That's what it's become. But, hear me out, what if I want the hardware without the software? Tough luck? Both are so tied together that if the company pulls the rug you don't have reasonable access to the hardware.

I don't want to cook after I get home from work. From scratch, doubly so.

We need more FOSS. If our governments weren't utterly captured we could publicly fund worthwhile projects.

PilferJynx ,

There's a sweet spot between concentration and dilution. I hope lemmy can self regulate that ratio.

PilferJynx ,

They don't. It's all bad faith to get what they want - control.

PilferJynx ,

Lol. "Kids, do some drugs, just not all the drugs"

"Come, Mr. Frodo!' he cried. 'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you."

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn't use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don't agree to their terms, then I don't get access to their new products. That...

It's just an exhausting uphill battle that never ends. I don't have the time or resources to combat monied corporations.

Then how would you be able to hide a camera for facial recognition?

X is becoming a 'ghost town' of bots as AI-generated spam content floods the internet — A sign of the scale is the thriving industry in bot-making (www.abc.net.au)

X is becoming a 'ghost town' of bots as AI-generated spam content floods the internet — A sign of the scale is the thriving industry in bot-making::The internet is filling up with machine-generated "zombie content" designed to game algorithms and scam humans. Experts call it the "great AI flood".

I've almost lost complete confidence in anything I see online as true. These image filters to full on bots are distorting what reality is in very negative way. Most of the things still can be filtered out if you're paying attention, but how long until the tech becomes indistinguishable from actual human engagement? 5-10 years is my guess.

Not all of us are blessed with the smarts.

Basically it costs too much to recycle most plastic. It's just so much cheaper to sell it to impoverished countries that will either burn it or dump it somewhere.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

I just left my comments on. I still use reddit when searching actual human responses from Google. Maybe one day someone might find my archived comments useful in the future.

I think, on average, we're too dumb as a species to keep it in mind. I would hate to say we deserve the system we've got, but here we are.

PilferJynx ,

It honestly makes me genuinely sad. He definitely has complexes and holes in his soul to conduct this behavior. Doesn't excuse him from being a complete asshole though.

PilferJynx ,

For now.. Things can always change and it's usually for the worst.

PilferJynx ,

I've always said capitalism and corporations are anti-social. They make society worse for profit.

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

"Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

Wow, this is my exact setup. Except I have auxio exclusively for audiobooks to keep them away from my random shuffle.

Zuckerberg seeks to place responsibility onto Apple and Google for underage social media use (www.cnn.com)

Zuckerberg seeks to place responsibility onto Apple and Google for underage social media use::Apple and Google, not social media companies, should be responsible for checking users’ ages to ensure they are not underage, Zuckerberg told lawmakers, suggesting it would be “trivial” for Congress to design legislation...

Wouldn't it be awesome to buy something and have full control of it

PilferJynx ,

It's kinda scummy to manipulate the market as such, but it's much more scummy to partake in the fraud.

PilferJynx ,

Anything corporate produced, hell ya. The creators have already been paid out and the ones getting royalties don't need it to survive. For independent creators that depend on their work to sustain them, then it becomes an a gray issue.

Plus, ev's keep the pollution out of the cities and places we tend to live in.
