How long before Google ends up on killedbygoogle.com?

darkphotonstudio ,

I wasn't aware of this search engine. Thanks!

darkphotonstudio ,

These people just need to stop. We don't need yet another social media service

darkphotonstudio ,

Small businesses that can’t afford a dedicated IT department and pro licenses are gonna love this. I’m sure Linux will pick up more users but the real winner will likely be Apple and Macs.

darkphotonstudio ,

That kind of depends on the business, doesn’t it? I’m sure there are plenty of small businesses that don’t even know what a SMB consulting space is. I suspect there a lot of people running businesses off their laptop. You might have a narrow view of what constitutes a small business.

darkphotonstudio ,

When you want to paint left-leaning people as violent, tell them they have no choice.

darkphotonstudio ,

Unless everyone stops using Google, trying to stop this is like fighting windmills.

darkphotonstudio ,

Yeah, it couldn’t possibly be because they’re a bunch of bigots in a delusional cult violating TOS agreements and generally being shitty people.

darkphotonstudio ,

That guy is a moron. Seriously, he's not very smart and no one should listen to anything he says.

darkphotonstudio ,

I'd be interested if it was a proper application. But it's a web app.

darkphotonstudio ,

Until it goes offline for whatever reason after a few years. Then you're fucked. If it's in the cloud, it's on someone else's computer.

darkphotonstudio ,

This shit is so mental, I don't know where they get these weird ass ideas about traditional wives. If you're old enough, you will have had grandparents that lived through most the 20th century, including the mythical 1950s these loons are so fixated on. My grandparents on my dad's side where "traditional" in that my grandfather was the bread-winner and my grandmother was the stay at home wife. She wasn't a feminist by any stretch. Do you know who was in charge? It wasn't the one wearing the pants. They stayed together until my grandfather died.

On my mom's side of the family, that grandfather was an abusive drunk and they eventually got divorced. Being an abusive fuck head has nothing to do with "proper" traditional families. Have they ever seen a healthy relationship? These people are living in a delusion.

darkphotonstudio ,

They are discussing a very specific approach and a paper that lays out the issues with pursuing this one specific type of generative AI. It's not about AI in general. The headline is a bit click-baity.

darkphotonstudio ,

Just ignore this clown and his bullshit. Stop reporting on him and his companies, it'll drive him nuts.

darkphotonstudio ,

I'm not going to bother reading the empty headed thoughts of yet another techbro billionaire. I'd rather do just about anything else, like watch paint dry or grass grow, a far more productive use of my time.

darkphotonstudio ,

I've heard rocks bounce around in an empty, echo-y space in the past.

darkphotonstudio ,

I hope this is AI generated and not something someone actually took time to draw.

darkphotonstudio ,

I would be making a huge mistake if I didn’t bring this up. A significant portion of the Nostr community loves Bitcoin, and many clients implement NIP-57 to hook into the Bitcoin Lightning Network.

Fuck no.

darkphotonstudio ,

I'm seriously wondering. All these billionaire types seem to be getting a taste for attention and can't help shouting crazy bullshit at the top of their lungs. The louder these people are, the more scrutiny they will receive. Do they believe that will end well for them?

I don’t think I’m saying anything new here, but if the free software is superior, then it’s easier to make the argument to try it out. If it just has similar functionality, then there’s little incentive to move over. A good example is GIMP being presented as an alternative to Photoshop. It’s not. Not even close. And I hate Adobe and refuse to pay for their crap. Even price isn’t enough. If your job/business depends on a piece of software that cost a lot of moolah Vs. an unknown free application, the free software loses. So you need a superior application plus an easy way to migrate all your data.

Krita rocks! It's amazing if you're a freehand artist. I think the brush engine is better than PS. Krita is also fast and can handle large images with multiple layers with no problems.

darkphotonstudio ,

Where was all that outrage from you all when everyone was downloading and pirating copyrighted music by groups like Metallica? If you were around back then, my guess is, you were all firing up Kazaa and Napster and didn’t give a shit.

darkphotonstudio ,

AI can’t kill the World Wide Web, capitalism already did.

darkphotonstudio , (edited )

This! Mobile operating systems are trash, and there's no good reason for it. I always see people parroting the same nonsense, "you have the power of a super computer in your pocket". Okay, then why can't I use it like a supercomputer? It's all crippled toy versions of the desktop applications, social media garbage, or microtransaction stuffed toilet games.

darkphotonstudio ,

I should be able to use it like a proper computer that can run full-fat applications, with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. Everyone loves to go on about how powerful phones are, so then why can’t I use that power?

darkphotonstudio ,

Reddit is a lost cause. Even without ads, it's clear that Reddit management is pushing a lot of mindless junk to the front page. It didn't used to have so many moronic and fake AITAH and AskReddit posts (which in turn are posted by bots or paid posters) at the top. The whole thing is a steaming pile but people who've spent years on the site don't want to give it up.

darkphotonstudio ,

YouTube is getting really bad, so it's difficult to blame them for leaving. I guess many people are oblivious to YouTube's enshittification. However, as far as I know, most of Nebula's creators are still on YouTube, and they have way more videos, so I'm not sure how these guys think this is going to work out. It will almost certainly arrest any growth they had.

darkphotonstudio ,

Yes, we need more artists defending capitalism with futile, annoying, and inaffective attempts at DRM. I guess we didn't learn anything from the music DRM wars in the 00s.

darkphotonstudio ,

Boring. We all know what a shit show it is. This guy is a little late. I wish it would just die and Melon would fly away to Mars. I'm sick of hearing about it.

darkphotonstudio ,

Not one of his better articles. A lot of prevaricating with very little substance or conclusions. While AI investment is most certainly a bubble, few are taking into account the technology improving. This is a bone the tech dogs aren't going to give up easily. They have a whiff of the possibility of AIG becoming a reality. Like all promising tech, the potential for long term damage is as, if not more so, catastrophic for society as the World Wide Web and social media. He's looking at this as an echo of past Silicone Valley bubbles. It so much more than that.

darkphotonstudio ,

I didn't say anything about a grand vision. And this has little to no connection to NFTs, other than the usual hyped tech investors.

Citation-fucking-needed.

That's my opinion. You don't have to agree. You also don't have to be obnoxious.

darkphotonstudio ,

Throwing billions at a problem to save a few millions just isn’t worth it.

When did that ever stop Silicone Valley investors?

darkphotonstudio ,

Anyone taking bets on how long before we find out some shitty thing Proton is doing that completely undermines it's supposed privacy?

darkphotonstudio ,

However, they are monopolies, and should be treated as such.

darkphotonstudio ,

It's not surprising. Don't use their platform.

darkphotonstudio ,

Cory Doctorow is a smart guy, and has some great takes. But he also pays for Xitter Blue (or whatever they call it) so do with that info what you will.

darkphotonstudio , (edited )

The way I read it on his blog, it seemed he was paying for it. It's entirely possible I misunderstood. I didn't know what his Xitter handle is, I haven't use that site in years.

darkphotonstudio ,

Why? Streaming has become a scam and everyone seems okay with it. Like everything online. Everything is an expensive subscription to rent entertainment. My suggestion? Buy CDs. Buy directly from the artists. Or pirate it, at least Spotify won't make any money from it.

darkphotonstudio ,

So you care more about yourself and Spotify than the artists who give you hours and hours of entertainment. Cool.

darkphotonstudio ,

It's not even worth indie and small artists time to put it on there. Spotify has now officially demonetised all songs with less than 1,000 streams: https://www.nme.com/news/music/spotify-has-now-officially-demonetised-all-songs-with-less-than-1000-streams-3614010

darkphotonstudio ,

It's a scam for artists. They make a pittance. Meanwhile, Spotify is raking it in. It may be an amazing deal for you, but musicians are making nothing from it.

darkphotonstudio ,

I'm familiar. I have some tracks on there. I do metal though, and I have no clue when they actually play it.
