Definitely not. Sometimes you even have to install additional bloatware like "HP support assistant" for example to complete the update process because the built-in update system is dysfunctional af.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Linux devs would just make a patch to work with that configuration as it'd be considered a bug.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

I see you're unaware of the number one rule of the Linux Kernel : DO NOT BREAK USER SPACE
The patch would be distributed the exact same way that we distribute every single other patch in Linux.

@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Which is?

Directly patching the code, then letting the distros do their thing.

I have no idea what the protocol is if I wouldn't want to update some application.

You'd just put it in an exclude list in your specific package managers config file for example. The depends are forward compatible and will just keep updating as normal. Very very rarely is there ever a case where forward compatibility is broken, and if it ever is the devs did so for a very thought out reason.

blocking updating because you have or don't have something else on your system seems to be basically the norm with Linux.

It is yes. Because if you don't have a library an application depends on then it just won't run.
Except "have", that's not a real scenario; it's always a matter of not having something; there's packages that may conflict because they provide a different implementation of the same interface, but you'll never be blocked by an application that depends on that interface.
The dependencies are defined by the distro maintainers when they packaged the software.
It ensures that package will function properly when installed.

If you really really want a really really old version of something that depends on deprecated dependencies/libs, there's always portable and universal package solutions that include those specific deps with it instead of relying on system libs.

Linux Mint Debian Edition

Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment

Rustmilian ,

Linux Mint is Ubuntu based as it originally started as a protest distro against decisions take by canonical.
LMDE cuts out the middle man and is directly based on Debian.
If you use Cinnamon DE and like LTS releases; where secure patches are backported and feature releases are held back until the next major release, then LMDE is a good choice.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. Because Valve put in a lot of work and convinced EAC to add support and collaborated with them to get it added, only for Epic & Tim Weenie himself to immediately do something bad, spread FUD and other such crap.

Given that the global desktop OS market is estimated to be around 1.23 billion users, 4.03% of the entire global market is approximately 49.3 million users and exponentially growing. And that's excluding ChromeOS which accounts for another 2% and Unknown; which likely includes a significant number of Linux users; at 6%.
Linux jumped from 3% to 4% in just the last 8 months. Linux could potentially surpass the 5% market share milestone by the end of 2024 given the current trajectory of growth.

Actually, Linux + Proton has been found to increase performance on several games than when run natively on Windows, for example Cyberpunk 2077, RDR2, etc.
Sure, there's room for improvement, however Linux is improving every single day exponentially.

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Don't you have some loot boxes and gambling targeted towards children from Valve to go to?

Nope, because I don't play those games.
Also, Epic literally does that 24/7 with fortnite and other such crap.

Your middle school level insult totally means that you have a well reasoned point instead of fanboying for Valve.

I'm not a fanboy for Valve, I don't even play Valve's games. I just recognize that when Tim Weenie fires 1000 employees and then goes "If only we had a few more programmers.
It's the Linux problem. ..."
that he's talking out his fuckin ass.
I also recognize that Valve has been putting in a shit load of work into bettering the Linux ecosystem via Proton, The Steamdeck, enticing EAC & Battleye into agreeing to collaborate, among their countless contributions to various Linux related open source projects, such as dxvk, vkd3d, wine, the Linux kernel, etc. even if it's a long term investment on their own part.
There's a reason why it's called proton_eac_runtime and not eac_proton_runtime.

You have to be incredibly out of touch or a blatant Epic games fanboy to disregard the facts like that.

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Epic does something you like, it's to Valve's credit since Valve did it first.

Not at all. EAC gets credit for collaborating with Valve, Valve gets credit for laying the entire ground work allowing for that collaboration to occur in the first place (Proton, Linux Kernel contributions, Steam Deck, and negotiating with EAC).

Valve does something you don't like, it's okay since Epic does it even though Valve did it first and popularized it.

Wrong, lootboxes are a scourge upon the entire gaming industry no matter who does it.
Like I already fucking said I do not play games that have loot boxes in them, let alone any of Valve's games.
Loot boxes is irrelevant to the conversation in the fucking first place, can you stop with the strawman already. The conversation is on Linux game compatibility support, not loot boxes, stop derailing the conversation.

At least your logic is as advanced as your insults. 🤓☝️

" Oh no someone insulted Big Daddy Tim Sweeney, I better defend him else my Epic bussy plug will slip out!! 😱🥺 "

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

I have no argument, so instead of making one Imma call you 12. 🤓☝️

I was leaning towards "out of touch" but now it's become blatantly clear that you're just an epic fanboy.

Arch does not directly link openssh to liblzma, and thus this attack vector is not possible. You can confirm this by issuing the following command:

ldd "$(command -v sshd)"
Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Not really. It'd just skip all the incremental updates and go straight to latest.

I once updated an Arch that was 2y out of date, and it went perfectly fine.

I thought it was saying that CachyOS is an imposter Arch Linux. Like that classic horror trope where the MC approaches a person they know from behind only for that person to turn around and reveal their a monster.

My root is only ~8.9GB and I have basically all the same stuff you do. Well except for snaps, those are yucky.

Much closer, yes.
Have you heard of hackliberty & dividebyzero?

Racists? Omg. 😱 that's literally most parties in the US. Democrats have a racist history just the same. Welcome to America, all parties are racist in one way or other, because this country breeds extremism and corruption. Even liberalism has perpetuated systemic racism on several occasions despite trying to dismantle it. All the parties in the US are guilty.
Corruption runs deep, and corruption is corpo profit margins.

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

but it's true there is a lot of nuance lost when things are viewed that way.

Exactly. In truth, I hate ALL sides, ALL PARTIES , just for differing reasons. I vote for the shit I vote for, no political party has the power to sway me to be a blind follower that just accepts whatever bullshit they do. I'm very openly critical of all political parties in general, and don't really have anything good to say about any of them. They've all done shit I greatly disagree with.
