Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don't think the award system is the only place where they messed up...

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

That actually took me a second to understand, but it's a good one

If you have a hacked Switch you can use mtp-server or ftpd. I like the MTP approach, it works just like DeckyMTP on the Steam Deck.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

They also make obtaining games for a reasonable price impossible, so hacking the switch is kinda necessary. And they make playing games with reasonable frame rates impossible, so emulating the Switch on a powerful PC is reasonable.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

They get money from Google, Google makes money from ads, if they start blocking ads, Google would probably end their deal with Mozilla

Without uBlock Origin? Not really. Not Firefox's fault, the internet just transformed into a massive ad-infested shithole, but still, it's unusable without an adblocker.

@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Pop!_OS will soon transition away from GNOME to their own desktop environment called Cosmic, because they realized that GNOME sucks.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Damn, that's another thing about Firefox that absolutely drives me crazy. They implement some feature as an extension, then they include it with the browser by default and just leave the extension there for some reason. It's the exact same thing with Firefox translations, it's integrated into the browser now but they still have an extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-translations/

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

But that only applies to apps that have a lower target than Android 6, right?

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Once there are some fundamental changes in the Android framework, these old apps will actually become incompatible. So Google wants to prepare their users for that scenario, and force devs to update their apps.

Maybe ask in !gamedev?

Lemmy community discovery isn't great, I like to use lemmyverse.net to search for communities across all instances

You can't access the normal Reddit site behind a VPN either. The only solution is to use a private frontend like Redlib with LibRedirect, to automatically redirect all Reddit links to Redlib.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Or use LibRedirect to do it automatically

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The only browser plugin you need for Reddit is LibRedirect to automatically redirect all Reddit links to a private frontend called Redlib

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

The only decent way to browse Reddit nowadays is a private frontend called Redlib. You can use the LibRedirect browser extension or the UntrackMe Android app to automatically redirect all Reddit links to Redlib. It's better for privacy, since you don't need to access Reddit directly and thus your information isn't exposed, it works without JavaScript, it doesn't have ads or trackers and works behind a VPN or Tor. It also lets you view NSFW content without any limitations.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You can use UntrackMe on Android or Privacy Redirect on iOS. Or if you are on Anndroid and use Firefox or a fork of it like Mull or Fennec, you can install LibRedirect there.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

LibreWolf > Firefox

Mull on Android

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Me neither, at least I haven't logged into my account to browse reddit. Occasionally I click on a Reddit because it's the result of my web search. But I always use a private frontend called Redlib for that, LibRedirect automatically redirects all Reddit links to Redlib, it's really useful. UntrackMe does the same on Android, Privacy Redirect on iOS.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Just use LibRedirect with Redlib

You. don't. need. a. dumb. phone. to fix your social media addiction

Basically every modern smartphone has features that allow you to restrict your usage of distracting apps/websites. You can recreate a minimalistic dumb phone on your smartphone using free & open source software or your operating system's built-in tools/features. There are a few good videos about this:

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This is pretty well explained in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OybGwwGc20

I understand why, but dumbphones aren't good solutions for most people's problems. They have many disadvantages, for example they don't offer secure (encrypted) communications (except for the Punkt MP02 which has Signal support, but it also has other issues), you don't get a proper keyboard, no touchscreen, and you often can't even look something up on Wikipedia. You can't listen to music/podcasts, use the phone for navigation or take notes. Most people just end up getting frustrated by a dumb phone, and switch back to a smartphone and continue wasting their time on social media. A decluttered smart phone with restrictions for social media usage is much more effective. The videos I linked in my original comment explain this pretty well.

This puts the Israeli fascists one step closer to the Nazi government in from 1933-1945 in Germany

And I'm sure that there's a completely closed, separated and proprietary subsystem in your CPU that has access to everything happening on your computer. Literally everything, all input and output, everything the CPU is doing, just everything. Look up Intel ME or AMD PSP

Use Bazzite or Aurora if you want an amazing, Fedora Silverblue/Universal Blue-based KDE experience, it's much better than normal Fedora anyway

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

By default it uses KDE instead of GNOME, you have the choice though. It makes some stuff easier for new users. Bazzite is also optimized for gaming and in some areas tries to mimic the Steam Deck experience pretty closely. It also includes all the Universal Blue goodness like ujust (basically a collection of scripts that is very helpful for quickly installing and setting up various things on your system). It also includes some quality-of-life improvements in the Terminal. You could compare it to Nobara, but built on top of Fedora Atomic (Kinoite). Check out their website for more information: https://bazzite.gg/

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Oh I never really noticed. Excited to try it out.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ok that makes sense, but wtf I just realized that it's $10/month, Mullvad is 5€ which is $5.38 and they even give you a 10% discount if you pay with crypto

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

LibRedirect automates most of that for you. Also, I've been using safereddit.com for over 6 months and never had any issues. Just try it out and see if it works for you :)

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It fetches an updated list of working instances. It also has a built-in tool that let's you ping all instances and remove the broken ones. I'm pretty sure this will work well, even if you remove all instances except for safereddit.com. That's another way you can use it: Just find one working instance and remove all the others.

Can we please have some RISC-V chips that aren't made in China?

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Israel and China are both authoritarian shitholes, but China is much worse. Boycott both of them, as well as all the other authoritarian shitholes on this planet

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Use an adblocker in your browser and an ad-blocking DNS server like Mullvad DNS (it's super easy on Android, just search for Private DNS in the settings and set it to base.dns.mullvad.net), AdGuard DNS (same thing, super easy, just set it to dns.adguard-dns.com) or NextDNS on your phone (and ideally on all your other devices). There's also an app called AdAway, but it takes up the VPN slot so you can't use it together with a VPN.

@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You definitely haven't seen Bazzite yet
