Any good email service except tutamail and proton ?

I am now using disroot . I don't care about anonymity or anything as I just wanna use it to connect to my bank, ID and buy/book shit etc. Which all have my phone number, address, name etc anyway so no point in that . I just want the security privacy to be good enough that no one can easily hack it, steal my OTP, inbox etc and I...

K4mpfie ,

+1 for Mailbox.org
Comes with a great feature set and is inexpensive

Tbf I do this too but sometimes Windows will shut down after an update and next time I start it it will "configure my PC", restart once more and then show me the login screen. Doesn't even take 5 tho.
The worst thing however is when I start my laptop and login, just for Windows to decide it's updating rn. However this is usually happening at work so I suspect that the update server on the domain pushes an urgent security update that can only happen once a user logged in. Still super annoying but doesn't take more than 5 minutes.

Yeah I'm still on Windows 10

EU approval for chat control (www.patrick-breyer.de)

We need to do something against this. The EU plans to apply a law for a chat control in the territory. The approval say that all the chats and the emails would be send to the government to do AI scanning to in fact “find the children abuses”, even when using apps with end-to-end encryption (the EU will ask the services to...

I'm worried too but I doubt countries who voted against it will just lie down and turn over.
I'm sure local courts will fight this on the grounds of national privacy laws.
And just because the EU wishes this to be a thing doesn't mean it's happening too. The technological groundwork needs to be developed for this and I can imagine that some service will drag their feet at implementing that.
At least that's my unicorn utopia with rainbows I currently live in to bear this reality 🫠

K4mpfie ,

I agree with you. I'm a fairly new Linux User and I start to run into these issues too. I think Linux just lends itself to projects that require you to google. It's the endless fallacy of "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"
However if we apply the average user use case: (A laptop to do light surfing, consuming media, and writing Emails) Linux can run (mostly) perfectly fine. (If you choose a reasonable Distro, not Arch). Personally I run Fedora with Gnome.(Realistically Ubuntu is a better choice for average users) Most major apps work via flatpacks and update centrally from the app store. They work out of the box. Firefox, Thunderbird, Only Office, Spotify what more does a Luser need?
Now granted one thing that does not work is legal streaming. No DRM Protection means no HD, High bit rate streaming. So you need to fall back to sailing the high seas.
Power management works out of the box for example under Fedora. Never charges over 80% notifies me at 20%
Sure having a better looking login screen, would be nice, but do I really care?
Sure emulating a 20 year old Windows game would be cool but I can't expect to run that as is on Linux.
Sure a better weather app in the notification bar would be great but I know that my local weather is never accurate anyway.

I'd say for most Luser cases Linux will work out, just don't make the mistake of thinking it's a proper workstation.

I tried two weeks ago.
Netflix and Disney+ resort to 720p. Amazon Prime was worse. The sound was soo bad.
edit: grammar

So confused as a german speaker xD Those Ös and Äs just don't make sense this way 😂

K4mpfie ,

I think you'd be surprised how close it would actually be, seeing how German spelling is almost spot on to the written word.
Like here for example. I took the liberty to steal your post

Bii tö tseints juu vant to sii in tis völd." Du juu häv ä feivörit kvout?

"Be the change you want to see in this world" Do you have a favorite quote?

Good job on "quote" that's creative spelling. In "Vörld" the o in this case is actually an ö when looking at it with a German pronunciation.
Now, this is my attempt at that sentence:

"Bie dä tschänsch ju want to sie in dis wörld" Du ju hef ä fevorit quote?

I have not seen this kind of language, so I assume it's a new trend for English speaker. In the DACH region, writing like you speak your accent is a pretty common thing outside the major towns.
I'll leave you with a pretty complex example where the writer tried to show the pronunciation by using different circumflex to show how different letters are pronounced. https://pasteboard.co/rMJcvSHAFx6g.jpg
It's pretty extreme, but if you are fluent in any German alpine dialect you will have little problem reading it.

Had a similar experience when roadtripping over there. Each town had a big share of local beers who were all great. Especially if you can enjoy a good IPA.
Local American beers definitely are on the same level as European ones.
Just don't buy Bud light and similar you get at a Walmart.

I still have a Samsung Ultrabook Series 9 with Windows 7 Ultimate laying around.
Buddy is over 10 years old and works in a pinch as a replacement device.
It's always a pleasure opening it and seeing the custom login screen

I wish I could upgrade it with a USB-C and more RAM but Samsung was really anti consumer back then...

K4mpfie ,

That's not right. As long as they are excluded from DnD with their phone number, Android will let them through. It even says so in the settings (feddit.de still has image upload issues but the info states that "Even if messaging and calling apps can't reach you, people that you choose here can still reach you through those apps")

K4mpfie ,

I'm running Stock Android 13 Fairphone 5.
So if it's not available for you it's most likely taken away by your vendor. I remember my Sony XZ2 with Android 10 already having that feature 🤔

Looking for the Perfect USB Flash Drive

I've been using some cheap flash drives for things like installing OSs and the like, but now I've picked up a Dell Wyse 3040 system to play with which only has 8gb of storage. So I'm installing the OS onto a flash drive permanently (don't worry, just for messing with, nothing of value will be lost if/when the drive craps out)....

As a general purpose USB (which not only works great for daily use as a thumb drive but also works with no issues as Linux Live or persistent USB) I can recommend the Sandisk Ultra line. I had them everywhere from 16GB to 128GB. They never let me down. The housing might look like it's made from flimsy plastic but it's surprising sturdy.

A second drive I'm currently preparing for use as a persistent Linux drive is the Samsung portable SSD T7. It's nice and sturdy and the USB C to USB C interface allows me to easily run it on my Laptop without using up any of my precious USB A ports.

K4mpfie ,

No I haven't tested them yet. However something I do notice is that people tend to forget the small drives much more often. Simply because of the form factor.

K4mpfie ,

Hey! Remember negative thoughts 2 hours after sundown are not valid!

Don't let yourself get pulled down by them too much and as others have suggested you can always speak to other people.

Proper self reflection is also a great tool to get out of such spirals. Use a diary and write down all the mean stuff you say to yourself in your thoughts. They will lose a lot of power once they materialize.

K4mpfie ,

Yeah sorry. This advice is not valid for all degrees of latitude. Use at your own caution
