You can get a free Seafile Pro license if you create an account with them. Limited to 3 users, iirc. That's what I've been running and really using it to keep stuff on phone, desktop, and laptop reachable from any of the devices. I love it.

Father_Redbeard ,

What's crazy is that I tried NC on my server, which is a HP Microserver G8 hosting 13 total services. And it ran like crap. Tried the standard and AIO versions. On a whim tried NextcloudPi on a Pi4 and it has been awesome! Web interface is still pretty sluggish but I use apps that sync to NC most of the time like:

  • Quillpad for Google Keep type notes and checklists
  • Floccus for bookmarks sync
  • Deck for Kanban
  • Gnome online accounts for desktop and laptop connection with documents

So far it's been flawless. I doubt it would run well with more than a few users though.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I agree. I'm this case it works out for me since I'm under the 3 user limit.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Came to say the same. Unlike Syncthing, it all syncs to the server and only downloads to your various devices when you want it to. Vital for my small SSD on MacBook Pro. Syncthing can do similar but requires individually selecting files and folders to ignore, which I did not want to do.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I chimed in on the vote for Seafile on this thread. But I think it's worth trying NextcloudPi image to see if that does what you want. I've been presently surprised by how well it works compared to my experience with the AIO image.

what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it's a gacha. I don't want to gamble with my account being banned, so I'm keeping windows for it specifically.) this'll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues with...

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I'm running Pop!_OS. I tried Mint and EndeavorOS. I found that I don't like vanilla gnome, and while I appreciate KDE, it's too Windows-like. Which is contrary to what I'm trying to do by switching to Linux in the first place. So Pop is perfect for me.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Seafile is great. So fast, and unlike a bunch of these options, won't sync everything to each node. Everything is reachable from each device with a client, but only downloads what you want from the server. If Syncthing could do that without needing to do a bunch of "ignore" manipulation, I'd switch. But for my needs, Seafile is where it's at.

Cryptpad has a very capable Kanban in it. No mobile apps yet, but I understand that is on the road map.

Any good email service except tutamail and proton ?

I am now using disroot . I don't care about anonymity or anything as I just wanna use it to connect to my bank, ID and buy/book shit etc. Which all have my phone number, address, name etc anyway so no point in that . I just want the security privacy to be good enough that no one can easily hack it, steal my OTP, inbox etc and I...

Recent convert myself. And now that I've experienced mail, calendar, notes, and file storage all in the same app (android, at least) I can't go back to separate apps.

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Actually I'm not sure. I will investigate for sure though!

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Ok, I like this idea. Handn't thought of doing a single library we all log into. That certainly could make things easier since I already have the server up and running.

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

Obsidian. Plain text files with as many or as few plugins as you want. All versions of the app look and behave the same (other than mobile, but at least android is kinda close). Nothing stored in a database file, no manipulation of the text files themselves (looking at you, Joplin). I'm open to another option but so far, nothing is as elegant and platform agnostic as Obsidian.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I guess I never thought of this sort of option. I run Calibre in a docker container on my unraid server. Any books I add are sent over via FTP from whatever device I'm on at the time. I do still have to go into the Calibre instance and add the book. I believe there's a way to have it watch a folder for new items but not sure.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That looks nice! I tried to my brain wrapped around Restic CLI (and others) and just didn't click for my smooth brain. I'll have to try this.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I tried both. Proton email client on Android at least was awful. Super sluggish to navigate. In fact I have a chunk of credit with them because I cancelled too late to get a refund. No idea what I'm going to do with that. I already have a VPN and a Pwd manager...

Fastmail has been snappy and I like that the app has a notes section for quick jotting of ideas. I also like that Rclone can attach directly to Fastmail files. They just recently added Proton Drive support too though.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I did hear about that. But haven't tried it yet. I'll check it out, thanks!

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

It does seem snappier. But damn, I've come to love Fastmail's all-in-one app. Having calendar, notes, contacts and files all in the email app is something I didn't realize I'd care about but not sure I can do without now.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That and not being shown ads in my damn inbox is what lead me to the hunt for a better provider than Gmail. Another I just remembered about Proton that I didn't care for (and there may be a way to opt out) is the amount of promotional notifications/emails I'd get for their other services. Not as bad as NordVPN, but then again I don't think anyone is as bad as them regarding self-promotion. I'm happy to pay for a service if it means retaining some more privacy but mostly get rid of ads but the constant need to upsell was getting to me.

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That makes sense, I'll have to try that. It would be a silhouette of said chicken. Thanks!

I suppose you're right. But I've got this neat tablet here and I wanna use it! That and I want to do this on multiple projects, not just this example.

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That looks promising! Thank you.

@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

See? This is why I asked. I figured if nothing else, someone would have a better idea than what I've been trying!
That totally works! I'll have to try it more to see if it can do what I want. Thanks!

EDIT: yep, this idea works!

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

So your vote is "no"? Got it.

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah Kijiji was the other app I was trying to think of. These are good points. It really is frustrating that so many have migrated to using Marketplace instead of the alternatives.

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Excellent points. I haven't tried it yet, but the app Hermit has sandboxing as well and creates PWA-type apps out of websites. I've been using it for self hosted services that don't have and Android app component to them. Works reasonably well but I'm not trying to hide info....from myself :)

How responsive is your Nextcloud?

My Nextcloud has always been sluggish — navigating and interacting isn't snappy/responsive, changing between apps is very slow, loading tasks is horrible, etc. I'm curious what the experience is like for other people. I'd also be curious to know how you have your Nextcloud set up (install method, server hardware, any other...

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I've shit-talk NC so much on here and other forums but for some reason kept feeling compelled to try to make it work. I've tried a few of the Community Docker templates available on Unraid "store" as well as AIO. I've had issues with all of them. Then gave NextcloudPi a try on a spare Pi 4 (installed a SSD as boot instead of microSD) and it works much better. It's still much slower than I think it should be, but this version is far and away more responsive than the others.

Seafile is a beast of an app that syncs and performs incredibly fast. Some folks won't use it due to the git-like chunks it parses your data into on the server end (this is what accounts for the speed from what I've read). I understand the concerns in that regard, but I still like it and I have my own way to mitigate that concern.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Obsidian is my favorite thus far. It sucks at checklists/Todo though. So I use Quillpad as a shopping list keeper and Tasks.org as my task management/Todo, both syncing to my self hosted Nextcloud instance.

I'm still on Obsidian Sync because I couldn't get Syncthing to work reliably, but that was very early in my selfhosting journey, so I will try again.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I'll give it a go. The plain md files is exactly why I went with Obsidian in the first place. I just haven't found a FOSS alternative that I like as much. Closest is Acreom but it's not yet open source, on the roadmap though.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Coming back to this, I just realized I have Seafile syncing my Obsidian vault already. I know you said you're using it for Backup, but have you tried to use it as the only sync solution for Obsidian? I like it so much because of how fast it is, so if it works well, I may just do that once my membership expires.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

How incredibly timely!

I'll have to give it a go with a copy of my vault.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Dang. Again? I know they have the disclaimer that it's not to be relied on for photo backup yet and thankfully I'm not, but it's so much better than any of it's peers that I'd love to ditch the other apps.

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

It's not open source yet, but that is on their roadmap. Acreom behaves in a similar way to Obsidian in that it's text files on the local file system. But it actually handles check boxes much better than Obsidian.

That said, the Android app requires use of their cloud sync, which I'm not a fan of because like you I'd rather manage my own sync. I've encouraged the dev to consider it on Android but I seem to be the only one bringing it up at all.

Father_Redbeard , (edited )
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Not self hosted, but Tabby is the closest I've found. But I still don't like it as much as Termius. And from what other, more experienced people have said, Tabby is bloated, requiring way more system resources than a terminator emulator app should.

Also, I asked a related question here if you want to read some other suggestions.

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Just double checked to make sure I have it set that way. What is weird is that it can apparently sync marking a task complete back to NC. Just can't get a task created in the phone app to show up in NC.

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Found the issue!

In order to have tasks created outside of NC tasks appear in NC, the category needs to be set as Tasks. At least I think that's what the menu item is called. I've included a screenshot and until now didn't notice that the categories I created in Tasks.org are under a "local lists" heading. No wonder they don't sync. Seems like there should be a way to still set categories and have 2-way sync, but for now this is a working solution for me.

VPN to home network options

I currently have a server running Unraid as the OS, which has some WireGuard integration built in. Which I've enabled and been using to remotely access services hosted on that server. But as I've expanded to include things like Octopi running on a Pi3 and NextcloudPi running on a Pi4 (along with AdGuardHome), I'm trying to...

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That's looks handy. Thanks!

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Most services are on the unraid box. But I had a pi running Pi-hole for a long time (switched to adguardhome) and wanted that separate from the main server in case it went down. Pis boot up a lot faster than my server hardware and then you still need to start the array and mount drives. Having AGH on a Pi as primary DNS means minimal internet outages caused by my tinkering. I was given the 4 and put it in a really cool case that can fit a M.2 or 2.5" SSD and boot from it. So that is NextcloudPi and AGH. The 3 is because my 3d printer is nowhere near a LAN connection and 3 has WiFi. The 4 is sitting next to my router. We won't mention the 1B I've been messing with too...

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, I didn't realize that was an option to be honest, lol. I am having some issues with that box at the moment though so having a pi or my router acting as the gateway appealed to me with it's longer uptime

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah I know some of those words...

I'm still a newb but I'll have a look at that link, thanks!

Father_Redbeard OP ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That great, thanks for the info. I was able to get Wireguard setup in unraid but they make it pretty easy, so I didn't have a problem. I just didn't think about connecting to the entire network, not just the server.

Father_Redbeard , (edited )
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Not a bad idea. I get picky about aesthetics though. Dumb, I know. But I'll give it a try. Just seems silly to me that default launchers can't manage editing the dang app shortcuts

edit: Samsungs OneUI launcher does not put the badge on a PWA. But I'm not sure I trust them any more than Nova at this point....

Pi-Hole or something else for network ad blocking?

I've been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I'm looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will also...

Father_Redbeard ,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I ran Pi-hole for years. Switched to adguardhome running on 2 servers (primary and secondary) with AGH sync keeping the two instances identical. I like the UI better, dns rewrites, and the ability to simply block services entirely with a single click.
