Passkeys might really kill passwords (www.theverge.com)

Passkeys: how do they work? No, like, seriously. It’s clear that the industry is increasingly betting on passkeys as a replacement for passwords, a way to use the internet that is both more secure and more user-friendly. But for all that upside, it’s not always clear how we, the normal human users, are supposed to use...

Feathercrown ,

Ok so 2fa is based on things you know (passwords) things you have (devices), and things you are (biometrics).

I could see passkeys replacing the phone portion of a 2fa, but replacing a password? That can both invalidate the point of 2fa (verifies you have a device twice) and kill the benefits of having a password (if I lose my device I can still login, if it's stolen the attacker can't access all of my accounts).

They were saving time by not typing out dollarhashatdollaring

Feathercrown ,

Ok, but you also can't pretend both parties do it on the same scale when the scales are vastly different or entirely one-sided.

Feathercrown ,

They gambled their customers' personal info and lost

Feathercrown ,

Only the big ones

Feathercrown ,

Discord makes for a bad forum because it's not a forum! Stop using it as one! It's good for small groups that need realtime communication-- friend groups, project groups, even classes of students. If you're using it as a public forum you're using the wrong tool!

Feathercrown ,

And you're just going to believe Putin at face value?

Feathercrown ,

I thought this meant like the room was tilted that many degrees

Feathercrown ,

You can spoof caller ID but you can't spoof a number to receive texts to it. Can you imagine?

Feathercrown ,

Bro what??

Telco needs to be replaced

Feathercrown ,

No people say this constantly it's not just a strawman

Feathercrown , (edited )

That's true of any technology. As someone who is a programmer, has studied computer science, and does understand LLMs, this represents a massive leap in capability. Is it AGI? No. Is it a potential paradigm shift? Yes. This isn't pure hype like Crypto was, there is a core of utility here.

Feathercrown ,

They can summarize articles fairly well

Feathercrown ,

Fact of the matter is that behind even a basic AI is a shitload of complicated math.

Depending on how simple something can be to be considered an AI, the math is surprisingly simple compared to what an average person might expect. The theory behind it took a good amount of effort to develop, but to make something like a basic image categorizer (eg. optical character recognition) you really just need some matrix multiplication and calculating derivatives-- non-math-major college math type stuff.

Feathercrown ,

That's a good way of explaining it. I suppose you're using a stricter definition of summary than I was.

Point taken

Crypto solves a few theoretical problems and creates a few real ones

Feathercrown ,

Yeah this is basically how I think of them too. It's fascinating that it works.

How Quora Died (slate.com)

“Why Do So Many Music Venues Use Ticketmaster?” “What’s It Like to Train to Be a Sushi Chef?” “How Do Martial Artists Break Concrete Blocks?” If you were looking for answers to such questions 10 years ago, your best resource for finding a thorough, expert-informed response likely would have been one of the most...

The Quora experience:

"Hey Quorans, how many carrots go in a carrot stew?"

Answer to a similar question: "Why does Bugs Bunny eat carrots?"

unfunny joke "I have an IQ of 128" sarcasm Anyways to answer the question, it's because he needs good eyesight.

Feathercrown ,

This is a flawed method of thinking though, there are plenty of factors that go into what you think. If you're aware of and trying to avoid a negative stereotype, you're just as likely to fall into the "he doth protest too much" as someone who demonstrates that stereotype.

Feathercrown ,

If it's not trained on user data it cannot leak it

Feathercrown ,

To be fair the article headline is a straight up lie. OpenAI leaked it by sending a user someone else's chat history, ChatGPT didn't leak anything.

Feathercrown ,

Uh, no. Why would that be the case? Every technology has unique upsides and downsides and the downsides of this one are not being handled correctly and are in fact being exacerbated.

Feathercrown ,

Classifying you as a leftist doesn't mean that you have to agree with other leftists on everything, or that you aren't allowed to have a few opinions that are right-wing too. It just means that your opinions tend to fall on the left side of the spectrum.

In other words, people aren't left wing because they identify as left and then that determines their opinions. They're left wing because, regardless of how they came to their conclusions on what their opinions should be, those opinions are on the left.

Feathercrown ,

Lmao yup

Feathercrown ,

Excellent observation. I'm honestly surprised there's no well-known "universal parser" for common languages that can handle JSON, YAML, TOML, maybe even some form of XML, etc.

Feathercrown ,

Damn right we are. You can't shame someone into being convinced of a wrong statement.

Yup. This meme would be equally effective but not make the poster sound stupid and bad-faith if it replaced "magical being" with "all-powerful force" to meet religion on its terms and still "win" by making the same point-- but instead they go for the cheap shot and spoil their position.

Can I just say that Beeper is the worst message app name I've ever heard? It fills me with inexplainable rage.

    Feathercrown ,

Probably because they, unlike you, read the TOS and/or EULA

    Feathercrown ,

No because I don't use Beeper or have a iPhone or care about this really I just wanted to make annoying remarks in the comments and see if anyone dislikes the name "Beeper" as much as I do

    Feathercrown ,

I opened a raw text channel on the Telnet port for a personal game engine project and someone tried to enable commands and do some shady stuff. Unfortunately for them, that's not a valid chess move.

    Feathercrown ,

    endlessh

    Lmao thanks for this

    Feathercrown ,

The analogy is a little shaky but yeah that's a pretty good intro. The hard issue to solve here is with how this injustice is resolved. I think the most reasonable solution attacks the problem directly: rewriting racist laws (like zoning) and punishing or heavily disincentivising racist behavior in government officials (including police and judges). In the analogy, this would be equivalent to enacting hotel policies against discrimination and retrofitting disabled-accessible options into the building.
