DingoBilly ,

So Tesla's entire strategy Elon was working was just abandoned.

Continues down the pathway that Tesla is just going to fade to irrelevance.

DingoBilly ,

This is just a meme but a pretty stupid world view generally.

DingoBilly ,

Police can be corrupt and have issues, but a world without them would be fucked.

People act like it's just as simple as removing police and the world would be amazing, but that's the naive world view imo. You need to actually go through some shit to realize how important they are even if imperfect.

DingoBilly ,

Welcome to the world of business. First time here huh? Might wanna strap in, this is pretty harmless when it comes to capitalists and its by-products.

DingoBilly ,

It's probably far more common than most people realize. Open source software doesn't automatically make it secure, and in many cases can be less secure than closed source as it's just one or two people doing it for free.

Much easier to be tempted to do something wrong or to get others to help in and take the weight off.

DingoBilly ,

And someone recently told me the Xz exploit doesn't matter because no developer is stupid enough to install beta releases to prod systems lol.

Laziness and/or low skills leads to a lot of IT failures.

DingoBilly ,

There's plenty of products without subscriptions... Including your doorbell example.

Maybe you haven't actually researched this enough?

DingoBilly ,

"What do you mean everyone is equal and I can't just pay to get ahead? This game sucks, nothing like real life"

DingoBilly ,

Immediately noticed even though the packages have been out for over a month?

Easily could have stolen a ton of information in that month.

DingoBilly ,

Yeah they got lucky. But shows how susceptible systems are. Really makes you wonder how many systems are infected with similar - this wouldn't be the first back door that's live in Linux systems.

DingoBilly ,

Phew, thankfully everyone follows appropriate procedures and doesn't just roll out beta updates to production in their systems.

Right?

DingoBilly ,

Gmail is still good for me at least. Does everything I want, doesn't need new features and I don't see ads or anything.

What more would I get from someone else? I'm not going to pay for privacy at end of day.

DingoBilly ,

No I wouldn't pay for the services of someone else when I can get it for free.

I'd pirate it if I could though?

DingoBilly ,

The real question is why the fuck is this guy passing for two password managers if not more, especially if he isn't even using one?

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

DingoBilly ,

So many dumb Americans here not voting. Cutting off your legs so you can hold the moral high ground. Moronic.

DingoBilly ,

Why is the onus on the left to vote left to promote left values? Because that's how voting works?

I'm not sure how to answer that question. Reword it as "Why is the onus on the right to elect a right-wing candidate?" maybe to see.

DingoBilly ,

Sure. But it's a two way street. Climate change is important but you don't realistically solve it by stopping everything coal powered tomorrow. You have to gradually introduce it.

I don't know if it's a younger generation thing, but they're not patient and demand change now when it's just not realistic. Change is glacially slow. Voting in something that's not ideal is better than voting in something completely opposite.

The more you allow that left or moderate side to win, the more the axis changes towards it, which is still a win if you're left/moderate as it moves it away from the right. It's this last bit some people don't understand.

DingoBilly ,

That's impossible though.

You have them everywhere including on Lemmy.

DingoBilly ,

Just because you are not aware doesn't mean they don't exist.

Reading into blahaj.zoje more, plenty of queer folk are friendly and supportive, but plenty are also pieces of shit. Sometimes you may also not realize if you create an echo chamber what is acceptable and what bleeds into extremist rhetoric.

DingoBilly ,

We all want them absent. But then it sort of defeats the point of OPs post saying that BlueSky is filled with bigots when the reality is everywhere has them.

DingoBilly ,

I get wanting a safe space from persecution.

But echo chambers are dangerous and can really distort your reality. I personally find going from a safe space/echo chamber to reality very jarring and much more conflicting than from a relatively safe space with some conflict to reality.

By shutting it all out I'd argue you are risking hurting yourself unless you can guarantee a safe space in every aspect of life which is very difficult.

DingoBilly ,

Hahahahaha.

In 5 years time they'll whittle the pledges down a bit.

In 10 they'll remove it altogether.

DingoBilly ,

He was very much the Elon Musk of his times, and it's very possible he would have gone down the same route of extremist views and decisions that completely failed because of his egoism.

DingoBilly ,

Yep. He was the Elon Musk of those years. Great at marketing but an asshole to work for and likely would have started spreading his insane crap at some point to the masses.

DingoBilly ,

Yeah this seems like a complete non-issue... All software has its problems and annoyances. Whether it's Linux, MacOS or Windows they all have different levels of shit and annoying things you have to do.

DingoBilly ,

Depends on the person and their usage. For many Windows is the most appropriate.

Dont be a blind fanboy and just say that there is only solution for an OS and that's Linux. If there's one OS then it will inevitably get shit itself.

DingoBilly ,

Your point is "Windows is the worst of the bunch".

It's pretty basic/has no value... Doesn't take a rocket scientist to disprove.

DingoBilly ,

I use Windows, and I honestly never see this stuff at all.

Haven't used Linux/MacOS in a long time now but from this specific perspective they all appear the same to me. Or at worst, it's easy to disable.

DingoBilly ,

Some interesting points, and some things I disagree with.

Firstly it's annoying he keeps calling it his idea and trying to enforce this concept that the current internet needs to align with his original goals. That's stupid and ignores that things will go where they go, he can't control them.

So his first point about centralisation being an issue isn't that big a grievance. But his second point rings true - the issues around our data and advertising have grown significantly and the Web is getting much worse as a result.

I actually think the solution is just government needs to step in and regulate it, along the lines of what the EU is doing. Realistically I think that's the only solution that'll help. Doing some grassroots movement and hoping it picks up steam is just unrealistic. Like looking at Lemmy and Mastadon - they're great but at this pace they'll never take over the other giants in the space. You need someone to step in and force the change.

DingoBilly ,

Yikes. You don't have to defend Apple in public my man, they have lawyers for that.

DingoBilly ,

Good! It's a massive story.

DingoBilly ,

Tell me you're an apple fanboy without telling me you're an apple fanboy.

DingoBilly ,

Why would I donate?

DingoBilly ,

It's an ok experience. Realistically Reddit was much better before a bunch of changes and Lemmy hasn't filled that/not sure it will catch up.

I don't care if it succeeds or not. We'll all just move on to the next thing if it doesn't.

Yes of course it costs money - but it's not my business to run and it's the business's problem. I'm not a charity or an investor so I don't need to worry about whether the business succeeds or not.

So basically, no reason to donate.

DingoBilly ,

Yep it is. But it's reality. No point fighting for something that doesn't exist.

DingoBilly ,

Alternative to reddit and to keep track of other technologies.

But yes, I get that the whole thing is free and donation driven. At the same time, if it's free then it's free. Why would you pay for something that's free, sort of defies the point. If it can't sustain itself being free then it can't be free.

Maybe it's an autistic thing but it's just logically irrational.

DingoBilly ,

I uninstaller tiktok a long time ago due to privacy concerns with it falling in China's hands.

Do other governments use my info? Sure... But they're far less likely to destroy my rights than China is.

DingoBilly ,

Why does he need to?

He's made thousands of people work for him for free and contribute data for him to sell for free. By most business definitions he's a legend that all other ceos wish they could copy.

US sues Apple for illegal monopoly over smartphones (www.theverge.com)

The US Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general accused Apple of operating an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market in a new antitrust lawsuit. The DOJ and states are accusing Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its iPhones.

DingoBilly ,

We can hope. Happy to take a chunk out of Apple as they're often given a free pass as their marketing and branding is so good that customers lap it up.

DingoBilly ,

But honestly, the fediverse is tiny and I find it's not a suitable replacement for anything at the moment. It does need to have more people joining for it to be a complete replacement.

As to whether Meta will extinguish it or not I don't know, but at least in the short term it could help. I don't think it's reasonable to pre-emptively shoot your foot off because you might get gangrene - I'd rather wait to see it and then decide.

DingoBilly ,

So what do you want exactly? Do you want the fediverse to remain small and irrelevant forever? Or do you want it to grow and become the dominant space with more bad actors but more useful actors as well?

Because you can't have both, and you will always have more extremists and shitty views with larger groups. I for one think the fediverse is a better implementation of the social tech for pack of a better word, and would prefer its implementation over the closed wall implementation of non fediverse applications.

DingoBilly ,

You'll have both though in the fediverse... So it's pretty irrelevant. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist.

DingoBilly ,

That's a fair call.

It does run the risk that the fediverse will always be irrelevant and will never see the growth needed to actually be useful for most people.

I'd prefer the risk myself but get that others aren't.

DingoBilly ,

That's completely fair. 👍

DingoBilly ,

I haven't seen far rights here myself, but it's a self selecting bias.

I've definitely come across more far lefts here than any other platform I've used which are equally as bad as far right imo.

I'm always concerned if there is only one strong group representation like that though. I'd rather have no extremists obviously, but if we have one side at least allow the other, otherwise that sort of crap starts seeping elsewhere.
