The WWDC keynote isn't an investors meeting, it's for Apple to talk about their exciting new features that are coming and to prepare developers for what their sessions are going to be about. The announcement was made with little fanfare because it was like a "FYI, your communication with Android devices will be slightly better for them now"

Cqrd ,

??? The keynote is immediately followed by sessions covering the APIs mostly for the features they just announced. It absolutely is for the developers as much as it is for the press and regular users to learn about what's coming.

Cqrd ,

Supposedly they're not allowed to use any data obtained from this for training purposes, at least according to the mkbhd video

Do you think people would be okay with 'Recall' if Apple did it?

With the recent WWDC apple made some bold claims about privacy when it comes to so called Apple Intelligence. This makes me wonder if they did something to what Microsoft did with Recall feature, would people be less concerned and to an extend praise their effort?...

Cqrd ,

One records your every moment and was instantly exploited to get every piece of data you ever saw and the other does things when you ask it too and asks you before sending data off device. These are clearly exactly the same thing.

Cqrd ,

iCloud is a data backup system, it has nothing to do with the topic at hand

Cqrd ,

It's marketing bullshit, in announcement they also said they used "heat signatures" from the photo to help determine if the person was trans lol

Best Local Smart Lock for Privacy/Security

I’m solidly leaning towards a Schlage Connect Lock due to its local only Zwave capabilities (which has the benefit of also extending battery life). I was strongly considering the Aqara U100 for its many features, but based on what I’ve seen I can foresee it being a nightmare to get working locally with home assistant and the...

Cqrd ,

Picking a lock is a lot more likely than somebody finding an exploit and hacking your lock. In either case, locks are minimal theft deterrent, not prevention.

Cqrd ,

So can nearly all physical locks you'll find on a house door. The ones nearly everyone puts on their doors are super simple. Most thieves won't bother though, if your lock poses even the slightest challenge they'll go through a window if they really want in.

Elon Musk says it's his turn to have the remote (www.engadget.com)

[Xitter] just announced a smart TV app for streaming video. Or, more accurately, that it claims it's building one, with absolutely no launch date mentioned. The appropriately-named [Xitter] TV wants to be “your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.”

Cqrd ,

He's blatantly stated as much before. He wants Twitter to be the everything app, the WeChat of the US

Cqrd ,

Good luck getting a lot of people with a absolute shit ton of spare bandwidth

Cqrd ,

The base of it is, but you're not buying a phone with a fully open source Android OS on it

Cqrd ,

Because China is trying to influence the US and they need to be in the US market for that

Cqrd ,

Look at any security analysis done on it and you'll see the insane amount of information it collects from every single user is absolutely stunning. They definitely use their influence and knowledge of individuals to drive opinion of those who use their platform.

Cqrd ,

That doesn't feel like a fair comparison. For the same level of setup you can get with Alexa and Google, I feel like it's the same level of difficulty. If you want complex automations, sure you can yaml, but you'll be doing things you couldn't with Alexa or Google.

This is assuming you're starting with a yellow kit or something already set up and yeah, it's basically just as easy.

Cqrd ,

They actually did get certified by an authority

Cqrd ,

Read the dammed article, it literally said the DMV for California and Nevada. It's the fucking government.

Cqrd ,

In 2042 you'll be 62ish or something I don't wanna think about math, but that's around the average American life expectancy and isn't too bad.

Cqrd ,

Yeah, I thought it was closer to 70, but I guess it's around 77 as of 2022, so I was a lot more off than I expected

Cqrd ,

Yeah, I thought it was closer to 70, but apparently it's 77 as of 2022

Cqrd ,

You should learn about how message federation works on Lemmy

Cqrd ,

Since they're all so far away and so many different distances away, it would imply something very very very large and very very very fast passed between us and the closest stars. Probably aliens. That would be cool

Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores (gizmodo.com)

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

Cqrd , (edited )

The Amazon's Mechanical Turk was never a con. It's been known for a very long time that it's a way to outsource human tasks on a large scale cheaply. Like, a very long time. I think I first heard about it like 12 years ago?

Unless you mean the way it exploits poor countries for cheap labor. I wouldn't call that a con, but it is fucked.

Cqrd ,

Yep, thanks

Cqrd ,

You might check the dbzer0 instance and if it's not there, you could create it there. It's pretty sailor friendly.

Cqrd ,

I checked the original post text 3 separate times because I was so convinced Elon Musk wrote it. It sounds like this dude is Elon Musk on an alt account, it's so eerily similar to how he talks about technology.

Cqrd ,

Somebody actually made a comic book with AI images and the copyright got rejected on the art (held up on the words though). So maybe if you modify the images quite a bit, but not if you just put them in comic book form.

Cqrd ,

Jetbrains moved away from the purchase version model and to an actual monthly/yearly subscription model a very long time ago. I don't even think you can buy their products anymore, they're literally subscription models, no longer buy versions then get updates for a year sort of thing. You either pay them and have access or don't and lose it.

Cqrd ,

Huh, I did not know that. Wild.

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

Cqrd ,

Imagine owning a laptop that's too bulky to be comfortable anywhere but a desk

Cqrd ,

And you also can't usually replace their ram or SSD. Wild how I didn't even mention Apple in my comment but apparently that's the only laptop you think is light that you can't replace the ram and SSD in.

Cqrd ,

I bet it also cost significantly more than a MacBook Air too, but my comment wasn't even in defense of Apple. It was a general statement until this point.

Cqrd ,

Go fuck yourself with that shit. There's plenty of laptops that aren't bulky and aren't Apple products, but not that many that aren't bulky, aren't Apple products, have self-replaceable parts, and are affordable.

Cqrd ,

Btw if you have Apple Maps, it's decently easy to submit an address correction, they usually update with corrections within a week or so. Google maps is also easy enough, but they seem to take a bit longer to correct.

This is really useful to know if you buy a new build house.

Cqrd ,

SpaceX isn't public, this is an internal stock system used for employee rewards. Like bonuses, but kinda more arbitrary and more gambly

Cqrd ,

lol I started DDoSing this losers IP address, good op sec dumba

Cqrd ,

That's why they started with the one they did

Cqrd ,

You can buy a WiFi module and just plug it in as HAT, but I still think it's stupid to even mention when you can use pretty much anything with WiFi that you control. You could probably do the same thing with a rooted Android phone if you wanted.

Cqrd ,

This is very typical looking for groceries in the US

Cqrd ,

Had to get to the very end to see you were talking about tortillas

Cqrd ,

This is a joke referencing Nintendo suing an emulator developer. It should not be considered news. The money amount is even the same.

Cqrd ,

It is, but this one is a reference to Yuzu, you can tell by the money. Previously it was $200 million, where as Yuzu settled for $2.5m

Cqrd ,

300 euros, not dollars. This also means the America jokes aren't quite right in this case. 300 euros is about $326

Cqrd ,

I can tell the person who asked this is short, short people seem to be used to this and don't feel uncomfortable like that. At least, according to my wife. I always feel very uncomfortable if my feet can't be on the ground.

They had to lock down the production of this animated movie because bronies are seriously motivated and a group full of actual hackers who would go way out of their way to get early access to the film.

    Cqrd ,

I always wondered why it was required to accept any interference received. Just so the government can fuck with your shit if they want?
