I want to be a Camus but most days I'm a Cioran.

Stovetop ,

They're sold for scrap. Just gotta go to a scrapyard and say "There was something wrong with mine, I replaced it, here's the old one I'm selling for scrap."

That or extract the previous metals yourself and sell them directly.

Stovetop ,

Some nicknames do a consonant shift for the first letter, like William > Will > Willy > Billy

Margaret > Meg > Meggy > Peggy

Stovetop ,

Tech news tells me that this measure ended up getting postponed. Not defeated, just postponed.

I'm sure it'll end up back on the table when they think it has a better chance of passing.

Stovetop ,

Not great if you are also trying to de-Google, though.

Stovetop ,

This used to be me when I used to work at a grocery store and I would go on break.

Then I learned how much sugar the industrially produced loaves that pass for baguettes in the US contain.

Ignorance is truly bliss. And about 1300 calories.

Stovetop ,

I am assuming it may be related to a couple prominent news stories.

There was computer scientist Lynn Conway passing away recently, and in the thread for this article, there was some concern about the LA times author opting to use male pronouns to refer to Lynn pre-transition.

Then there was the other recent news of Lia Thomas being barred from participation in the Olympics, and any time there's a discussion about trans athletes in sports, it invites a whole lot of yikes.

Lemmy.world is the normie instance. Unsurprisingly, a lot of normies have bad opinions. If you run into transphobes, feel free to tell them what every transphobe needs to hear: "Go fuck yourself". Or block 'em and let them scream at a wall. It's good to nip bigotry in the bud before it grows, but it's also not worth letting people with hate in their hearts take up space in your mind's temple.

Lynn Conway, leading computer scientist and transgender pioneer, dies at 85 (www.latimes.com)

I have mixed feelings on the pronoun use, but having read some of her autobiographical writing I don't think she would have taken much issue with it. This piece is more focused on her work in computer engineering, so I felt it was appropriate to post here.

Stovetop , (edited )

A lot of trans people would disagree. Just because someone was forced to conform to their biological sex for years doesn't mean they felt that way on the inside.

Every trans person I know, without exception, prefers to refer to their pre-transition selves by their current pronouns and would take issue with the suggestion that they were still a boy/girl before becoming a girl/boy.

Stovetop ,

Hah, got me there on a technicality.

An example though would be one friend I have who was telling me recently about a story from back when we were in high school. When quoting someone who was talking about her, she chose to use her current pronouns and current name even though realistically those wouldn't have been used at that time. Even if it's less "accurate" in a historical context, it's a positive affirmation to be able to say "this is who I have always been, even if I couldn't share it publicly at the time."

And it also helps those in the present who may have never known her back then and might wonder who she was referring to. A bit like how one might talk about the childhood of Lady Gaga and not the childhood of Stefani Germanotta.

Stovetop ,

It's sad that this has basically become a standard. Subscribe to a service, but then you have to pay extra on top of that to not see ads. Are we now supposed to be grateful that products and services we already pay for aren't trying to bleed us for every cent they can get?

Stovetop ,

Finally Apple is ready to use all that training data they say they don't collect.

Stovetop ,

Yeah, the cover protects anything that the phone falls on.

Stovetop ,

It's like cars. A lot of people drive them every day. Not as many people know how they work or how to fix them.

If someone spends their entire life studying medicine or law or art, etc., or any other trade that has nothing to do with their computer OS, I don't blame them for simply not having any remaining brain space to support an entire new set of skills just to maintain their computer when they are used to Windows or MacOS doing everything for them.

Stovetop ,

I am prepared to hide under a rock after this comment, but...

Linux even powers the most widely-used consumer OS in the world. It just happens to take the form of Android.

Stovetop ,

Holy crap, I took a look at the following passages in the source linked by OP and you weren't kidding.

"That Jew is a devil; he has stolen away my heart from my breast—he has butchered my only companion, and I presume, too, that he has eaten him. A certain son of the devil, a Jew of French birth, I neither know nor am acquainted with; that Jew gave my comrade letters of his death-warrant to that man. To this city he came, induced, or rather seduced. He often gave attendance upon this Jew, and in his house he was last seen."

The text accuses the Jewish community of cannibalism during Passover, with the note apparently being a message to kill and eat the bearer. Gotta keep drumming up that religious hysteria or else people might start seeing Jews as humans.

Red bean is a staple of many Chinese desserts and it tastes sweet on its own. It makes for a good dairy-free popsicle and is quite common in China.

Vanilla and chocolate are made using beans as well; other than the fact that you can make red bean into paste and eat it as-is or frozen without milk or added sugar, it's not that crazy a concept.

Stovetop ,

"Windows, stop syncing my damn files to OneDrive."

"Copy that, no more syncing. Just give us a moment to delete the unnecessary copies."

"Great."

"Ok, all done. All the local data is gone and now only the OneDrive backup exists."

"Wait no stop"

Stovetop ,

Love the Blahaj, glad it had a friend.

Fuck Oracle though.

Stovetop ,

"Pwease give us access to your contacts UwU. We wanna find ur friends. All of them."

Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

It's a sad state of affairs modern schools have when an instructor tries to pull up a video on YouTube or other sites to use in class, and an entire classroom of children have to sit through the unskippable ads.

I guess I'll take that over the TV documentaries my teachers used to record on VHS that had commercials to fast forward through, but the modern internet truly sucks.

Conservative critical thinking skills are low, so the basic logic is that New York, as a reliable blue state, must therefore be under Biden's control.

Much of the Republican worldview is based on projection, so part of that assumption is that Biden controls an army of loyalists just like Trump does. To Republicans, New York may as well be Mordor.

Stovetop ,

The Holodomor was a myth. As if a socialist regime would intentionally starve millions of people!

Disclaimer: famines can and do happen under capitalism, even intentionally (e.g. Ireland) but at least there's no widespread denialism like you see when they occur under ostensibly socialist regimes. And if they are acknowledged, then the debate switches to whether or not the country is truly socialist, or somehow this is still capitalism's fault.

Stovetop ,

Looking at the federated/defederated instances on lemmy.cafe linked higher up in this thread, it looks like lemmy.cafe is defederated from lemmy.ml, but I imagine it is not the other way around.

You can see OP's content but they can't see your comment, basically.

Stovetop ,

The US officially uses the metric system...to define the US customary system of measurements.

E.g. 1 foot is defined as 0.3048 meters.

Stovetop ,

Well, milk is still sold by the gallon, butter is still divided into tablespoons, nutrition facts are still defaulted to cups and ounces. Wood is still sold by the foot or yard, cars still measure speed in miles per gallon, people still know their height and weight in feet and inches and pounds.

Could be worse but could be a lot better, too.

Stovetop ,

Sorry I totally meant fuel efficiency there, brain fart.

Stovetop , (edited )

Amoral for sure, but evil is relative I guess. A company can be both amoral and good when it is convenient to be.

Basically corporations are never your friend, but they can be less terrible if there is financial incentive. If this hurts their bottom line, they'll backtrack.

...but that assumes capitalism would provide the financial incentive to be less terrible in the first place.

Stovetop ,

They care enough to buy a shirt at least. What that tells me is that they care a lot about offending as many people as possible.

Stovetop , (edited )

I may be missing information, but I thought the only major change recently was that non-compete agreements were made effectively illegal, but I don't believe there was anything that affected non-disclosure agreements and non-disparagement agreements.

Stovetop ,

And there's thankfully usually a popular indie darling of the season to do that. Valheim, Vampire Survivors, Lethal Company, Among Us, Dave the Diver, etc. etc.

Something unique that can be easily streamed in most cases.

Stovetop ,

And just like their ridiculous chat apps, they have no beneficial feature integration or consolidation between the two.

Google Maps has the ability to report speed traps and hazards, but none of that data comes from Waze or vice-versa.

Stovetop ,

The more self-sufficient you can be, the fewer societal resources you will take up, which could then go to someone else in greater need. That's my perspective at least.

The organization I work for is all about helping people get back on their feet, and while I would never want to tell someone they should be more self-sufficient and rely less on us, there's no denying that our resources are already stretched thin. At times, it forces us to prioritize those with the greatest need, even when others still need help.

Stovetop ,

I wouldn't dismiss the concerns of overpopulation entirely. Simple math tells us that, unless we are able to create a society with infinite resources (i.e. post-scarcity), it will always be necessary to make sure our rate of consumption is less than the rate of replacement.

So far, we are losing that battle, given the significant amount of non-renewable resources we consume at a global scale. On top of that, unchecked development which is needed to ensure that the needs of massively overpopulated regions are met endangers what few natural/renewable resources remain, which carries the threat of food scarcity, loss of drinking water, and permanent environmental damage on ecosystems that we depend on.

Stovetop ,

Out of risk of doxxing myself, I don't want to give too much information, but specifically we work to help set up immigrants and refugees with housing, healthcare, education, and other resources, so I am not sure if it necessarily applies to your circumstances. Though my particular role is not that glamorous, I just maintain the infrastructure.

If you're in the US, you can often dial 211 (depending on your city) to get connected with various resources depending on need, or crisis lifelines in an emergency. Local and state governments will also often host sites or portals with access to various social services they offer. Sometimes even a 211 website for both at once.

In emergencies, hospitals will also always be able to help, but keep in mind a lot of their services are not free. Ask up front if various consults/appointments come with a charge before you end up with a bill. But even if they're unable to provide anything directly without charge, they can often still put you in contact with services they contract with, such as social workers or community wellness representatives, who may be able to provide free help depending on your circumstances.

I've heard even just popping over to public institutions like town hall or the local library (but not schools, avoid schools if you look homeless) can be a helpful place to start to get familiar with resources in the community.

Stovetop ,

That is a good point, but I would consider resources needed to maintain stability versus resources needed to achieve stability. Metaphorically, it's easy to stand on top of a mountain, but it's a lot harder to climb it from the bottom. And the mountain gets taller the longer you wait.

Once you're at the top, you can lend a hand to the people still making the climb without worrying about being pulled back down.

Stovetop ,

TIL that Word is supposed to support Ctrl+Shift+V starting last year. My work-provided Office 365 version of the app definitely still does not.

I had already disabled the option to paste source format by default, but I am glad that this will hopefully reduce the frequency of surprise font changes from my tech-illiterate coworkers in documents they send.

Stovetop ,

My company is planning to upgrade to Win11 soon, and we are one of the larger employers in the region. I imagine there may be many other companies following suit as Windows 10 ages more.

Stovetop ,

I'm thinking the fact that there is nothing on the fork but half a cherry tomato perched precariously.

China is quickly becoming the new dominant colonial power in Africa.
