Spotify is making bank on musicians who get jack squat in return. Don't use Spotify.

darkphotonstudio ,

Amazon used the high tech process of having low paid cashiers that are hidden in another country. Amazon sucks so much.

darkphotonstudio ,

If you buy a game, you should be able to do whatever you want with it.

darkphotonstudio ,

If you sell it, don't expect people to abide by your wishes.

darkphotonstudio ,

Agree. Just try Mint. It’s a solid choice.

darkphotonstudio ,

I think we need to separate "social media" from "giant corporation social media". News groups were "social media". Bulletin boards are as well. It's clear the damage being done is from Meta, TikTok, etc. so maybe instead of banning, everybody sue them for damages. And taxes. Hit them where it hurts, the pocketbook.

darkphotonstudio ,

I don't believe there are hoards of people. They are paid trolls. While there may be a few who are that stupid, I suspect only a few actual humans are running bots and multiple accounts. Ban them.

darkphotonstudio ,

I'm so sick of US politics and their tech bros, and crazy bullshit.

darkphotonstudio ,

AI doesn't have to be good, it only needs to be good enough. Even if it's just barely functional, if it's cheaper than paying a human, then it will be used by capitalists.

darkphotonstudio ,

I remember when Google was the cool new kid on the block. How far they've fallen. But that's what unrestrained, unregulated capitalism gets you. It's all a race to the bottom.

darkphotonstudio ,

Regulation would certainly help, considering the USA has basically given up on it. They don't even try.

darkphotonstudio ,

Subscriptions, here we come! You can't trust any commercial software company.

darkphotonstudio ,

Small businesses employ more people than large corporations, last time I checked.

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn't always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

Reaper DAW, and I have no plans on replacing because I like it. Also Reason, which I do have plans on replacing, but with what I haven't a clue. Unfortunately, audio continues to lag way behind on Linux and open source. Additionally, VST is unfortunately THE standard for audio plugins, and they are indispensable in audio production.

Tobacco mixed with cannabis seems like a good way to ruin quality weed.

Neoliberal adaptation (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

If the Twitter/X thing teaches you one thing, let it be this: Twitter was a neoliberal place. Then Elon Musk made it into X, a fascist place. Once again, neoliberalism laid the foundations of fascism. But that’s not the (whole) lesson… Neoliberal folks are still using X, calling it Twitter to make themselves feel better, and...

How are social democrats confused?

darkphotonstudio ,

Ah ok, I understand what you mean. Thank you for clarifying. :)

darkphotonstudio ,

It would be nice if the people who post these comics would give credit to the artist.

darkphotonstudio ,

Debatable, especially with AI spambots and (mechanical) turks. How do you know? You could be chatting with a bot or some poor, low paid schlub working in a digital sweatshop somewhere in Asia.

darkphotonstudio ,

Just manually trace it using your mouse. It'll take like 5 minutes, at most.

darkphotonstudio ,

Let's just go back to IRC and XMPP. The modern "chat" landscape is dismal.

darkphotonstudio ,

Yay, that one shitty billionaire is winning against the other shitty billionaire! As you can tell, I'm super invested in which of my favourite shitty billionaires is successful.

That page is broken. It won't load properly for me on Firefox.

Who is this cartoonist? Do they have a website?

Looking for FOSS WYSIWYG HTML editor

I'm making this request on behalf of a community I'm part of, which has some fairly specific requirements that we're struggling to fill. Basically, we're an art and writing group that makes extensive use of building our own old-school webpages (almost exclusively HTML, some of us use some CSS as well). This group has been...

darkphotonstudio ,

I'm a hopelessly terrible html scripter but even I grew frustrated with WYSIWYG tools like Dreamweaver. You're probably better off with a text editor and an open browser and just manually refresh the page as you go.

darkphotonstudio ,

I understand that, I really do. But some stuff just requires you learn a bit to make it work.

darkphotonstudio ,

Again, I agree. But basic HTML is barely coding. I'd just avoid CSS. Anyway, I genuinely wish you the best of luck finding a decent application.

darkphotonstudio ,

The thing ruining the social contract of the web is the profit motive

Dingdingdingdingding!

darkphotonstudio ,

This is a serious question, I'd love to hear some other views on this: should there be laws that assess new tech before it is allowed into the public sphere? How would such things be enforeced?

darkphotonstudio ,

Weird, I've survived without it for 8 years.

They actually said that? I'm not even going to bother watching that nonsense.

Idk how old your mother is but my dad is 80 (I'm 53) and he doesn't understand windowing at all. I always thought it strange he has never figured it out. Even phone UIs baffle him. Older generations inability to grasp the concepts behind computer interfaces seems so strange to me. I wonder if a command line interface would make more sense. I know that sounds crazy, but using bash, for example, is more straightforward, in a way. You can list what folder you're in, execute commands without any images or windows or other distractions. Mainly, it's memorisation, as opposed to the more abstract concepts behind desktop interfaces. Sorry, I'm rambling now lol.

Scribus Gets Huge Update (but the toolbar buttons are still too small to see!) (www.omgubuntu.co.uk)

I want to like Scribus, but every time I hear about it getting updated, I download it, open it, only to find these tiny toolbar icons that have no apparent way of being made bigger. This is always what prevents me from trying it out! Seems like kind of a basic design no-brainer. Grrr. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm on...

darkphotonstudio ,

You're so confidently incorrect about something you clearly don't know much about.
