Linux market share passes 4% for first time (arstechnica.com)

We see the nearly 33-year-old OS’s market share growing 31.3 percent from June 2023, when we last reported on Linux market share, to February. Since June, Linux usage has mostly increased gradually. Overall, there's been a big leap in usage compared to five years ago. In February 2019, Linux was reportedly on 1.58 percent of...

SeaJ ,

The increase in Linux is actually from Apple. Both Linux and Windows usage increased while MacOS decreased.

SeaJ ,

Waydroid or run Bliss OS in a VM.

SeaJ ,

Novaspirit Tech did a decent video on setup. He is using Proxmox but there should be the same settings in KVM.

That's more than Mint's unlimited plan. Are you only using 3GB of data? You could switch to Mint's 5GB/month plan for $180/year which is less than half of what you pay. The speed should be similar since they are both on T-Mobile's network. It might even be better since T-Mobile owns Mint now.

SeaJ ,

Does that also work in other countries in the EU?

SeaJ ,

I have always opposed smart TVs. Most of my reasoning is because the UI is almost always dogshit slow because the hardware and software is thrown in as an afterthought. But I'll add this to my reasoning for not getting a smart TV.

A signage TV with a streaming stick/box is perfectly fine for what I need. Jellyfin does not care what I'm playing.

Edit: Also, I did not even notice that there was no option to reject this. It is just a close button. There is no way this shit is enforceable.

SeaJ ,

Will this cause all of the right wing bots to leave Twitter?

X is becoming a 'ghost town' of bots as AI-generated spam content floods the internet — A sign of the scale is the thriving industry in bot-making::The internet is filling up with machine-generated "zombie content" designed to game algorithms and scam humans. Experts call it the "great AI flood".

SeaJ ,

Didn't he claim he would be getting rid of all the bots?

SeaJ ,

They were so busy asking if they could that they never bothered to ask if they should.

SeaJ ,

And that's how you get the cube in the movie Cube.

SeaJ ,

I would say it is an okay book. It's a little too optimistic on the human side which his books all tend to be. It's worth a read though of only to give some idea of possibilities.

SeaJ ,

Everyone has a different definition of optimism. 🙂

More I meant the final outcome. I don't think the eco terrorism would be as effective or as coordinated. ELF certainly did not end up changing much in a positive way.

SeaJ ,

Half their posts are basically ads.

SeaJ ,

Ironic that he quoted the Bible since the Bible is okay with abortion.

SeaJ ,

Get a signage TV. That was my main complaint too. Mine is fairly quick since there is no OS and Spyware to load.

SeaJ ,

How about tell the dealerships and auto execs to fuck off? Up the subsidy that has not changed in 10 years.

SeaJ ,

Mozilla is making a great pivot to integrate AI into Firefox. Totally what people want. /s

SeaJ ,

My 3 year old was given a tablet in case of a snow day. No way he would be on a tablet when he could be outside playing in the snow.

SeaJ ,

His preschool did. If school is canceled because of snow, he is supposed to use it for remote learning.

SeaJ ,

It's a regular lemon party in there.

SeaJ ,

Match Group, of course, denies that its acquisition strategy hurts healthy competition in the dating app market.

I'm sure it has 45 apps just for funsies. /s

Glad I met someone when OkCupid and Tinder were not complete garbage.

SeaJ , (edited )

You could always waste your time and report them. As if that will do anything.

SeaJ ,

You know who is worth saving? People who are unable to get vaccinated. They are extremely vulnerable to things like mumps, measles, and rubella, for instance because many of them are immunocompromised.

SeaJ ,

A huge portion of our battery materials come from the Atacama Desert. There is no life at all in a lot of it.

You do know that we get most of our hydrogen from burning fossil fuels, right?

SeaJ ,

Those things are absolute garbage in terms of efficiency. They are not viable.

SeaJ ,

Going to guess this will not change their goal of 200k hydrogen vehicles by 2030. They currently have about 14k out on roads.

SeaJ ,

That's more an issue with hydrogen than it is with EVs. Hydrogen is very leaky.

SeaJ ,

That's the spirit!

SeaJ ,

Battery technology that we have today is leagues ahead of liquid hydrogen ICE vehicles. You would need a trailer full of liquid hydrogen to get decent range. But that would not matter much because you would only get a fraction of the way through that tank before having to replace the fuel pump.

Engineering Explained has a few videos on the liquid hydrogen Corolla. It is only being looked at for race cars because of how quickly liquid hydrogen boils off.

https://youtu.be/DGL5g91KwLA

https://youtu.be/vJjKwSF9gT8

While I applaud Toyota for researching this avenue, I don't expect much of it to be useful for the average commuter.

SeaJ ,

Boil off from liquid hydrogen is still an issue as of 6 months ago:

https://www.hydrogeninsight.com/innovation/solving-the-liquid-hydrogen-boil-off-problem-us-awards-48m-towards-h2-research-and-development/2-1-1522238

Rio Tinto's scientist puts the boil off of hydrogen at about 1% per day in storage tanks.

SeaJ ,

Do you have to change your fuel pump that many times when driving for 24 hours? God I hope not. Even if that is fixed, you still have the issue of horrible range unless you want to tow a trailer of liquid hydrogen.

You might want to give some actual backing up your claims. Jason Fenske at least has a mechanical engineering degree which is certainly more than any sources you have cited.

Batteries are continually dropping in price. They also generally last 200-300k miles before they are down to 80-85% capacity. The only exception with that one is the Nissan Leaf which they decided to air cool. The quicker charging will be fixed with solid state batteries in the next 2-3 years.

SeaJ ,

Range would be about 1/20th to 1/40th of that 1000 mile range you mentioned (about 50 miles with very conservative driving). The Tesla Roadster got significantly more than that and even the GM EV1 back in the 90s got more than that. That is one of the reasons they are just looking into it for racing where range is much less of a factor.

Battery breakthroughs have actually been pretty great. 10 years ago the only affordable EVs got less than 100 mile range. Now you can find affordable EVs with about 300 mile range that have even greater reliability. The Nio ES6 uses a semi-solid state battery and has a 600 mile range. Toyota will have a solid state battery out in 2026 with an even better range, lighter, and will charge up to 80% in less than 10 minutes.

You are correct that ICE is here to stay for a while but that is largely due to trucking and air travel.

I don't think you understand how electricity works. Like at all. Do you think things max out at using 1 kWh? Why 1kWh and not simply 1 Wh? Or why could they not use 1 MWh? Should I inform the power company that they are clearly billing me wrong since they claim I use over 8760 kWh per year?

Instead you should be surprised that they are consuming so much goddamn power for something that has little use.

SeaJ ,

Which part?

SeaJ ,

What the Fortinet headquarters in California is now calling a “translation problem” sounded completely different during the research: Swiss Fortinet representatives described the toothbrush case as a real DDoS at a meeting that discussed current threats...

Fortinet provided specific details: information about how long the attack took down a Swiss company’s website; an order of magnitude of how great the damage was. Fortinet did not want to reveal which company it was out of consideration for its customers.

The text was submitted to Fortinet for verification before publication. The statement that this was a real case that really happened was not objected to.

That makes me put a lot less trust in Fortinet. English is very widely spoken in Switzerland. I can't really see it bring a translation issue.

SeaJ ,

I wish I could say the same. I have had one of two that had circuits that burned out. One was cheap and not surprising. The other was a Hue. Speaking of Hues, mine all seemed to stop working with Google Home and one even decided it would permanently be disco time and continually flashes. Zigbee compatible bulbs only from now on for me.

SeaJ ,

OMG thank you. I fucking hate shorts.

SeaJ ,

YouTube constantly suggests right wing side of things. Watch a video about Captain Marvel/Brie Larsen once? Get bombarded by YouTube shorts on why she is killing the MCU. Watch something about Star Wars? Get shorts on Gina Carano talking about "woke" Disney. Doesn't matter that the political commentators that I subscribe to are progressive. Although I will admit to likely being at fault because those shorts tend to have more scantily clad versions of the characters and I am certain I look at them a split second longer while scrolling because boobs.

SeaJ ,

The problem is not the EVs. The problem is their shit infotainment systems that they force on people. But if they want to kill off their ICE vehicles and swap them with plug-in hybrids, that is fine. That will at least help people realize that they are never filling up their car with gas.

My guess is that they will be doing this at the expense of their EV line though and they will also shove their infotainment system into the PHEVs.

SeaJ ,

When they can make money off Android Auto or CarPlay, they will switch back.

SeaJ , (edited )

They sell your data. They could also inject ads into shit and force you to pay to remove them.

Better infotainment will lead to higher customer satisfaction in the long run. But many corporations are notoriously short sighted and grab for the quick and easy profits. Sure, you might be annoyed that they paywalled a feature that used to be free but you are unlikely to sell your car because of it. They already have your money from you buying the car so any extra money coming from you is icing in the cake.

SeaJ ,

Kind of. It is the aspiration for 10Gb connections. They have been using the term well before those were a possibility even in a lab.

SeaJ ,

It's getting to the point where even searching for specific products is almost pointless. I did a search for a specific phone model recently and the phone showed up as the fifth result after four prompted results and several ads. When it becomes a chore to even track down a very specific thing you want, why would I keep going back?

SeaJ ,

I can't say that I have ever gotten anything counterfeit from Amazon. What I have been victim to is no name garbage that has 4.5 stars due to thousands of fake reviews. Generally it is stuff that is difficult to research good brands and the review websites often simply redirect back to Amazon. It's also very little use leaving a bad review because Amazon will remove it. For an example, Louis Rossman bought some fuses on Amazon. The 2A fuse did not blow until 10A was passed through it. That was not a fluke either. He left bad ratings which were removed and those products continue to be sold on Amazon. That is shit easily that can start a fire. If there actually was blow back, the manufacturer would simply stop selling that named version but keep the half a dozen other identical ones up they use to flood the results. So while this may not have ever been an issue for you, it can easily get someone killed. Your conclusion is spot on. We need regulation for this garbage. While Walmart is generally seen as garbage, there is at least someone responsible for purchasing shit to put in the stores and they generally have it tested. That is not the case for Amazon or Walmart's online marketplace or AliBaba.
