It's a great app, unfortunately it's not open-source. According to the Exodus report, it contains some tracking SDKs, but their network activity can be blocked in DNS. It also displays an ad banner by default, but this can easily be turned off in the settings.

I was about to write this exact comment

Wait why the fuck does the FCC only consist of 5 people?!?

Andromxda ,

Kinda hard to compare that to a country with 300 million citizens

Andromxda ,

Oh yeah, you're right. I meant the FCC, just got a little confused there, but I know that these are separate bodies. But still, just 5 people in charge of it? Seems kinda strange to me.

Andromxda ,

Ok sure, that makes sense

Andromxda ,

Use Firefox (or a hardened fork like Mull) with uBlock Origin and you'll never see this BS again

Andromxda ,

Mulch ain't the worst, but there are better options. Generally, I would recommend a Firefox-based browser instead of Chromium, because it has full extension support (including adblockers). You can check out this comparison chart, or this one.

Andromxda ,

Firefox, Fennec and Mull are a thing

Andromxda ,

You can just use uBlock Origin with this list to hide the cookie notices: https://www.i-dont-care-about-cookies.eu/abp/

Andromxda ,

You can (and probably should) configure Firefox to automatically block all 3rd party cookies

Andromxda ,

These cookie consent notices are mostly about 3rd-party cookies. In fact, they often don't let you completely reject cookies, you can just choose whether you want 3rd-party cookies.

Andromxda ,

Mull is a firefox-based browser developed by DivestOS, Mulch is developed by the same team but it's based on Chromium

Andromxda ,

Good. Honestly, great! The EU should do the same. Fuck the CCP and their propaganda machine that brainwashes people all over the world!

Apple pulls WhatsApp, Threads and Signal from app store in China (www.washingtonpost.com)

Apple has complied with the Chinese government's request to remove several popular communication apps from its app store, including WhatsApp, Threads, Signal, and Telegram, due to national security concerns. This action was taken following a directive from the Cyberspace Administration of China. These apps have been crucial for...

Imagine your operating system getting so bloated, that your bloat starts installing more bloat

Andromxda ,

I’m honestly even thinking to buy a €200 android device to get used to the system.

Don't do that, I can tell you from experience: Most of them suck, especially cheap Chinese ones.

The Google Pixel 7a is currently $350 and it will get cheaper when the 8a comes out. The 7a will get security updates until May 2028. If you want to get into mobile device privacy/security, a Pixel is an excellent choice. You can install an alternative operating system called GrapheneOS, it's a much more private and secure, improved version of Android. It doesn't include Google spyware and thus also improves battery life. It also extends your feature updates, by default the 7a would only get feature updates until 2026, but GrapheneOS provides Android feature updates as long as the device gets security updates. That would mean 2 additional years of Android feature updates. I highly recommend it!

If you want a native client for Piped on your phone, check out LibreTube

If you want something closer to NewPipe on your PC, check out Invidious, Tubo or FreeTube if you want a native client. There's also an Invidious client for Android called Clipious.

You can also try out Tubular on your phone, it's a fork of NewPipe with some nice extra features like SponsorBlock integration

Andromxda ,

You can also install Windows on btrfs

Andromxda ,

I have no idea, just came across it on GitHub one day and found it pretty funny. It seems to be pretty unstable though.

Guess what? This will make them stronger. Suyu's GitLab repo was already DMCA'd, after that they set up their own Forgejo instance. They also get their website running again (It was down for a few days, I don't know the reason) and they're now strong and independent. Moving away from Discord will only increase their independence.

    Andromxda ,

    Suyu died though.

    What makes you think so?

Apparently there was some drama about the Yuzu devs using code which came from a switch SDK as a basis for emulator code, which kind of poisons the whole codebase.

But if this was in Yuzu, it's also present in every other fork, right? Also, was this a leaked Nintendo SDK or something 3rd-party?

    Andromxda ,

They're based in Germany, so it should be fine. But I think they said at some point that they don't want any trouble with DMCA code.

    Andromxda ,

The enshittification continues, but it doesn't affect me at all. Piracy the way to go nowadays that all streaming services suck. !piracy

    Andromxda ,

Technically it should't be against the rules, since I don't link directly to any pirated content.

    Andromxda ,

IIRC correctly that was the reason they stated for blocking the community.

A German state is ditching Windows and Microsoft Office for Linux and LibreOffice on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions (www.theregister.com)

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's most northern state, is starting its switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, and is planning to move from Windows to Linux on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions....

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

    Andromxda ,

Great, so Smart TVs won't even function as basic displays anymore.

    Andromxda ,

I think Navidrome is much better, it also supports the Subsonic API

    Andromxda ,

I think Gonic is much more complicated for new users. It doesn't even have a web client. Navidrome is fairly easy to deploy using Docker.

    Andromxda ,

Damn, why don't they let you install something else?

    Andromxda ,

Can you atleast install Flatpaks and GNOME Extensions? AFAIK these don't require root. Distrobox might also work.

    Andromxda ,

I see. Sorry for you that you have to use GNOME. But check out Guake if you're looking for a Quake-style terminal. Tilix also has a Quake mode. I'm glad I found a fellow Quake-style terminal enjoyer :) I actually need to use macOS for work and I'm very thankful I found an option in iTerm2 for a dropdown terminal. I honestly can't live without one.

    Andromxda ,

    Right I kinda missed that

Email service that integrates well with Thunderbird?

I hope I'm not annoying you kind folks too much with my ongoing Tutamail woes, but, in the long slow process of divorcing myself from them (and returning to Thunderbird), I'm looking for an email host/provider that integrates well with TB, meaning that it can sync mail, contacts, calendars, and tasks between the Linux desktop...
