Private policing has been done.

You had to pay a fee to have them attempt to solve whatever crime you wanted investigated.

Too bad if you’re poor.

If you’re rich the crime will be solved. Doesn’t matter if they got the right person.

Police take bribes, so they can find the other “right person”.

They were used to force workers back to work when they rebelled over poor pay and working conditions.

They were used to hunt down escaped slaves.

Want to know why people didn’t want state-funded cops? Because those police would be used to limit their freedoms. Anyone participated in a protest lately? How about being pulled over because of your color? Assets seized? Not that you would have avoided these things with private police, though. Modern police still protect the capital of the wealthy, just on the taxpayer dime now, the rich don’t have to pay them directly.

I’ve been traveling for a long time. Easily one of the worst a things I’ve seen happening culturally is globalization of brands that “dumb down” local foods and crafts. Doesn’t matter where you go, particularly the westernized world, it’s the same shit everywhere. The same brands. Even some of the food is moving towards sameness. Want to find a local gift to bring home? Good luck. It’s all the same stuff made in China, each store has the same stuff on the shelves.

You’ll have better luck outside the metro areas, but usually if you’re traveling to see the sights they are often in more metro/touristy areas.

TBF there are far, far too many technological solutions that are “science will save us” but haven’t been fully fleshed out, studied, or require some modest form of unobtainium to work in mass deployment. Also, a huge chunk of those solutions would have to have been implemented 20 years ago, yet haven’t even made it off the proverbial drawing board yet.

IMO solutions need to be implemented now, like wind, solar, especially nuclear power, EV, etc. Yeah, nuclear is temporary, and yes, nothing stays in place longer than a temporary solution, but it’s a known and can be built now rather than yet another 5-15 years of waiting for untried tech solutions. Unfortunately the comic isn’t entirely wrong, we are going to need to lose some things if we want to save ourselves.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

This doesn’t have to be the binary choice you’re making it. Both can be done. Furthermore I also disagree with the premise that imperfect solutions should be immediately discounted. There is no perfect solution.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

I don’t know why it’s so hard. I means “Things I don’t like, especially when it pertains to anything that could be called liberal.”

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Bar Code was one. Cameras streaming patrons in other franchises in other cities so you could kinda interact with them.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Just let their parents buy it and let the kid have unsupervised access.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

You must’ve spent a while filtering Mr. True’s compendium for his reasonable takes, you’d be a good “spin doctor”.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

No, he isn’t always wrong, that’s why I mentioned the filtering part. More often than not the comic presents a reactionary, violent jerk or someone who says shitty things justified by “that’s how we all really feel but won’t say it out loud” kind of thing.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

He even defends women from lecherous men! What a guy!

RememberTheApollo_ ,

They are. I’ve seen phones being on magnet mounts or held on the steering wheel with videos playing.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

mIRC/IRC is still going, right? Haven’t used that in probably a decade.

RememberTheApollo_ , (edited )

I’m seeing a lot more libs understanding what 2A is really for. Preventing success of things like January 6.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

This was my thought. DNA isn’t stable so it’s a lousy storage medium. Degrades over time, mutations in living organisms, etc.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

So unreliable except for what 98% of the world uses it for?

RememberTheApollo_ ,

We live in a system that monetizes everything, then seeks to restrict access to those things in order to profit.

Knowledge is just one casualty.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

A troll account is still a troll account spreading misinformation. That’s not “fun”.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

It’s infrastructure. Too inconvenient to find a spot to charge, the apartments where you live probably don’t have chargers, your workplace doesn’t either…

RememberTheApollo_ ,

They just need to come out and “lease” the game.

“Buy” should no longer be on any selection as far as live service games go, or any game dependent on developer servers to operate.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

I use discord for a a couple of things, but I can’t stand the layout. That’s probably one of the main things that’s kept me from using it more.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

I think an automated battery swap system would work best for OTR trucking. Pull in, battery packs swapped, off they go. The charge for much larger batteries would take longer, or at least would be better done not attached to a vehicle for maintenance or in case of thermal problems.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

lol, considering the “quality” content in the comments section it’s just going to be a continuation of that dumpster fire.

RememberTheApollo_ , (edited )

Your usage must be different. I put mine on in the morning and it will last until the following morning with a trip to the gym and workout tracking, too. It’s a couple years old, still makes it pretty much a full day.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

“If you can’t pound the facts, pound the table”.

— republicans.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

China has a bunch of the world by the balls thanks to the world using Chinese manufacturing for everything from chips to medication. That alone is a national security problem. Sure, it maintains some stability due to economic ties, but the flip side is that we can only exert so much pressure on China before it will bite us in the ass, and we’re fucked if all-out war started and we got cut off.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

53%?!

Sounds like one of those shitty used car joints “no credit, no problem” that you sign your life away for a mediocre car.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

One of the biggest walled gardens around. Also, they treat users like they’re stupid. No, you can’t do anything with your hardware or software that we don’t want you to. No, you can’t fix it, either. Windows/Linux you’re free to break shit, change whatever you want (not always for windows), repair a system you build yourself, etc. And I despise apple’s perceived “status” and premium pricing. We joke about , but there’s some weird social cache around messaging and even dating where you have to have an iPhone to participate. Tf is wrong with people.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

The only two things higher than that are the fees they extract from overdraft and the money they pay their legal team.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

This is just more change for the sake of change because they really have no other actual objective improvement to make to the device.

I understand they claimed they needed room for internal components when they removed things like the button and headphone jack, but after having partially disassembled my own phone for DIY battery replacement the power and volume buttons are so minimal in volume that there can’t be any measurable gain for the consumer by removing them. The only potential gain is a reduction in manufacturing complexity and a cost savings for Apple. Personally I think this was the case for both jack and button as well. It wasn’t about internal space as much as it was eliminating components to save costs.

Personally, I miss the tactile button that confirmed a press and executed a function when that button was pressed rather than swiping up and hoping it catches the gesture right to switch apps or close them. Especially to get rid of the phone search window. Anyway, I don’t mean to be the guy that gripes about change, but IMO these changes are about profits and not the user, they remove valid and useful functionality.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

That was fine. IMO that worked pretty well.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

I already barely watch YouTube but for a couple people I subscribe to, and I already pay membership for their content so I get no ads. YouTube has already whittled me down to the minimum thanks to their overbearing ad content.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Because there’s a market for functional, minimalist vehicles that do a job and don’t require 8 or more years of payments. Trucks have become status symbols more often than not.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

iA. Gotta stick with the naming convention. IntelliApple or some thing.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Shit. Need to grab a couple spare Pis now while they’re still good.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Our insurance company offered a rate reduction if we installed a device on the cars to monitor how we drove. It we met whatever metric they set we’d get a discount for “safe driving”.

Hell no. I’m paying full price to not have them looking over my shoulder while driving.

Because you know that the data will be sold, or even used to classify your risk as a driver and potentially raise your rates. There’s nothing altruistic about these companies.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

That’s some bullshit.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Problem is that any regulation proposed to rein in the slide towards capitalist dystopia is suddenly labeled as anti-democratic commie socialist dictators trying to crush the free market.

Make no mistake, corporations are dictatorships. They do need to be held in check.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Anyone have a link to a compilation?

RememberTheApollo_ , (edited )

Thank you!

Edit: well, after a quick Look through of Mr. Everett True it appears the OP comic is one of the few supporting a more legit view. Otherwise he’s just a selfish and violent jerk with no tact or desire to be publicly tolerant of things everyone does to get along in society. He doesn’t mind cracking skulls over irritations. All couched in the premise of “that’s how we all really feel” to make it OK. He’s into shaming and beating kids, throwing women into prison for whatever irritation their kid generates, etc.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Experts: social media is harmful for kids

Schools: let’s use social media as an official communication platform!

WTF.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Popular usage of PCs does not revolve around gaming.
