I always tip my pizza delivery driver, but he's also the owner of the business and the guy making the pizza, and the pizza is fucking awesome.

Euro version:

service was OK - round up to 30€
service was good - give 2€ extra
service was exceptional - give 5€ extra
(doesn't scale with the price of the food)

Italian version:

Pay exactly €29,75 and guard the receipt with your life, or you're in trouble.

Make as many as'll fit in the oven and then deliver those. He only delivers locally and it usually takes 60 to 90 minutes to arrive, so it's better to pre-order.

Space planes carry along heavy-as-fuck wings, control surfaces and a lot of other bullshit that's only useful inside the atmosphere, and which massively increase fuel consumption for every single maneuver while your space plane is actually where you want it to do stuff - in space. And the only benefit is that the atmosphere helps lift and fuel your vehicle to about 10% of orbital velocity. The other 90% it will have to accelerate just like any other rocket.

The SpaceX approach is much better: Land and reuse all parts of your rocket, but don't carry them with you further than where they're useful. Rockets leave the atmosphere where wings would work within a few minutes anyway.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

I hate how good Arch is! It's like the more exciting, younger co-worker constantly seducing me to leave my wife Debian.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

So not only is no one reading the TOS, soon no one will be writing them either.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

ddg image search is superior to Google's though.

Time for an ICQ for the Fediverse?

Looks like ICQ is finally shutting down, just as interest in retro internet tools is growing.

@fediverse

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Yeah, let's recreate every dead service within the Fediverse! With open source and 2 dozen active users!

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

I brought my KDE idle RAM usage down to 500MB just by using the GUI options that come with it. That's about the same amount a default Xfce or LXQt needs.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

I disabled all animations, the baloo file indexing and all services that start automatically at login.
I also installed not the full KDE Suite but just Plasma Desktop and then uninstalled all parts I don't need.
So technically, I'm not running KDE but Plasma. From the KDE application Suite I use Dolphin, Konsole, the archiver, the image viewer, the PDF viewer and the system settings tool.

Best Local Smart Lock for Privacy/Security

I’m solidly leaning towards a Schlage Connect Lock due to its local only Zwave capabilities (which has the benefit of also extending battery life). I was strongly considering the Aqara U100 for its many features, but based on what I’ve seen I can foresee it being a nightmare to get working locally with home assistant and the...

The re-entry burn is the burn to slow down your spacecraft below orbital speeds, initiating re-entry.
Every spacecraft that wants to land back on earth after orbiting it needs to do a re-entry burn.
The only exception, theoretically, are spacecraft that return from outside earth's orbit. They could in theory re-enter by steering towards the atmosphere at the right angle. I don't know if they actually do that in practice or slow down to orbital speeds first, though.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Thanks for the correction and clarification. Looks like I'll have to return my degree from KSP academy.

KISSmyOSFeddit , (edited )

I can't explain it either, but it really is different. I can only assume they improved the hydrolysis process or added plant-based fats that are solid at room temperature (palm oil or coconut oil).

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Looks like ads in the start menu aren't anything new.

Edit: I'm dumb, but I'm leaving my comment here.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

The feature will obviously just be disabled on machines that don't support it.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

How do you log into lemmy on lynx? I've been trying to find a text browser I can use for lemmy, with no success so far.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Yes, there's a really great one called Neonmodem Overdrive.
Which currently doesn't display anything on lemmy. I already opened an issue and the developer is looking into it. But for now, there are no options to read and post on lemmy from the console, and I've spent a day researching alternatives.
Browsh doesn't work cause it doesn't receive mouse clicks from GPM due to a bug. All the l*nks browsers don't support whatever Javascript is needed to log in.
If you have another option, I'm all ears.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

yep, my employer is one of them. Only around 200 VMs but my former employer (an MSP with several hundred customers, among them the administration of the city I live in, all schools, all kindergartens and the church) was also in the process of migrating when I switched.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

new features? We don't do that here.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Help! My boot loader got corrupted by SATAN!

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

That doesn't make any difference to Flatpaks.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Windows Laptop: "Sure, no problem, just let me install all these updates first. Why don't you go ahead and create a Microsoft account?"

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

In most cases, this is because an individual page was deleted or removed on an otherwise functional website.

How is this news? I bet a lot of pages were also added in the same time frame, very likely orders of magnitude more.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Even 100% freshly juiced fruit juice with no additives is a sugar bomb.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Fructose isn't good for you, either.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

There's a much faster way. Just put this in your hosts file:

0.0.0.0 google.com
KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Can confirm, I enjoy Fallout New Vegas and getting pegged.

Coming to terms with no longer having privacy and control over my technology

I miss the days of VHS and DVD shelfs in homes, for example. If you bought the tapes and had them in your home, no corporate entity could alter those tapes without your consent, monitor how many times you watch them, sell your data to whomever they please without your knowledge, roll out new mandatory conditions to a 'user...

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

You can still buy movies on physical media.
You can use an OS that doesn't pull this shit.
And you can buy your games from GOG which has no DRM.
All your issues have pretty solutions.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

I want to see a world where content creators are simply paid by the hour, while they work. Why do they get to still make money off their work 70 years after they died?

Yes, it would probably mean that billion-dollar-movies aren't viable anymore, and most YouTubers couldn't live off their videos, but I see that as a good thing.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

I tried it recently, but eventually gave up. It had so many little and not-so-little issues on my laptop, which I solved one by one over 2 weeks, reading and learning a lot. Even recompiled the kernel with a custom patch to get energy management to work.

Then I did a speed test on Wi-Fi, and it capped out at 6MBit (I have a Gigabit connection). The solution apparently is to install a Wi-Fi network adapter inside a Linux VM and connect to that on boot.
That's when I went back to Debian where everything just works out of the box on my PC.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

I heard netbsd runs on anything, even toasters.
Does that mean it runs well on laptops too?

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

To be fair, 99% of BSD's probably run in a VM.

KISSmyOSFeddit , (edited )

BSD isn't really a competitor to Windows, try installing Windows 11 on your router and report back.

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Wifi is a bit clunky

Can you elaborate? Are you just dealing with the slow speed or did you do something special to it?

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Are we sure that's a dog he's dragging? A live one?

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Would you like to back up your folders to OneDrive?
It would be a shame if something were to happen to your files!

KISSmyOSFeddit ,

Just put a big archive in your nextcloud with default config, your server will be wheezing in no time.

KISSmyOSFeddit , (edited )

It scans for viruses inside the archive, which takes longer than the 5 minutes interval before it spawns a new maintenance task, which scans inside the archive while the previous task is still scanning...
