Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

How does this compare to other music streaming services these days?

“We want to ensure that people have maximum control to the extent that it doesn’t violate the law or other peoples’ rights,” Joanne Jang, a member of the product team at OpenAI, told NPR. “There are creative cases in which content involving sexuality or nudity is important to our users.”

The other problem in my mind is the fallibility of current safeguards. OpenAI and rivals have been refining their filtering and moderation tools for years. But users constantly discover workarounds that enable them to abuse the companies’ AI models, apps and platforms.

Some highlights from the article.

It seems like AI porn is inevitable and OpenAI has safeguards in mind for exploitative content so it doesn't seem like a horrendous idea.

To find very specific content?

@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Am I the only one who finds this so weird when we talk about LLMs? If someone makes a bot that resembles some specific person, that person’s rights aren’t really violated, and since they’re all fictional content, it is very hard to break actual laws through its content. At that point we would have to also ban people’s weird fan fiction, no?

Not arguing about whatever they want or don’t want on their platform, but the legal & alleged moral questions / arguments always weird me out a bit, because there’s no one actually getting hurt in any sort of way by weirdos having weird chats with computers.

I could see some people making the argument that it could be considered defamatory especially in cases where it is being peddled as real. Politicians might even try to link it in with revenge porn or other non-consensual pornography laws.

It would sure get messy in a hurry though. Imagine someone trying to make lewd photos of Tomb Raider's Laura Croft for example and accidentally generates images resembling Alicia Vikander or Angelina Jolie from the Tomb Raider movie.

I recall some people using Akinator to find pornstars they might be interested so you might be onto something.

I feel like it's going to be a challenge to find a definition of malicious most people agree on.

Someone might think it's fine to make nudes of Captain Marvel for example because she's a character. They don't really care about the Brie Larson aspect.

I suppose there is the option to eliminate any kind of name based suggestions.

Another catalyst is one company buying another. I cannot think of one example where the acquired company’s product/services got better after a M and A.

I feel like there have been some positive outcomes of mergers and acquisitions but I am having trouble thinking of them. What comes to my mind is Meta acquiring Oculus, Activision merging with Blizzard, and Microsoft acquiring Minecraft. All of those have led to a shitty Russian nesting doll of launchers and DRM.

The positives might be harder to note though. There must have been a couple times where some kind of acquisition has brought a series into the mainstream.

I know a lot of people prefer the classic Fallout games but I do wonder how people would be aware of the series if it weren't for Bethesda buying the right to Fallout for example.

I don't think it's required by law for a publicly traded company to increase profits. I think that's a side effect of shareholders voting.

If Microsoft held a vote on whether or not disclose a report covering diversity I feel like the board would recommend against it and a majority of voters would agree because it could mean decreasing their stock's value.

There is a thing called ethical investing but that can mean investing in stocks that will see lower gains.

All-in-all I feel like it depends a lot on the core of the company and what percentage of the company belongs to different people.

To be clear: I am not a professional and am drunk. This is just my two cents on the topic.

I'm not sure. Portal and Team Fortress both have really interesting back stories that I think have a bit to do with Valve acquisitions

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

You might be interested in Portal on the N64 while you're at it.

I'd check out Narbacular Drop. Pretty sure that's the game that I'm talking about that became Portal, in a way, later.

There was a good YouTube video about it a while ago but I think it had a clickbait title that makes it hard to find.

Part of this process will involve porting apps to HarmonyOS and encouraging other app developers to code for the platform.

"In the China market, Huawei smartphone users spend 99 percent of their time on about 5,000 apps. So we decided to spend 2024 porting these apps over to HarmonyOS first in our drive to truly unify the OS and the app ecosystem. We are also encouraging other apps to be ported over to HarmonyOS," Xu said.

According to Huawei's rotating chairman, more than 4,000 of those apps are already in the process of being transferred, and the company is "communicating with developers" on the 1,000 or so apps that remain.

I haven't looked into HarmonyOS before but is the plan to work off of a compatibility layer like Wine or Anbox?

I have no idea how detached it is from Android or how willing companies are to embrace it.

Reddit Is Taking Over Google (tech.slashdot.org)

Reddit, Quora, and other internet forums that have climbed up through the traditional set of Google links. Data analysis from Semrush, which predicts traffic based on search ranking, shows that traffic to Reddit has climbed at an impressive clip since August 2023. Semrush estimated that Reddit had over 132 million visitors in...

It makes sense. Adding Reddit to my online searches has been my "life hack" for years now. If only Reddit wasn't becoming annoying as fuck with things like their new UI, blocking third party apps, and finally blocking off VPN users.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

That's a good question. I wonder if there are available user numbers for them.

I imagine it's regional and depends on what communities you are in. SimpleX chat seems pretty popular these days in privacy circles but I could see something like Briar being useful if traditional networks weren't reliably available for example.

    This is similar to the Can Android phones be considered Linux phones? debate. At some point you've walled off and pigeonholed the device or OS enough it becomes something else entirely.

    CorrodedCranium ,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    Is GrapheneOS that much more like Linux?

    I feel like what you are saying is on the same level as installing Termux on a rooted Android phone. There might be some quirks of GrapheneOS I am unaware of though.

    CorrodedCranium ,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    Would you feel the same way about a Linux computer that was limited to Snap packages?

    CorrodedCranium ,

    Are you really running Gentoo if you haven't put your computer in a fridge?

    CorrodedCranium ,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    I don't think it's really relevant then. The argument is more about wanting a traditional Linux experience on mobile phones and Android operating systems (including GrapheneOS) being too far removed from that. Breaking away from Google is more of a possible positive byproduct

    You could also use Windows Subsystem for Linux.

    I don't think the Chromebook aspect of it matters; it's just another piece of hardware.

    CorrodedCranium ,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    Doesn't MacOS have more in common with BSD than Linux?

    CorrodedCranium ,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    Oof I hadn't thought of that. I was more thinking of general use applications like Firefox, Transmission, and Steam.

    CorrodedCranium ,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    Other people have mentioned the limitations of the hardware so I won't bother rehashing it but I do think there is a lot of potential in a Linux distro for phones.

    Right now Linux phones are incredibly niche but we have seen some improvements in software around the release of the PinePhone and the Pro model so I have hope that it will, eventually, work. SailfishOS is a paid OS and is a fairly limited but it does feel quite smooth to daily drive on supported devices. Simple frequent tasks (ex. Finding public transit routes to a coffee shop) do seem to take longer to complete on Linux phones but I am hoping that will be sorted in the next couple years.

    As others have pointed out it's going to vary from service to service. It's like how some VPNs aren't blocked by Netflix.
