Back when I was young, I waited in a hot, minimally air-conditioned government building in Tennessee. For nearly 3 hours.

I finally went to the front desk and asked if I was even supposed to be there today, as my name had not been called.

The lady at the desk asked my name, and I gave her my last name, which sounds vaguely foreign. She looked surprised, leaned forward, and whispered "Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't realize you were white!" And immediately ushered me through.

I moved out of that god-foesaken town / state months later.

As well-thought out as the answer before mine is, here's the scoop:

The Oncler in the newest adaptation was once heavily meme'd as a "Tumblr sexy-man"– an internet bad-boy that folks would write edgy fanfiction about and make thirsty art depicting them, among other things. It was era that people who had that phase look back on and cringe. It is not something that people are proud to remember about themselves.

It was clearly unintentional by OP but once they saw the resemblance, they were filled with deep regret considering the history of the Tumblr-fied-era Onceler.

So comparing OP to the Onceler is bringing up feelings of adjacent cringe, as being compared to a Tumblr-phase-animated-fanfiction-sexyboi-twink really makes your brain scream "OH PLEASE NO" if you remember "those times".

Know what tipped me off that Lemmy really doesn't get nuance?

There was an article about a ride-share / taxi company that cateted to women and provided drivers who were also women, to make them feel safer getting a ride.

The comments were absolutely venomous, calling it out as "sexism" and how "what's to stop me from identifying as a woman and calling? They can't refuse me!" which.... fuckin' oof.

But I figured out why they're upset: because they want people to be treated equally instead of acknowledging that some people have different needs that may require extra services to level the playing field.

Equality vs. Equity.

So I was once arguing with someone about single-parent households.

They brought up that having both parents in the home is the best option for the child. I argued that if one of the parents is abusive, it's in the best interest of the child to have a single-parent household instead.

They then demanded studies/sources to back up my claim, and berated me when I answered "Are you demanding that I provide scientific proof that not having an abuser in the home is best for the child?"

I just..... ugh......

My friend is a technical writer and just lost her job because "chat GPT can do what you do!"

    I'm postulating a theory as of recent, that people with ADHD, who take meds for ADHD are dependent on them, similar to addiction

    Dependence ≠ addiction.

    Diabetics do not have an insulin addiction.

    The folks who have scolded you are not doing so baselessly.

    When you have chemical deficiencies that affect your brain, people seem much more outspoken about giving their opinion about your affliction. I've heard folks saying "don't do chemo!! These people are just trying to scam you and get your money while killing you!! Maybe you should cut out all that processed food?" Hoo boy. Just.... don't.

    Compound that with folks using our already stigmatized & shortage-prone medication for fun, and it gets worse for us.

    I love finally being in control of my thoughts and finally feeling normal and able to actually pursue the things I want. But I think the desire to be in control of your functions is.... pretty sane. I don't miss the chaos that was my constantly hopscotching thoughts & unwilling body.

    I don't miss the suffering. I'm addicted to "not suffering", probably.

    My last boss told all his employees to invest in crypto, and I believe all of them put a substantial amount into it. He was a country hick who worked machine repair beside me at their shop. Thought he was hot shit because he was a member of a Facebook Q group and thought he was smarter than everyone else because he "knew secrets on a deeper level". Okay bud.

    I left before the end of the year because he stopped scheduling me over a comment I made about another one of his fucking insane conspiracy theories he liked to spout instead of helping with the workload.

    Then the crypto crash happened. They went out of business 8 months later. Can't imagine why!

    My kid is 12 and the absolute sweetest, best kid ever! He's one of the reason I'll never have another– I'm not risking my sanity with a gamble.

    The creator of these comics is a Christian, with the message of them being a Christian message/allegory.

    The message here is that if you disconnect yourself from God and try to live independent from God, you lose your purpose and/or are helpless to fulfill your "true purpose" (which, to a Christian, "true purpose" = serving/following God).

    That said: I'd strongly suggest that people stop posting these comics and giving this guy attention. They're meant for Christians and are not really relevant to people outside of that.

    I've noticed that a lot of men don't know what "natural" even looks like.

    They'll see a woman with foundation, concealer, highlighter, setting, and mascara on and be like "Wow natural beauty. No makeup."

    A lot goes into makeup that isn't just lipstick & eyeliner.
