I happily pay for my email service from Proton to compensate for all the data mining they AREN'T doing to me

buttfarts ,

I hope the fediverse attracts enough adoption to make it long term viable. I am making an effort to be here more than there for lemmy/Reddit but YouTube is still harder to quit

buttfarts ,

When I first got to Reddit a front page post was like 1000 upvotes so Lemmy is approximately sorta the same level of users as when I first got to Reddit

I've had like three primary email accounts since the dawn of the popular internet in the 90's

The first was Hotmail because that was a big deal at the time.

The second was google because the interface was slick and it came with (what was at the time) a lot of free storage.

The third is protonmail specifically because after decade+ on Google I realized they pretty much have the keys to the kingdom on my life's data. All my personal relationships and business being filtered through their inbox for a long-ass time. Just because they "know me" inside out for a significant part of my life doesn't mean I gotta just keep feeding them data indefinitely.

buttfarts ,

Protonmail is fine for searching old emails and they have their own calendar integration. I self host calDAV for my own calendar so I cannot comment on protonmail's other cloud services but I'm happy enough with their email service that I subscribe yearly for it.

That's the downside of not getting data mined, you need to pay for these services. Setting up a private cloud is not impossible for a derp like me but a private email server is definitely well beyond my skillset so that's something I pay for.

My 'tism brings all the 'tards to the yard

Me and my friends were all the 1980's definition of retarded. We all informed each other of this fact constantly. You know who was never ever called retarded??? The kids with learning disabilities. They never got that label because it was always used to refer to hyperactive dumbass sugar junkies causing needless mayhem while hurting themselves in the process. Those were the "retards" as per the common usage at the time.

Aradix Retard

Sounds like a Harry Potter spell

I am debating mint vs arch. It's been a minute since I fucked around with arch. Dunno if I want to "get into it" with arch or just do a plug'n play distro and take it from there.

I need to gtfo before Win 11 comes crashing down on my life.

OP is the type of insufferable gatekeeper forum troll that makes people hate switching to Linux because they end up just being a firehose of smug opinionated negativity towards everyone about it all the time.

buttfarts ,

Some try-hard wants to reinvent the wheel to show what a cutting-edge "disruptor" they can be, but they only succeed in making a shittier version of an already extant product

buttfarts ,

Personally I would enjoy spending $100k+ to get to be the beta tester for a half-baked product

buttfarts ,

pffft good luck getting my brain organoids to do your bidding... I am deeply tarded

"Well this one has clearly been returned"

Is there a vegan option that still supports animal cruelty? I don't mind giving up meat but I need to know that all of gods creatures will still suffer from the Dominion of mankind

buttfarts ,

They give me gas

Literally just gave up brave for Firefox two weeks ago just for that reason even though brave isn't supposedly gonna be affected. I have no doubt Google might deliberately just break chromium one day once and for all.

buttfarts ,

I am also an on/off Linux user since Debian. Windows 10 has been fine for me and I would live here forever in the blissful ignorance of OS apathy but when support for it stops in 2025 and I am force marched into the Windows 11 I may jump ship and run off into the wilds of Linux again.

If 10% of newb questions were just answered plainly in forums then google would index those and these easy solutions would be actually google-able. Nerds gatekeeping basic info by forcing people deep into man pages to find the needle in the haystack argument that is used for 99% of commands surrounded by a bajillion arguments that are basically dev-tools used for bash scripts make adopting to a CLI mega frustrating.

Most forum advice is about obscure driver issues for some random piece of hardware or "help! update broke my shit" type of posts.

Arch has the best documentation. Most documentation is either too dumbed down or too advanced. Arch documentation splits the difference and gives you basic information along with general context that opens your curiousity about other aspects of the system without overwhelming you.

If you pull on a thread you want to find a rope instead of getting blasted with a firehose.

I have three VMs running concurrently on a decade+ old Dell T7500.

Even elderly enterprise stuff can do this.
