I am already learning to use FreeBSD. I definitely recommend reading the official handbook, it is even a pretty great introduction to Unix overall.

Matriks404 ,

I've done this before building a dssktop PC. Probably not a bad way to start if you're planning to have a desktop anyway, but not have enough money to buy all things needed to buy one.

Matriks404 ,

I like how they end support for OS without providing an upgrade for a lot of people. Might as well put a Linux ad in their "Your PC is not supported" bullshit.

Matriks404 ,

Weren't versions for 95/98 7.0 and then for ME 8.0?

Matriks404 ,

Start menu 🤮

Matriks404 ,

Everything. I don't have time for accessing it and searching for what I am looking for.

Matriks404 ,

I bought my first 3DS last year and I love it.

Matriks404 ,

This extension stopped working correctly for me some time ago. It just stopped redirecting to breezewiki correctly.

Matriks404 ,

I don't even understand what the point is of this product. Seems like e-waste at first glance.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

Matriks404 ,

How hard is it to make a decent OS Microsoft? Haven't you got enough of our money already?

Matriks404 ,

Jesus Fucking Christ. They really want people to switch to Linux, don't they?

Microsoft should stop trying to become another Apple. This is not going to work.

Matriks404 ,

Is there something like PowerToys Run for KDE? That's one of the utilities I would miss the most when switching to Linux.

Matriks404 ,

My three biggest problems with YouTube are:

  • It sucks on desktops/laptops with bigger UI scaling enabled, some stuff just doesn't fit.

  • The search function on YouTube is useless and completely broken. Instead of searching normally it:

    1. Repeats same results multiple times;

    2. Display unrelated Shorts nobody asked for;

    3. Instead of displaying relevant results it shows stuff you have already watched or picked by YouTube algorithm.

  • You can't skip sponsored segments with YouTube Premium. You need SponsorBlock browser extension for that.

Matriks404 ,

For browsing the web 4 GB is enough, unless you do some multitasking. Still I wouldn't buy a computer with less than 8 GB of RAM nowadays.

Matriks404 ,

Why wait even? Cold water is still water.

I didn't see any difference on my 2in1 ThinkPad, performance was about the same, although Windows 11 UI felt snappier.

    Matriks404 ,

If it's your device it's always morally correct.

    Matriks404 ,

I never understood why would you want to go back in time to kill Hitler. How do we know that somebody worse isn't going to show up in history books, just some time later? And probably as nukes developed around that time, probably with atomic bombs?

    Matriks404 ,

I am still waiting for my drunk self to buy myself a piano or some other instrument, so I have a reason to learn to play it, lol.

    Matriks404 ,

You mean Linux? Other Unixes don't necessarily use this naming convention.

I don't know anybody here in Poland being russophobic, although I don't know about other countries.

    Matriks404 ,

Aside from weird design choices and obvious privacy issues I like Windows 11 much more than Windows 10. It is especially more usable on my 2in1 laptop, even though it doesn't officially "support" it, which is just nonsense.

    Matriks404 ,

What if at the end of our lives we just do that? Unknowingly. Infinitely. That's a fucking horror.

    Matriks404 ,

Probably for driving truck into car while being drunk. (the former in game, letter in RL).

    Matriks404 ,

I really hope that's not true. I am not sure about state of self-driving cars, but there still should be a conscious person in the front seat.

I dislike Apple, but this is the way future will like. AR (and maybe VR, but who knows) will definitely be amazing in a decade or so. BUT I think some people will still stick to smartphones, especially ones who don't want to spend their whole day with technology and social media.

I am definitely buying an AR headset, as long as it's affordable and can replace at least half of the tasks I do on my computer/phone. The AR device with Windows 11 and computing power of standard computer would be just fucking amazing, and I wouldn't go back.

    Matriks404 , (edited )

Well, that's kinda stupid on their part, but I bet they will be rejoining AR race later though, probably too late while Apple and Google creates good AR platforms with massive support of 3rd parties. And I expect Google (or, ekhm, Alphabet?) to show something like that in next few years.

Still, as for Windows AR devices, I expect to there being some 3rd party ones in ~10 years, that have computing power of desktop PC's we had yesterday or we have today. And we can already see that even mid-budget mobile devices can run heavy desktop environments (like Windows or some Linux desktops (like GNOME and KDE)) with no issues whatsoever, this is just going to expand into AR devices.

    Matriks404 ,

Not sure what do you mean by PC interface. Do you mean interface between user and computer? (which has nothing to do with software) Or like GUI in an operating system?

If by "PC interface" you mean GUI, then I still don't get you, because there's real alternative to Windows UI in any desktop operating system last time I checked. Sure Apple has macOS with its simple UI, and may be good for users that need to do only basic tasks, but if you need to have powerful (and in some parts customizable, although Unix desktops like KDE or Xfce may be better suited for max customization) UI with great UX for power users and without need to get to command line often (like you do on Linux) nothing beats Windows.

    Matriks404 ,

Yeah, as for development I'd say Linux (or any Unix-like) is more suited for that, especially when you have really great shell, development utilities and awesome package managers, and the overall system design is good for that. Also some stuff is just faster to do in command line, I could never see myself using git graphically for example, as doing so only gives me more headaches. But for most stuff I prefer GUI, because GUI's tend to have common design choices, and you can generally figure it out in few minutes, while for CLI utilities anything goes, some have built-in interactive prompts, some incompatible syntax, there's sometimes steep learning curve, and list goes on.

    Matriks404 ,

I don't really use start menu, nor have ads in my OS (may be regional thing), but that's a good point.

    Matriks404 ,

It’s really good but I do wish it supported more languages like Russian

It's never too late to learn the language of enemy!

    Matriks404 ,

I am pretty sure it won't work 100% like sudo on Unix-likes, so why didn't they come up with different name, like elevate? This command being sudo will only confuse users.

    Matriks404 ,

I don't like start button being on the center when using mouse, but come on, when using touch screen on my laptop I don't really care where it's at exactly, as it takes roughly the same amount of time to move my finger to any place on the screen.

    Matriks404 ,

That hardly looks like original source code, but more like a HTML dumped from the website.

Or maybe just use used some visual editor to insert tables? I don't believe it's written by hand.

I remember YouTube videos or podcasts where presenters said that we'd have very advanced AI by GPT-5 and singularity is just around the corner. Marketing stuff of these companies pushing language models made us all fools (including me). Now finances are catching up to all this bullshit.

    Matriks404 ,

It's 2024 and yet, user programs can still steal data from each other. There should be some kind of permissions system in Windows, like in Android and additionally apps should ask if they can access data of other program.

    Matriks404 ,

Only MS-DOS 1.25 and 2.0 are open-sourced under MIT license, anything newer is not. These versions were pretty bare-bones, only DOS 2.0 implemented directories for example.

Unless you mean FreeDOS, which is an open-source DOS-based operating system, which generally should work with any DOS programs/games, but it still may not be 100% compatible with some proprietary software.

    Matriks404 ,

These probably operate completely shut from other networks/internet, so I definitely agree. But I guess a lot of folks here are Linux maniacs and can't stand something running ancient and obsolete OS while the all-mighty Unix-based operating system could solve all of the problems, not mentioning that it would create more in the process.

    Matriks404 ,

We should just re-implement DOS in Rust and call it RS-DOS.

I really like Samsung phones, but oh boy, they are so bloated on default install it's unbearable. When I got my Samsung Galaxy A52, there were like 10 different things that wanted my attention on first boot, and I uninstalled most uninstallable Samsung apps straight away.
