Instead of a “renaissance man”, I’m a “renaissance nerd”. Pinball? Sure. Sci-fi? Of course. video games? Natch. 70’s Italian Prog-rock? A raison d’etre.

Mbourgon ,

Go do the demo. It is honestly really impressive. Had no intention of doing it, I’m not the target demographic or audience, but I was there to get a battery replaced and while I waited they did it. My jaw dropped at least twice.

I’m at a loss for the kind of things it can do for me day-to-day right now (and yeah, they have to come up with good selling points there), but for a virtual desktop I’d be there if it were cheaper. But you kinda see where they’re heading - glasses where you could read the web, check weather, watch tv, or play games, the UI, and the phone is just a computing brick that sits in your pocket all day

Mbourgon ,

Huh? I was pretty sure it’d fall out of OS support this year. And without security patches, shudder

Mbourgon ,

What are examples of “broadband emitter “ fabrics that I can buy? The only links I can find are for this article.

Mbourgon ,

Dang it. Because something keeps me a couple of degrees cooler than some-wicking-fabric would be nice

Mbourgon ,

It’s not just SQL, it’s frequently the OS. Corporate tools don’t support the new OS so you install the “supported” OS, which is now several years old, and which only supports the next version or two of SQL Server. Microsoft also didn’t help things with 2012R2, which was 2 years later but had the same EOL as 2012.

And yes, you can set compatibility level on the database, but there are still edge cases where the engine version matters. And the business prioritizes, but upgrades are lower on the list than money-making features.

Mbourgon ,

Not true! Mine’s exceptionally ugly, so I think “I really need to replace it” the instant I walk in.

Mbourgon ,

Explorer++ is a freeware app that does it, though not integrated

Mbourgon ,

Shoegaze is actually called that because the bands all have a ton of effects pedals, and they’re constantly changing settings and moving from pedal to pedal. So it looks like they’re staring at their shoes. I’ve never heard of it referring to spectators, though in hindsight I’ve done that a couple of times at shows, so...maybe?

Remember kids: you can buy musicians ear-plugs that mean you can keep listening to it your whole life without crippling phantom noise all the time.

Mbourgon ,

There already is a sub, at least to stop drinking.

Mbourgon ,

Alton Brown’s with Gruyère Is fantastic. The funny thing is, kids don’t like it because it’s got too much flavor or something. Lol.

Mbourgon ,

Shit. Didn’t expect Escoffier to get pulled out here. I thought it was this recipe, but I just checked and there’s only cheddar. So now I feel like I ripped you off. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/baked-macaroni-and-cheese-recipe-1939524.amp

But thanks for sharing the recipe! I’ve been looking for an excuse to do a Moreau sauce for a while. I don’t think it’s an actual “mother sauce”, but still one I haven’t made. Appreciate it!

Mbourgon ,

Everyone I see using them merely uses it to blow the detritus into the street. What you’re saying makes a lot of sense, but people don’t do that

Mbourgon ,

I agree that it doesn’t do any homophone handling with music. It simply tries to make English words 95% of the time, and then search for them. I listen to niche music and it’s incredible frustrating - foreign bands, unique names, etc - all fucked. It’s the one thing I hate on my iPhone - how bad Siri still is, 13 years later.

Mbourgon ,

I believe the hardware for the touch was on the X and Xs

Mbourgon ,

I use Feedly. It’s not Google News, but it works well, the mobile app is great, and it’s not going to be killed on a whim.

Elon Musk says it's his turn to have the remote (www.engadget.com)

[Xitter] just announced a smart TV app for streaming video. Or, more accurately, that it claims it's building one, with absolutely no launch date mentioned. The appropriately-named [Xitter] TV wants to be “your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.”

Mbourgon ,

Plays pretty well with steam link, but yeah, I’ll be in line for the mobile version as well.

Mbourgon ,

“Honey, remember we were talking about how catching Covid multiple times makes you stupid?”

Mbourgon ,

Unfortunately, it’s probably just because it’s a “major version” feature. All reporting sounds like they are using one of two different models, either their own or possibly googles, but they want that to be a big part of the push for the new phone, I’m sure, just like they did with the iPhone 4s and Siri. I’m hoping it just incorporates more local device features, like better shortcuts and better Siri. I don’t need it to draw photos, I don’t need for it to look up shit on the Internet… But if it could summarize the page I’m currently reading, that might be nice

Mbourgon ,

And if you like that, the same group did a TV show called Danger 5 which is MORE unhinged and awesome

Mbourgon ,

Mechina - Siege. Take a metal band with industrial influences. Release an album. Take that album. Add tons of atmospherics and electronica. Release that version as well. Now take that, and add angelic votes, and some harsh and release that as well. You can buy whichever version you prefer. All great for the different reasons

Wayfarer – American Gothic. The jangly guitar alternate 1890s death/black metal band you didn’t know you needed.

Sermon - on golden verse. proggy anthemic melodeath with fantastic clean vocals.

Mbourgon ,

Siege is the high point for me - it’s where I came in, but the mix of the metal + electronica + symphonic + beauty vocals is prettyy much perfect there. I like the newer and older, and I love being able to strip away the layers.

Mbourgon ,

They just dropped a 15 minute track yesterday. :)

Mbourgon ,

Seriously, they couldn’t put in a 1/I/l test? That’s half of what I want a different font for.

Mbourgon ,

No upper case I either.

Mbourgon ,

Let us know what you wind up going with.

Mbourgon ,

Spoken like somebody who’s never had a corporate laptop with all the big-brother-ware and anti-virus. At 10pm, having stepped away hours ago, the fan is still at full blast.

Mbourgon ,

I love the ancient Microsoft Ergo keyboard. 1995 is texting.

Mbourgon ,

Agreed, should have been “out of your gourd”.

Mbourgon ,

it’s consdierably easier to find a job when you have a job.

(Hypothetically) How terrible would Privacy be if using dial-up internet in modern day?

I was born in 2002 and wasn't really much exposed to the internet until 2012. I saw my older brother and sister watching YouTube on my Dad's laptop in 2007 with a (presumably ethernet) cable, but I'm sure they weren't using dial-up, and I think most people had abandoned it by that time....

Mbourgon ,

1mb would take around 6 minutes, since IIRC your speed would be closer to 28.8 than 56 (I seem to recall that 56k was in large part due to compression, and those file types are all compressed).

Mbourgon ,

Interesting!

Mbourgon ,

Is it worth it to double-NAT, and run a router between your internal network and their internet box? Then your router is doing the internal routing and possibly DNS too. It’s not perfect, but it might be worth it if the internet drops that much.

Mbourgon ,

Many people outside do not have headphones on. But most people who are walking/running/cycling do have them on.

Mbourgon ,

For what it’s worth, I’ve quite enjoyed my aftershokz, on my second pair. The one downside I have is that the wind going over them makes a noise in my ear, and the furry things you clip to your bike helmet straps don’t help enough. don’t get me wrong, you have the wind noise in your ears regardless, but the aftershocks make it worse.

On the plus side, I don’t have to worry about them ever falling off, unlike these, strapped underneath my helmet like they are.

Mbourgon ,

I don’t get this, I’m guessing Pokémon, but came to say

BE NOT AFRAID

Mbourgon ,

Tell him to look at EnergyOgre.

Mbourgon ,

Everyone games Power To Choose. I’ll keep TPG in mind in the future. Thanks!

Mbourgon ,

What did you use to chart this? And nicely done.

Mbourgon , (edited )

Excalidraw. Reading is hard. (Yeah, I missed that it was mentioned in the thread)

Mbourgon ,

Yeah, definitely a concert to Mermaid.
