You don't need NetGuard. GrapheneOS has a built in, more reliable firewall. You can access it by going to the settings -> privacy -> permission manager and selecting Network. Also, you can't use a VPN when using NetGuard, so I recommend dropping NetGuard and using a VPN, as well as the built-in firewall instead.

Check out Calyx VPN and Riseup VPN. They are run by voluntary, non-profit organizations. If you need maximum security, consider routing your traffic through Tor, using the Orbot app (it's not in the main F-Droid repo, you need to add the Guardian Project repo). There's also Windscribe VPN, but it has limited bandwidth.

WriteFreely is pretty nice, it uses the ActivityPub protocol and is thus a part of the Fediverse - just like Lemmy and Mastodon.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

What cloud vps server host do I use?

What cloud VPS host is the best for privacy and security? I want to self host stuff for myself some tools. Mental Outlaw make a video last year about self hosting your own VPN with a service called Vultr but back in December vultr added to their TOS that they own what you host and a bunch of other scary stuff. So I don't trust...

Check out Njalla, Kyun, 1984 Hosting and OrangeWebsite. I think they all accept crypto payments (including Monero!) BitLaunch is a reseller for Linode and Vultr that allows you to pay with crypto, and hostingbydesign is a Hetzner reseller that doesn't require KYC.

I always hated Samsung for their shitty business practices, and the way they dealt with their customers in terms of device repairability

Plug-in systems are built around a microinverter that feeds solar energy back into the home via a standard wall jack.

What the actual fuck?

What's wrong with that? That's how basically any balcony solar system works.

Andromxda ,

These systems automatically turn themselves off during an outage.

But now some genius doesn’t read the fine print and hooks up 2 or 3 on the same circuit. There is no electrician that tells him that’s dangerous because it’s all self installed and he doesn’t know any better. And all of a sudden you are up to 26.5A and you got glowing, smoking wires in your walls…

Ok sure, that makes sense. This might actually be an issue.

Fairphone needs to take security seriously and add support for hardware security features, in order for that to happen. https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/112320854846225341

What they're doing in regards to the environment and paying their workers fair wages (throughout the entire supply chain) is great - unfortunately their security practices aren't. I think buying a Pixel second hand is the best option, it also saves you some money. You already get extended security updates by using GrapheneOS, as they provide full OS updates for the entire period in which Google supplies (firmware) security updates (which tends to be a few years more than they provide Android feature updates. e.g. the Pixel 6a gets 3 years of feature updates but 5 years of security updates. GrapheneOS provides feature updates for the full 5 years).

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I wouldn't recommend anything older than a Pixel 6, because the 5a will reach its EOL in August, and all the older devices already reached their EOL. Regarding the modem, I don't know what you are talking about, I never had any issues on the 6a and the 7 Pro, and never heard about such issues. But feel free to explain this to me.

Isn't the 6T like ancient? Also, bye bye app compatibility and battery life when running postmarketOS.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

They should have also mentioned GrapheneOS

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Still glad they mentioned this topic at all. I wouldn't have expected it from LTT.

Enjoy your spyware-free degoogled experience! Feel free to dm me if you have any questions. I'd say I'm quite experienced with GrapheneOS, degoogling and Android in general.

Google Fi is the one thing I have no experience with, as I'm not American. But all SIMs should work fine on Graphene, and eSIMs are supported through a compatibility layer, which enables Google's proprietary eSIM management tool (this is not the same as Sandboxed Google Play services, and you don't need Google Play for eSIMs). All the eSIMs and physical SIMs I tried work just fine. Google Fi seems to work, according to this thread on the Graphene Forum: https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/7950-does-grapheneos-work-with-google-fi/6

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

As far as I can see, no. But what benefit would that really have? Network settings (including mobile networks) are global. The only thing that's profile-specific is your VPN setting. You can only disable a profile's ability to use the phone/SMS feature. Profiles generally manage apps, user data and some settings.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ok that actually makes sense. I just realized that the fucking iPhone has this feature, but Android doesn't. GrapheneOS doesn't implement any custom features that aren't privacy/security related. And no, unfortunately you don't get a second VPN slot either.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Pretty hard. If you don't have prior experience with the AOSP codebase, I'd say it's impossible. But if you want to get started, this is how to build GrapheneOS from source: https://grapheneos.org/build

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

There might be an easier way to accomplish this. The RethinkDNS app has a built-in Firewall and WireGuard VPN client. It also allows you to configure per-app Wifi and cellular data separately. The only caveat is that you would need to manually import the WireGuard profiles from your VPN provider.

They even have a guide on how to install Linux: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/install

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You don't have to choose between binary and source, you can get some pre-compiled packages that you don't care about, but e.g. run a custom kernel at the same time.

Linux Mint, Pop!_OS and ZorinOS are pretty nice for new users. If you want to get a little more advanced, maybe check out something like Fedora Atomic (e.g. Kinoite, Silverblue) or Universal Blue (Bazzite, Aurora, Bluefin). Arch isn't actually that hard, they have an installation script that makes everything super easy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YE1LlTxfMQ), or you could watch a video on how to install it manually (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JYIAaLrwcY, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC7NMbl4goo)

Never really used Excel or LibreOffice Calc either, but I think it should be fine. OnlyOffice is another option to check out.

I'm waiting for some FOSS developers to hack this thing and run custom firmware on it. Or someone who creates their own "Car Thing" using an Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I recommend Bazzite instead. It's based on Universal Blue (which is actually based on Fedora Atomic) and gives you a super easy and stable experience.

Everybody buy pirate your music. These streaming platforms are trash.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No need for Telegram bots. There are both proprietary and open source apps that you can use to do this yourself. Check out https://rentry.org/firehawk52 and https://ripped.guide/Audio/Music/

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Both. Buy physical media, rip the audio files and put them on your selfhosted music server (e.g. Navidrome). Or pirate the music and buy some merch to compensate the artists.

Andromxda ,

Ok that's reasonable

Thanks for this suggestion, I'm trying it out right now. It looks promising!

Edit: It requires identity verification

Alternatives to Google Docs/sheets?

What are people using in place of Google docs/sheets/etc? I'm looking for a simple program that syncs with the cloud so I can access my documents on my different computers or my Android phone. I run Windows 10 (don't crucify me). I use libre office for things that can stay on one computer, but for things like school notes,...

Andromxda , (edited )
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

If you use Nextcloud, there's either Nextcloud Office (which is actually Collabora Office) or OnlyOffice. As you already mentioned, Cryptpad is another alternative.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Stay away from proprietary crap like Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. There are enough FOSS alternatives out there:

  • You just want to message a friend/family member?
  • You need strong privacy/security/anonymity?
    • SimpleX
    • Session
    • Briar
    • I can't really tell you which one is the best, since I never used any of these (except for Session) for an extended period of time. Briar seems to be the best for anonymity, because it routes everything through the Tor network. SimpleX allows you to host your own node, which is pretty cool.
  • You want to host an online chatroom/community?
  • You need to message your team at work?
  • You want a Zoom alternative?
Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ok sure, it's more complicated in a corporate environment. But you can easily convince your friends to switch to Signal, I got almost all of my friends and family to use Signal and it's great.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Wdym? The user experience is basically 1:1 the same as on WhatsApp
