Opts out?

Look, if we’re going to have draconian copyright laws, then we should at least be able to count on works being used without permission for AI to be verboten like all the other uses.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

What are the most private social media platforms?

I've been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

So yeah, hardware is hard. But there are a lot of passionate people working on making it more accessible and transparent, tearing down the walls around technical secrecy. We’ve been saying it for years: Your devices don’t have to be incomprehensible, you don’t need to be a certified expert to figure out how it works. Understanding empowers tinkering and we need more tinkerers.

Direct Action - Utah Phillips (youtu.be)

This is one of my favorites. Utah was a huge fan of this idea he called "the long memory". The long memory is the idea that as long as we know where our movement comes from, we'll have the knowledge to combat both new and old tactics meant to divide us. This song describes the true story of labor conditions and direct action in...

I think NUC’s internal drive can be upgraded.

USB drive would be fast enough for anything going out to or coming from the Internet.

NAS is a cheap(ish) way to get lots of storage.

I wouldn’t attach storage to my router for the use you’re describing.

    And more competition.

    It’s a sneaky way of having a bandwidth cap without having a bandwidth cap. Mobile devices have smaller storage, so you’re less likely to use as much bandwidth compared to a laptop. Also a single device going to use less data than multiple devices sharing a hotspot.

    But most users don’t. And that’s what they’re counting on.

    That soldier is kneeling for religion, not a fallen peer.

    Zachariah ,
    @Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

    People kneel to pray for all sorts of things.

    Zachariah ,
    @Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

    A cross can be a grave marker, but so can a tombstone. The phrase is “I kneel for the cross.” The cross symbolizes a religion, not dead people.

    The whole saying, “I stand for the flag. I kneel for the cross,” is used by many more people than just soldiers.

    @Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

    The argument was made that the kneeling was for a fallen soldier. I don’t think that interpretation is correct. You, too, seem to agree that that’s not the only reason to kneel for the cross.

    Edit: Upon a bit more reflection, this particular graphic for this saying could mean a dead soldier since it’s a soldier praying. And crosses are sometimes used for soldiers’ grave markers. But not always. And you can find soldiers praying in front of other crosses. And soldiers don’t pray only for the dead when kneeling before a cross. I’d have to ask the artist her intentions.

    It could be a soldier praying for a safe tour.

    But see my edit. If the artist meant it to be a fallen soldier as the reason, I could believe it. I don’t think it’s the only possibility though.

    I wrote “for” not “to”

    I meant, it’s a religious gesture.

    Good article as usual from Cory Doctorow. I was very surprised by the title, but reading what happened made more sense.

    I had something similar happen while job hunting. I didn’t give away any useful info before I caught on, but it was a combo of two factors that caught me with my shields down:
    • I was using my phone instead of my desktop, so it didn’t show the email address (just the person’s name)
    • I had never heard of a recruiting scam before

    I’m not sure, but I figure they’d have asked for my direct deposit info when I was “hired” and then use that to steal money.

    I really liked Glassdoor when I first used them to find out salaries. Since “pivoting” and adding the fishbowls or whatever, the site has been unpleasant to use. Reason this users experience makes me sick. I just deleted my account even though I doubt it’ll make a difference. Maybe something decentralized or open source will come along to take its place. Or maybe more laws can be passed to require listing salaries on job listings.

    Reddit seems to think this guide is bogus.

    Zachariah ,
    @Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

    It took me a way too long to actually read the whole thing or realize which community this was posted to. That said, those who run Reddit probably and unfortunately still would think the guide is bogus.
