Unregulated capitalism is impossible by definition, because capitalism requires private property, and private property only exists because the state enforces that status.

SuddenDownpour ,

The vast majority of criticism towards .ml and others come from them being tankies, not communists. I'm a communist, by which I mean I want society to overcome social classes and hierarchies, and therefore, defending authoritarian states with hierarchies where the people on top enjoy political and economic privilege is contrary to communism.

SuddenDownpour ,

"Communism" is always going to be authoritarian if by "communism" you mean a government that attempts to control the whole of society. If by "communism" you mean a society where private property (not personal property) is democratically managed, that has nothing to do with authoritarism. Nor with the Soviet Union, or China, for that matter.

SuddenDownpour ,

I really only started to see the meaning of tankie start sliding once I got to Lemmy, and it goes in two directions; tankies who swear they aren’t tankies, they just have a lot of feelings about why the Uyghurs aren’t being mistreated, and liberals who literally think tankie is a synonym for leftist.

This was already happening in Reddit roughly 2 years ago.

SuddenDownpour ,

Only the inscrutable mind of an American can comprehend this.

SuddenDownpour ,

You're completely correct.

“Unlike priestesses and druidesses, who only unwillingly took ugly or crippled girls, sorcerers took anyone who showed evidence of a predisposition. If the child passes the first years of training, magic entered into the equation – straightening and evening out legs, repairing bones which had badly knitted, patching harelips, removing scars, birthmarks and pox scars. The young sorceress would become attractive because the prestige of her profession demanded it.

This is just another way in which the TV show butchered the original, although it is far below the ladder in comparison with the fact that they turned the endless interesting philosophical debates into dull, uninteresting conversations.

SuddenDownpour ,

Why is the collectivization of private property illegal? The law sure hates all the fun things :(

SuddenDownpour ,

Honestly, we should start asking what the fuck is wrong with the judges, too.

SuddenDownpour ,

You're a troll for pointing out problems with the meat industry? Did you fall from your crib and suffer brain damage?

SuddenDownpour ,

On top of the other answers, animals are more likely to get sick if they get cramped together in extremely tight spaces, facilitating the spread of diseases, and meat industries do systematically cramp animals together because it's economically efficient, at the detriment of both the animals and the quality of the meat.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

SuddenDownpour ,

Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information

Don't use it??????

AI has no means to check the heaps of garbage data is has been fed against reality, so even if someone were to somehow code one to be capable of deep, complex epistemological analysis (at which point it would already be something far different from what the media currently calls AI), as long as there's enough flat out wrong stuff in its data there's a growing chance of it screwing it up.

SuddenDownpour ,

Civilized countries make this shit illegal.

SuddenDownpour ,

There's a very large difference between something being illegal and the crime being enforced, but legally recognizing that it's illegal goes a long way, even if only because people radicalize easily when they see the boss/company owner blatantly committing crimes.

SuddenDownpour ,

Home Owner Associations are a US thing, I think.

SuddenDownpour ,

AI and its consequences have been a disaster for Google.

SuddenDownpour ,

The first picture shows Fall, the second shows Guy.

SuddenDownpour ,

It happened in the UK with Labour (unfortunately in the opposite direction)

This happened after Labour's entrenched power groups vigorously sabotaged Corbyn. Corbyn committed a somewhat serious blunder during Brexit, but he still had Labour well in the direction of defeating the Tories, and that might have happened earlier if his most spiteful opponents hadn't been inside his own party.

SuddenDownpour ,

Ah, so this was the perfidious trans agenda. Ensuring the continued existence of the monarchy. Disgusting. /s

SuddenDownpour ,

She isn't white in the picture above? Also, the one at the bottom isn't white, she's Anime-American.

SuddenDownpour ,

I'm seriously on the fence with this one. A couple of points make it really difficult for it to not to be satire, but I've met guys who would unironically think of "can think for herself" as a malus - but they wouldn't admit it out loud. Now, can there be some kind of cave creature so pulled apart from civilized life that they would think this and post it?

SuddenDownpour ,

We should accept that there's both people for whom sex work is just like any other job, and people for whom it implies renouncing to an element of privacy they'd rather to share only with their partner/s. Should it be legalized? By criminalizing it you're screwing over a lot of people who do want to perform that work and don't provoke any issues in the world, but legalizing it might have ramifications that are horrendous.

For instance, say your country has an unemployment system where you'd lose your unemployment benefits if you receive a job offer and reject it, and immediately after getting fired you receive an offer to work at a brothel. That's great if, for you, there's no emotional element attached to sex, but for a lot of people that would be a nightmare, especially if they need either a job or the unemployment benefits.

So, my take: decriminalize sex work but don't regulate it yet. Once we have either socialism or UBI or both, and no one gets under risk of suffering personal misery for not having a job for a while, legalize it like all other jobs.

SuddenDownpour ,

Depends on the country's legislation. Conservatives parties often tend to make these regulations such that it's easier to terminate your benefits with a more ample range of job offers.

SuddenDownpour ,

This post got banned from !memes for reason “Troll Posting” which is Very Disrespectful in my opinion. 😕

I find it really disrespectful as well since it was one of the most productive and well tempered OPs on this whole drama arc, at least on Lemmy.

SuddenDownpour ,

The comments you linked to are now removed, I think. It might be useful to have archive.org or archive.is archive them next time.

SuddenDownpour ,

If you live there, either you're antigua (meaning ancient woman) or you're barbuda (meaning woman with a beard). There's just no winning.

SuddenDownpour ,

Many years ago, I called out people at some subreddit for immediately associating someone not being able to find a partner with being a terrible person, almost like they inherently had little value as a human being and deserved to be alone, etc. I initially got a lot of support, until a couple of people started to attack my comments in that thread viciously, making shit up, bringing assumptions out of nowhere, and the both of them were usual posters of r/FemaleDatingStrategy. I gave a look to c/femcelmemes a couple of weeks ago, and the vibes were NOTHING ALIKE. Internet just generally sucks at naming things.

SuddenDownpour ,

Find me two twinks that look breedable and submissive.

SuddenDownpour ,

Finally, someone who defends the dark side.

SuddenDownpour ,

The one debate I had in high school was whether or not humans should incorporate artificial (bionic) parts into their bodies. I had to argue against so much stupid bullshit that I lost plenty of respect for most of them - I do not even want to imagine how I would have felt if the matter of debate had been whether or not I should have equal rights. The following day everyone agreed that I won the debate though.

SuddenDownpour ,

I believe a woman is a human being who belongs to the sex class that produces large gametes.

TIL my grandma isn't a woman anymore.

SuddenDownpour ,

However, this was weakened by the flexible gender system of traditional Igbo culture and language. As Ifi explained, a major component of this gender framework was that “male roles were open to certain categories of women through such practices as “nhanye”- “male daughters” and “igba ohu” – “female husbands”

What, you're telling me that boywives were real all along!?

SuddenDownpour ,

I'm pretty sure the leftcommunists and anarchists and worker councils requesting for power to be really handed to the soviets which were purged by Lenin and Trotsky weren't actually landlords. But you never know, people from .ml may think people unwilling to obey the bolsheviks get labeled landlords too.

SuddenDownpour ,

I don't think the Mensheviks were the good guys either. Mensheviks would allow a way out for the old elites to remain elites if they kept on with the times (from aristocracy to bourgeoisie), the Bolsheviks just laid the way out for new elites (party apparatus) by choosing not to empower the working class. The leninist model followed somewhat similar structures everwhere from Hungary to Vietnam, and they always ended the same way: with the party elites opening the way to privatization after one or two generational changes and the heirs of the new system realizing that they'd get more material privilege by establishing capitalism, and without an organized, conscious working class capable of stop them.

Do also take a look at this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1917_Russian_Constituent_Assembly_election

And this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Revolutionary_Party

Selected quotes:

The SRs were agrarian socialists and supporters of a democratic socialist Russian republic. The ideological heirs of the Narodniks, the SRs won a mass following among the Russian peasantry by endorsing the overthrow of the Tsar and the redistribution of land to the peasants.

In the election to the Russian Constituent Assembly held two weeks after the Bolsheviks took power, the party still proved to be by far the most popular party across the country, gaining 37.6% of the popular vote as opposed to the Bolsheviks' 24%. However, the Bolsheviks disbanded the Assembly in January 1918 and after that the SR lost political significance. (...) Both wings of the SR party were ultimately suppressed by the Bolsheviks through imprisoning some of its leaders and forcing others to emigrate.

Following Lenin's instructions, a trial of SRs was held in Moscow in 1922, which led to protests by Eugene V. Debs, Karl Kautsky, and Albert Einstein among others. Most of the defendants were found guilty, but they did not plead guilty like the defendants in the later show trials in the Soviet Union in the late 1920s and the 1930s.

Note that these guys won the elections because they were the actually existing socialist movement in Russia and had been for decades. Lenin only led the government instead of them because he had the organization to overthrow the Mensheviks, not because the Bolsheviks were a better representative of socialism.

SuddenDownpour ,

How about you read anything of what I've sent you and you realize that I'm not talking about the Mensheviks

SuddenDownpour ,

I can understand the post before you leave rule, but isn't it a bit strange that we have to DM feet pics to the mods?

Since I have no horse in this race, I can proudly say that both American English and English English are wrong. The English language as a whole is wrong. Thank you, I'll come back later to impart more wisdom.

"These are our ANCIENT TRADITIONS"

Yeah sure they are buddy, people in this town were totally exploding fireworks 300 years ago at 4AM. Is being a drunkard your family tradition too?

SuddenDownpour ,

I'm pretty sure people everywhere want "freedom to" have a house, buy groceries and receive good healthcare, which are the most practical forms of positive freedoms in politics.

SuddenDownpour ,

I don't disagree, my point is that people in this thread have got positive and negative freedoms and rights mixed up

SuddenDownpour ,

I'm getting y'all collared, because none of you is going to take charge otherwise. Come on, we're going for walkies.
