the address for the single account it was used for. I can tell exactly which address is getting spam easily. 0 spam. Ever. Spam email has been solved for me.

Proton remembers which sites use which email/password as well.

Other than that, it's just good for privacy. Having a different email for each account makes it harder to track a user across accounts.

These addresses are somewhat auto generated, with the name of the site along with a random word and a few numbers. But if you want to create another email address, you get a handful of custom ones for free with the subscription too. You can revoke these the same way, so you can have a professional looking email to hand out to people that's not auto generated, without giving out your account's root email address.

Edit: I also want to specify that while all of this is technically possible through other means, Proton makes it easier than any other option. Plus access to a good vpn, a nice replacement for Google drive (for storage and basic editing, at least) in addition to the email service and password manager mentioned above. A very good deal, in my opinion.

Edit 2: it sure sounds like I'm a paid shill but I can assure you I just really fucking love Proton and I get too excited about things.

I have seen the video, but I'm missing the context with LeBron. What is the reference?

Making all of your bill payments a month in advance

Alk ,

There really are just a lot of us. Many English speaking platforms will naturally be filled with US folks because of the sheer number of us.

Alk ,

Yeah, discord is for running a community not just chatting in voice.

Alk , (edited )

It is but there's just not enough content to get me to fully stop YouTube yet. YouTube still has so much long form content only on YouTube.

That being said, nebula is amazing and you all should check it out and support the creators using it.

Alk ,

At least regarding the enshittification, I've started using FreeTube to access all my YouTube content and it has completely negated all enshittification so far. It's such a great way to watch my subscriptions.

Alk ,

Get Google fi if it's available. Very consumer friendly. Actually let me rephrase that. More consumer friendly than most other cell providers. But it's still Google.

At least all the pricing and features are straight forward and they don't lock any features (like Hotspot) behind paywalls.

Alk ,

Yeah. I haven't used mint, but the apps, account management and overall ease of use and transparency is legendary with Google fi. Those things are also easy to overlook. It's just so easy and doesn't get in my way when I want to manage something like all other carriers.

Alk ,

What is everyone's opinions on the sound quality of vinyl?

I understand the collectibility of physical media, and the novelty of owning a vinyl and the machine that plays them. The large art piece that is the case (and often the disc itself). Showing support for your favorite artists by owning physical media from them.

Those are great reasons to collect vinyl.

But a lot of my friends claim vinly is of higher audio quality than anything else, period. This is provably false, but it seems to be a common opinion.

How often have you seen this and what are your thoughts on it?

Alk ,

Yeah honestly society to them might be some terrible psychological horror. The small things you can do to get you arrested like walking into a forest (trespassing), removing restrictive garments (public nudity), sleeping in a comfy field of grass in the one area without monolithic grey cliffs (sleeping in a park where it's not allowed), picking up and using a tool (theft) etc etc. It's a nightmare realm with black magic machines, eternal sun indoors, unclean air, no natural food sources in cities, loud sounds everywhere and uncooperative people.

I thought the joke here was that even when they're not locked your average inkjet printer is a hot pile of garbage machinery that works only when the planets align and you've sacrificed 3 goats and a your firstborn.

Meanwhile laster jet printers work most of the time except when they don't.

Edit: one time I wanted to buy more ink for my inkjet and there was a brand new inkjet printer that came with ink that was less expensive than a new cartridge. (Of the same size)

The new printer was $30 and worked just as poorly as my $150 inkjet.

I've done printer maintenance for years among other things and inkjets are literally designed and manufactured in the deepest layer of hell.

Alk ,

Does bitwarden allow me to automatically create a new randomized email address for every new saved login I create, that forwards to my secret main address? That's the main thing that's keeping me with Proton. Every online account is a different email. When I start getting spam because one leaked, I simply delete that email address, problem solved. Something like the Gmail plus thing doesn't work since I can't arbitrarily delete an alias that way when I want to.

Alk ,

By your metrics, possiblylinix127, Linux is also a system that is used for piracy. I can do piracy on Linux. That makes it illegal!

Alk ,

Managing my blu ray library. Among other things. What are you using Linux for that isn't piracy?

Alk ,

Plus you can't arbitrarily delete them to nuke an entire website account if you wanted to.

Alk ,

Not quite the same as Proton, you have to use your own domain and set all that up, and I already mentioned the plus thing isn't an option for obvious reasons. Still good, but not quite as good.

Alk ,

I wonder what the expected answer to this question was lol. Did they expect a no, then to swoop in with a "gotcha"?

Alk ,

Wow, grouchy indeed. If you don't already use a YouTube front-end you only have yourself to blame. Any YouTube link I click redirects to my preferred front-end (FreeTube via invidious). I haven't given YouTube a single bit of traffic and still get to watch any video I want. It takes 5 minutes to set it all up at the most.

I always love that that's a meme there because it's a totally valid and common question with modpacks. Despite its meme status, it still is a very frequent question. It's the kind of meme where no matter how much awareness it gets, it will never help reduce the root cause of random shit appearing in game and nobody knowing what it is or how to remove it. Even if people learn the mods, there is always a new one that adds random shit on screen that 3 people in the universe know about. It's more like a motto than a meme now.

    Alk ,

Same here. I count the days until it's discovered that I'm just a normie who agrees with the ideology of open source, and am hanged for my crimes of not knowing what a "cron" is, thinking stdout has to do with diseases, or wanting to play video games with 0 troubleshooting haha.

    Alk ,

If it makes you feel better I feel the same, I was primarily a pc and networking hardware guy before my current role, which I won't say but it's closer to hardware than programming.
