Crime goes down, means 📉

Less prisoners, means 🕊

Less prison profits, means 💸😱

New crimes are invented 👮‍♂️

And ain't it great how prisons are paid per prisoner by the state and also get to do some slave labor, as a treat. But when the profits are low, just complain to the state that you need to be paid more and have more prisoners, it's free money from your good friends on the senate.

I can pretty rarely get under $30 for just myself ($50 for two i consider quite the deal now) and we live in a city with many options, and most places i would order from are about a 10 minute drive. I'm not saying it's right or good, just that the prices you see are in line with what I've been seeing. Food is quite a bit more expensive right now.

CodexArcanum ,

Absolutely. Pandemic "inflation" threw all kinds of prices too high and nothing is coming back down because most industries are so small that they're all essentially oligarchies now.

I am dead certain that the pandemic has actually put the US into a hard recession which the Fed has been covering up with various tricks. I'm pretty sure that after the presidential election, whichever way it goes, the economy is going to tank.

"Match this fit" meme but it's all 80s and 90s Trek looks. (I think DS9's mirror universe fashion holds up pretty well.)

Ah Texas, where children can't make decisions or be held accountable in any way, unless they're brown skinned and can be accused of a crime, then they must he tried as adults and sentenced to life as an imprisoned slave.

Out past the planets is the heliopause, the final boundary between the solar system and interstellar space. Voyager discovered it, but other probes have confirmed it. The radiation and particles emitted by the sun create a pressurized bubble around it, where plasma (energized particles, mostly hydrogen) is much denser than past the heliopause. Cosmic rays are more prevalent outside it.

I've heard it compared to the empty zone around where a sink faucet first hits, creating a little "wall" of water around it as the splashing water pushes back the standing water.

"Empty" space is anything but. There's tons of particles and energy flying though it, just not as dense.

Some company heads hoped return-to-office mandates would make people quit, survey says (arstechnica.com)

Nearly two in five (37 percent) managers, directors, and executives believe their organization enacted layoffs in the last year because fewer employees than they expected quit during their RTO. And their beliefs are well-founded: One in four (25 percent) VP and C-suite executives and one in five (18 percent) HR pros admit they...

I really loved it (Pirate Enlightenment) as well. It's not as life changing a read as Debt or Dawn, but its a nice story and gives a little hope in the emergent nature of democracy. Who doesn't love a pirate story?

CodexArcanum ,

Its a very different scene in so many regards. I find it incomprehensible that an entire audience of people would notice a bald person, let alone all stop as one in the middle of the national anthem to laugh at them.

People in the past had no concepts of chill or minding their own business.

CodexArcanum ,

Graeber and Wengrow also suggest this is the origin of marketplaces. People had always traded, and would often hold regular festivals or holidays where merchants would gather to exchange goods.

But the permanent armies of sovereigns require upkeep. So it isn't just that you do taxes and create a gold economy, that's the seed step. Then local producers are "gently coerced" into bringing their goods to market regularly so the armies can supply from them.

In a sense, capitalism and policing arise from ever more efficient configurations through iterations of this cycle.

One of the commonly taught techniques for Root Cause Analysis is "five whys". Literally, just ask why up to fives times. Yes the Wikipedia page lists criticisms and yes, they include that sometimes 5 isn't enough, or that asking irrelevant whys or hitting the limits of your deeper knowledge or wandering into the wrong line of inquiry will all mislead you.

But I've had massively overpaid consultants at multiple companies explain to rooms full of adults that asking "why" can sometimes help you find the cause of problems.

'Vortex Cannon vs Drone' - Mark Rober shows off tech from a "defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems". That seems bad

I've enjoyed Mark Rober's videos for a while now. They are fun, touch on accessible topics, and have decent production value. But this recent video isn't sitting right with me...

I've gotten back into tinkering on a little Rust game project, it has about a dozen dependencies on various math and gamedev libraries. When I go to build (just like with npm in my JavaScript projects) cargo needs to download and build just over 200 projects. 3 of them build and run "install scripts" which are just also rust programs. I know this because my anti-virus flagged each of them and I had to allow them through so my little roguelike would build.

Like, what are we even suppose to tell "normal people" about security? "Yeah, don't download files from people you don't trust and never run executables from the web. How do I install this programming utility? Blindly run code from over 300 people and hope none of them wanted to sneak something malicious in there."

I don't want to go back to the days of hand chisling every routine into bare silicon by hand, but i feel l like there must be a better system we just haven't devised yet.

This. I mean the smoke-life tattoos, the joke that she's "smoking hot", the very idea of a 4-5 pack a day fitness instructor being absurd. As a person, she sounds unbearable but 10/10 as a comedy bit.

I'm thinking "Smoke Yoga" for a follow-up skit, legs behind her head with a cig held in her toes (get that feet weirdos demographic too).

Every Lemmy app I've used on Android auto-up-votes one's own posts and comments. Mainly been using Sync and Voyager.

I haven't seen an easy way in them to see who did the votes, but I do assume that's available info to some clients.

Considering how often I'll dig around in my old elisp files before giving up on using emacs again, I think I've actually spent more time configuring it than using it.

Use filtered water to wash your fruit, if it bothers you. Using a towel to wipe dry the fruit probably cleans it more than that 2 second rinse anyway.

Features for literal babies, I guess. "Little Elsa sleeps better when we put on the Blue right-wing propaganda disguised as children's shows."

CodexArcanum ,

This is accurate to the joke I was making, yes. Thank you for your service writing all that out, because I really didn't want to!

I'll add that Elsa (and Daenerys) were briefly the most popular names for girls in the US, so there's more than a few out there.

That kids-content crackdown has been very annoying for me. Many kids songs (or kid adjacent, like a lot of TMBG) is flagged as child content, which puts stupid restrictions on it like not being able to listen in the background. This even affects YT Music which makes listening to those songs in playlists and such difficult or impossible.

If you've never dug deeply into the ramifications of the Gates' charity work, you might be surprised how much they use charity and their organizations to exert influence and control over the regions they help. It isn't purely from the goodness of their hearts: billionaire philanthropy is both a PR tactic for washing over their bad behaviors and a way of creating a captive, dependent population that you can control.

I have a deck, a few old laptops that have all gone Linux now, and a windows desktop for gaming. The deck being so good, and Windows 11 being so bad, has nearly convinced me to try Linux on the actual desktop.

I think there are still a few games and applications (I'm primarily a C# dev for work) that I "need" Windows for but the case for dropping as much MS from my life as possible has never been stronger.

CodexArcanum ,

Hah, this is basically my operating rules as well. I get unreasonably paranoid about dropping them down stormdrains too, so I clutch those babies like a Karen's pearls until they're back in pocket!

Newbies are often afraid or insulted to use "handicap" pieces, but the few free pieces given to a lower-rank player are actually quite effective at adjusting the balance with unevenly ranked players. It's not a huge advantage and doesn't fundamentally change the play of the game.

Using different sizes of board is also neat. I'm very fond of a short game using only a 9x9 board. Plays a lot faster, but trades strategy for a more tactical game.

Unity owned ECS patent uses techniques described in 2013 Stack Exchange post (github.com)

The 2013 StackExchange post [^1] describes what is now commonly called an "archetype" based ECS architecture that was implemented as compile time archetypes in the author's open source project in Feb 2018 ^3. A similar ECS model was described later in the June 2018 patent filed by Unity ^2 and active since 2020....

Software patents are such evil bullshit. As if ECS hadn't been developed 20 years earlier and described in numerous papers and GDC talks after.

I mean, what kind of immortality are we talking about here?

If your cells have been locked into "last known good configuration" then there's no reason for anything inside you to evolve because nothing is changing.

Or maybe you aren't immutable, but like a ship of theseus, in which case why would your internal biome evolve away from the eternally balanced environment it lives in? Crabs haven't evolved for millenia because once perfection is achieved, where else can you evolve?

Tldr, what I'm saying is, vampires should be more worried about bursting with crabs than dinos.
