The one that's going to slowly escalate towards incredible pleasure is clearly superior.

There's very little as satisfying as slipping into a newly tailored suit and looking amazing. Plus it's nice to be cared for by an attentive professional like a tailor perfecting your clothing. No kink-shaming here, but I'll pass on getting stepped on.

The legend is that a foot is actually based of the length of King Henry I's foot. "Imagine two neighbouring farmers, one buying a field from another, one with huge feet, one with tiny. Each measures the field in feet, but one says the footage is less because he’s got a bigger footprint, and therefore he argues a lower price. It’s a recipe for a mighty mediaeval punchup. So Henry proffered his own royal foot, it’s said. Thus, a foot became 12 inches."

I made a post with a lot of sources about horrific Israeli treatment of prisoners in the comments of this thread about a doctor detailing abuse in the prison he worked in. I won't copy/paste, just say the TL:DR is that for over a decade Israel has detained without charge/trial, systematically tortured, and even raped Palestinian prisoners (including minors). They coerce confessions from these children and adults by using all of those methods.

If you want evidence for those allegations, I tried to keep that linked post to a 2-minute read and include only what is confirmed by credible sources.

It's disgusting. $56 billion is enough to make someone the 18th richest person in America, and richer than some of the richest whole families. 14,000 people have just had their jobs taken away through no fault of their own, the latest in what feels like a constant stream of large layoffs in multiple industries.

Look at how close Musk is to losing #1 in America - Musk is hemorrhaging money (mostly via Twitter) and others are catching up. If this is being driven by a narcissistic need to hold onto #1 it would make this ridiculous payout even more senseless.

"Woman" is hilarious to define as an agenda - like there's no clarification required to toss half of humanity under the bus. So I watched the video (I don't know Coney, but it's just him making fun of this insane preacher) and it's essentially that bad. The preacher says, and I quote, "She's headstrong and stubborn, constantly arguing with Ash. Typical woman" then laughs and apologizes but never says anything else about her. The mental athletics involved in the preacher's conclusions would make him a master of any gym.

That's the face I made about a week into trading Reddit participation in for Lemmy participation or just break-from-social-media time. Conversations feel more genuine, there's less overbearing moderation (at least in my experience), and if there's nothing new on Lemmy I've probably spent enough time reading forums anyways. I'm only keeping my 13-year-old Reddit account to keep track of old favorited posts and specialist forums like specific video game tips.

It always breaks my heart when I see the videos of children shaking with shock and stress following an Israeli airstrike. I won't share any because some people aren't in a good frame of mind to be so starkly reminded of how awful humans can be, but I've seen multiple ones. What is also frustrating is that these tragedies set the stage for new cycles of violence. You can't traumatize whole generations of people into loving your country.

Israel reports minor damage to military base after ‘limited number’ of Iran missiles fall on its territory – live (www.theguardian.com)

IDF spokesperson says total number of ‘aerial units’ launched by Iran numbered about 200; attack comes nearly two weeks after Israeli strike in Damascus killed top Iranian commander...

GrymEdm ,
@GrymEdm@lemmy.world avatar

Are you arguing that Iran should have tried harder? They explicitly said the attack was meant to show they will respond to actions like Israel's bombing of their embassy in Syria, and have now stated they consider the attack is concluded. Israel has already given their security council the go-ahead to respond so they don't need to get any further approval for whatever they decide. We'll see if Israel chooses to keep on escalating.

GrymEdm ,
@GrymEdm@lemmy.world avatar

You mean like Israel used diplomacy when it bombed the Iranian embassy, literally the most undiplomatic thing you can do?

As far as spending money on improving people's lives, that's great advice but it's also terribly hypocritical coming from (I assume) a US point of view. The US should stop spending the many, many billions of dollars sent to Israel to kill dirt-poor oppressed innocents and improve the lives of their own citizens. Then there would be no need to institutionally violate human rights like in the case of forced prison labor which earns Alabama alone 450 million a year and is just legalized slavery. I mean, literally just yesterday it was reported that Florida signed a law prohibiting worker protections from overheating in spite of the fact that overheating deaths are setting new records every year now. So while there's undeniably merit to the idea that money should go to improving lives, as far as your criticism that Iran doesn't: those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

"Ground-breaking new study discovers that being loved makes people happier". I understand why it's important to formalize results like this so you have data to inform policy etc, but man...it's like reading a study about how the sun is quite warm. Parents who won't support their kids without being told to do so have some foundational family problems to sort out.

GrymEdm ,
@GrymEdm@lemmy.world avatar

I'm of the opinion that as long as you aren't hurting yourself or others without consent, do what you want to. The consent thing is important because people will play contact or combat sports, do BDSM stuff, etc. - so long as it's informed go nuts. It's also important because some people can't give informed consent, e.g. kids can't agree to underage sex because they don't know about the harms and are more vulnerable to manipulation.

A couple of years ago I watched a doctor review a video of someone who likes having sex with balloons. The doctor said he would only diagnose that behavior as a problem or illness if it was hurting him or others around him. His argument was if there's no harm and it makes that person happier then what really is the problem? I was initially taken aback because it's weird right? But after some thought it really made sense to me - just because I don't relate doesn't make something bad. I don't have to want to do it myself - there's room in life for multiple (non-harmful) preferences.

    How about we just avoid the long arguments and jump to the end:

    • Pro-Biden: Biden is only a war criminal. Trump will actually ruin the USA while being no better (or even worse) internationally. It's a loss for no gain. If Trump wins I'm going to blame anyone who voted 3rd party or didn't vote. We need people to vote Biden regardless of their ethical/financial concerns about the billions being sent abroad and how they are being used. It's that important to stop Trump and MAGA.
    • Anti-Biden and also Anti-Trump: Democrats never meaningfully change to court any voters left of center. Every 4 years they bank on their Republican opponent being so awful that it scares people into voting Dem because "it's the most important election ever". Biden has crossed the line by participating in Israeli crimes in spite of most Americans wanting otherwise. If he loses you should blame his policy and Democrat apathy to our concerns instead of us - we're sick of having to support the lesser evil. Threatening to vote 3rd party or withholding our vote is the only way left to meaningfully demand change and proper representation of deeply important concerns.
    • Pro-Trump: Popcorn time while we watch libs argue and vote for our (literally painted) golden leader to "restore" an impossibly perfect past that never existed. Even if he acts like a dictator for a while sometimes that's what is needed.

    There. After so many of these threads I can near guarantee 90%+ will fall roughly into those categories.

    Biden is so outraged that just in the last few days he's promised the sale/transfer of tens billions of dollars worth of F-35s, F-15s, and huge bombs for Israel. His talk of grief and anger is cheap political theater to save his presidential bid and anyone who actually believes him is wilfully blinding themselves. What he actually does, which is the only thing that counts, is continue to enable nation-level war crimes.

    Link to the article the image is from since I don't know how to internet well enough to make the image expandable. TL:DR genetics/biology show it's complex and there are many intersex possibilities on and the gender spectrum.

    For what it's worth thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. Given that this whole post is about trans folks I think sex, sexuality, and gender are all applicable topics (with gender spectrum focal when talking about trans). I do understand the difference. To defend the person who wants clarification, perhaps I could have framed it better and I'll change it to "and the gender spectrum" instead of "on the gender spectrum". It's one word and what is meant is pretty apparent to anyone who reads the article or looks at the expanded graphic - which addresses concepts of sex, sexuality, and gender and explicitly uses the term "gender spectrum" when talking about trans choices/identity.

    @GrymEdm@lemmy.world avatar

    To people who aren't sure if this should be illegal or what the big deal is: according to Harvard clinical psychiatrist and instructor Dr. Alok Kanojia (aka Dr. K from HealthyGamerGG), once non-consensual pornography (which deepfakes are classified as) is made public over half of people involved will have the urge to kill themselves. There's also extreme risk of feeling depressed, angry, anxiety, etc. The analogy given is it's like watching video the next day of yourself undergoing sex without consent as if you'd been drugged.

    I'll admit I used to look at celeb deepfakes, but once I saw that video I stopped immediately and avoid it as much as I possibly can. I believe porn can be done correctly with participant protection and respect. Regarding deepfakes/revenge porn though that statistic about suicidal ideation puts it outside of healthy or ethical. Obviously I can't make that decision for others or purge the internet, but the fact that there's such regular and extreme harm for the (what I now know are) victims of non-consensual porn makes it personally immoral. Not because of religion or society but because I want my entertainment to be at minimum consensual and hopefully fun and exciting, not killing people or ruining their happiness.

    I get that people say this is the new normal, but it's already resulted in trauma and will almost certainly continue to do so. Maybe even get worse as the deepfakes get more realistic.

    Well, IQ scores rise over time. Smarter people realize how dumb it is to directly kill, or pay tons for the killing of, dirt poor civilians on the other side of the world. Especially for profits most of them will never, ever see.

    Edit: I shouldn't make it sound as if the soldiers of WW2 were dumb though. As another comment correctly pointed out, there's a lot of difference between WW2 and at least some modern wars.
