I won’t hold my breath on Apple using this. It’d destroy their upsell from 8gb process in one fell swoop.

DJDarren ,

The trouble with YT Premium is how much they’re charging for it.

We used a VPN to get Ukrainian family YTP for a fraction of the price they charge here in the UK. We pay something like £4 a month now for both of our accounts. That would be the better part of £20 a month if we’d done it legit. Fuck that noise.

Sure, it comes with YT Music, but I’ve literally never used that. I have Apple Music and an iPod. So £20 a month JUST TO REMOVE ADS.

Nah, fuck ‘em.

DJDarren ,

What's the best free alternative to VMWare Fusion?

I don't need Windows a huge amount, but it's useful to have it in a VM on my Macs for those odd occasions when I need the Windows version of Excel for work stuff.

DJDarren ,

I’ve given UTM a go, and it looks really promising for the kind of things I need it to do. Thanks!

DJDarren ,

Yeah, and they’ve done a shitty job of it too. Downloaded it out of interest and ran Super Mario Land. It looks like crap and it’s full of ads that you can’t pay to remove.

Also, while it shows up when I search, it’s not in my App Library at all, which is odd.

DJDarren ,

DJDarren ,

I have an M2 Air which can run the Windows version of Steam via Whisky. Its ability can be patchy, but the fact it runs any games at all is little short of a miracle. I’ve been playing The Talos Principle II that way, and while my wife thinks the glitchy graphics are hilarious, I’m not too fussed because the gameplay is still there.

Of course, it’s not perfect, and while I can get Fallout 4 to run, it looks like shit even on the lowest settings. However, in the context of the gripes in this thread, it means I can play Portal 2 and its various mod packs on my Mac. And they look great.

DJDarren ,

Yeah, that’s awesome.

Now, let’s see about Red Dead II…

Apple to allow iOS app downloads direct from websites in the EU (with restrictions), in compliance with the Digital Markets Act (www.pcmag.com)

Developers interested in distributing iOS apps on their websites also have to cross a high bar. This includes being registered or incorporated in the EU, being a member of “good standing in the Apple Developer Program for two continuous years or more,” and having an app that received “more than one million first annual...

Speaking as a macOS user, it's a relatively straightforward process using a specific version of the Kindle app and a bit of knowledge of how to use Calibre. It can be a bit of a fiddle to set up, but once it is it's wonderful to be able to take advantage of discounts on Kindle while reading on my Kobo.

I can't speak for how easy it is on Windows/Linux, mind.

DJDarren ,

Being something of a Linux novice, I tried having a go with Asahi on my M2 MacBook Air a few weeks back. After a couple of days of struggling to figure out why I couldn’t install a number of different extensions, it gradually began to dawn on me that Linux on ARM is essentially non-existent right now.

So yeah, I’m all for this speeding up development of that sort of thing, because as it stands it’s so very close to being daily usable.

DJDarren ,

Out of interest, what can’t you do with macOS that you can with Windows?

I use a Mac at work - and am the only Mac user in the company. The only reason I keep a Windows VM is because there’s some annoying compatibility issues with Excel when linking to documents on our shared drive, so if I’m doing that, I’ll do it in Windows for the benefit of the others.

To be fair, we don’t use any proprietary software, or anything like that, but for general day to day office work, my Mac is 100% capable.

DJDarren ,

Ah yeah, that’s a fair point.

Like I said, I’m a Linux novice. I jumped from Windows XP to OS X 10.4 back in ‘07 and have only used Macs since. But as much as I appreciate how good Apple’s hardware is, by the time my M2 Air has lost OS support I’ll be very, very keen indeed to be using something other than macOS.

And yes, I meant no shade at all to the folks behind Asahi. What they’ve managed to do so far is nothing short of astonishing. It’s just not quite at daily driver level for people who don’t really know what they’re doing. Not that they advertise it as such, of course.

DJDarren ,

For wanking; it still has Safari, and Pornhub still exists 👍🏽

DJDarren ,

It’s entirely possible - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrg7nPG6_UU&t=993s&pp=ygUIZG9zZHVkZTE%3D

But yeah, not currently practical.

I’m hoping that by the time my M2 Air is no longer supported, OpenCore will have cracked the M-series Macs. Failing that, Asahi ought to be damn near feature complete.

DJDarren ,

As far as I can tell, no.

However, I installed it on my M2 Air last weekend to give it a spin, decided it’s not ready enough for a Linux novice such as myself, and uninstalled it all pretty easily. It doesn’t mess with your macOS install at all. The only thing you need to be careful with is deleting the correct partitions.

I installed three times. The first, I didn’t give Asahi enough drive space to be all that useful. The second time I decided that I wanted to try KDE instead of Gnome. Those two uninstalls went without a hitch.

The third uninstall, however, I must have been careless, because I had to reinstall macOS through deleting a wrong partition. It wasn’t a huge issue for me, but it’s possible to do.

Mr Macintosh’ video on uninstalling it is spot on - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMnWTq2H-N0&

DJDarren ,

That’s one way to view it.

On the other hand, it’s a first product in a new line for Apple who have an idealised notion of what they want it to achieve, but realise the technological limitations that exist before significant R&D is carried out. The first gen of any tech sucks in comparison to what comes later.

DJDarren ,

You could argue that the 5th gen iPod Classic was when it really hit its stride.

Sure, it had been wildly successful until that point, but I have a 4th gen, and as beautiful as it is, it sucks next to my 5th gen. The refresh rate on the screen is atrocious, and it refuses to charge via USB. Meanwhile my 5G has a lovely colour screen and works with USB without a trouble.

DJDarren ,

Yeah, it’s weird because I distinctly remember them touting it as a dev kit at the launch event last year, yet there’s nothing at all about that on the website now.

DJDarren ,

I’m a Mac user. I like using Macs, and I like using macOS. Apple are just as bad as MS for this shit.

I have an old MacBook Pro, as well as a pair of older minis. All three were left behind by macOS a few years ago, but if they weren’t all running Sonoma through OpenCore, they’d have an update in the App Store to upgrade to a new OS that Apple won’t let them run.

Boeing Finds More Misdrilled Holes on 737 in Latest Setback::(Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co. found more mistakes with holes drilled in the fuselage of its 737 Max jet, a setback that could further slow deliveries on a critical program already restricted by regulators over quality lapses. Have Boeing considered simply not fucking up the building of their main product?

DJDarren ,

Oh shit, yeah, that’s true. Didn’t think of that ‘cause I’m just a regular guy without a business degree.

DJDarren ,

I suppose a weapon is something that falls from the sky causing death. So yeah.

How many of those subscribers are like me, definitely watching YouTube from Argentina.

DJDarren ,

Nope. The only thing different is that I don’t pay for it in £.

DJDarren ,

You can change that in the settings. It’s been that way since the remote with the touch pad. It can either go to ATV+ or Home. One of the first things I do with a new ATV is change it.

Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not (www.theverge.com)

Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not::There’s a lot of pressure on the new Apple Vision Pro headset, which starts at $3,499 and marks the beginning of something called “spatial computing.” The ambition is enormous, but the Vision Pro also represents a series of really big tradeoffs.

DJDarren ,

I’m a huge tech nerd, but even I’m struggling to see the genuine use-case for VR.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be overjoyed to be proven wrong, for someone to come out with a killer app and for VR to suddenly become essential, but right now it just feels like a way to get people to spend significant amounts of money paying for tech firms to do r&d. At most, I love the idea of having an enormous personal screen for movie watching, but I watch movies with my wife, so we’d have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to sit next to each other in our personal bubbles.

DJDarren ,

I have an iPad mini that was given to me as a gift last year. It's a lovely little device, it really is. But I don't know why it exists at this point. I mean, it's cool for reading pdfs, browsing the internet on something bigger than my iPhone, but I'd say 90% of what I use it for is as another screen for my work Mac. It's cool n'all, but it sure as shit ain't £750 of cool.

DJDarren ,

I used FF on my phone for a while, back when my old MacBook was stuck on a version of macOS that didn't offer iCloud syncing. Firefox on both devices worked perfectly, but I always slightly preferred to use Safari wherever possible.

These days I keep FF on my Mac for if ever I need a second browser, and it's the first thing I install if I ever need to setup a Windows VM.

DJDarren ,

I love my MacBook, my iPad is a lovely bit of tech, my iPhone is perfect for my needs, and my Apple TV shits all over any and all “smart” TV setups I’ve used.

Apple as a company though, are absolute shit. But they really do make good stuff.

DJDarren ,

And yet, here we are.

I have a 15" MacBook Air that's easily the most beautiful, most powerful computer I've ever owned, running an operating system that works incredibly well for me, an OS that syncs damn near perfectly with my phone and iPad. I have a 2011 MacBook that's running the last version of macOS even though it officially lost support a fair few years ago. It's still absolutely solid for a 13 year old laptop.

They make incredible stuff.

But they have very, very shitty consumer practices.

DJDarren ,

Yeah, Opencore is the gold standard for patching new macOS onto unsupported hardware. In fact, I'm not sure there are really any other ways now.

I can't speak for how Sonoma runs on a 2011 MacBook, but I have Ventura on mine and it runs just fine. It's not going to set the world alight with its benchmarks, but it's still a perfectly usable laptop. Does yours have an SSD and maxed out RAM? Because those two will help enormously.

DJDarren ,

Pretty sure that machine can take 16gb, to make it extra useful.

Opencore is surprisingly easy to setup. The instructions aren't massively clear, but all you'll really need is a 16gb+ memory stick and a bit of patience. Install Opencore to the Mac's SSD, then download whichever OS you want using the option in Opencore, which will then automatically make the installer.

DJDarren ,

OF COURSE this doesn’t apply to the UK, giving me yet another reason to wish kidney stones upon the architects of Brexit.

DJDarren ,

“So there’s this family of Tories, right, and they walk into a theatre…”

DJDarren ,

The fuck would I want to actively give all that data to Google for?

Also, I’ve blagged a couple of fairly old Samsung tablets to use at work, and they’re absolute shit to set up when compared to an iPad. There’s all the stock Google apps, and all the stock Samsung apps that offer the same fucking features, and they keep bugging you to set them up.

Nah mate, fuck using Android. All power to those who do, but it’s not my bag.

DJDarren ,

I have been looking at alternatives to Android, but the range of hardware that supports it is currently fairly limited.

DJDarren ,

A say “sad” because you could call me a “Google-hater” but never in my life have I wasted time shitting on everything anti consumer thing they do.

I use Apple products, think they're a shitty company, but who offer the best products in a world of shitty companies. And as someone who's used Macs since 2007, I've noticed time and time again how people will shit on me and my choice of computer while I never shit on theirs in return.

Do I bitch about Windows on the occasions I have to use it? Yes, of course, because it's fucking terrible/ not what I'm used to, but I appreciate that some people are happy to use it, or have to for whatever reason. My criticism of the OS isn't a personal attack on anyone who uses it.

But yeah, my choice of computer is a personal failing, apparently.

🤷🏻

DJDarren ,

Disappointed to see very little in the way of actual discussion, and just a load of shitposting.

But to be fair, this is almost certainly bollocks. It was bollocks when it was first floated a decade ago, and it remains so. As much as the oft-rumoured Apple TV set was.

At best, Apple are expanding what they offer in-car, which, y’know, they’re already doing anyway.

Why would Apple want to get the car building market? It makes no sense at all.

DJDarren ,

The other reply has covered what Apple TV is, but for context; some 15 years ago there were regular reports that Apple were about to release their own TV set.

At a glance, this isn’t too dumb; they already had a standalone monitor, and the difference between an iMac and an LCD TV isn’t huge. But give it more than a moment’s thought and you realise that it’s complete bollocks. People replace computers semi regularly because more powerful ones come along. How often do you replace your TV?

DJDarren ,

I have 16gb on my M2 Air, and 8gb on my 2014 mini. I’m genuinely surprised at how usable that mini still is. Hell, it’s running Sonoma through OCLP, but it’s only when I boot up the Win11 VM I have installed that it really starts to struggle.

DJDarren ,

I upgraded my iPhone XR to a 13 mini last year. I was close to choosing something running Android, but ultimately I just don't want to jump that far in with Google. And really, there's not much of an alternative out there.

DJDarren ,

we don’t have per-message charges in the US, so most people continue on using SMS for daily conversations.

We don't here in the UK either, but we still use data messaging for the most part. I use WhatsApp for my Android friends, iMessage for my iPhone friends, and it's never a problem.

DJDarren ,

Oh aye, back in the day we had a text allowance. My first contract allowed me 50 SMS per day, which felt like a lot until you actually started using them. But I’ve had functionally limitless - or actually limitless - SMS for probably twenty years at this point.

I’m lucky if I send five a month, and most of those were intended to be iMessages that failed for whatever reason.
