Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

The highways are fine. The problem is that there's cars on them.

Just block off 4 lanes to be bus-only and 2 lanes to be bicycle only. Maybe a few more for train tracks.

Raivo wiped all of my TOTP codes

9 months ago, Raivo OTP for iOS was sold to Mobime. Raivo was hailed highly in terms of privacy, but was dethroned to 2FAS Auth after that incident. Today, Raivo launched an update, and after updating all of my entries were completely wiped. I didn't have a backup, but even if I did you now have to pay in order to import/export...

Why wouldn't you have backups? Of course OTPs are the most important thing to backup..

I don't think that would have enough RAM

Can we not criticize cars and also irresponsible e-bike riders.

Both should follow traffic laws and yield to peds.

Reminder: The DMV uses photos for facial recognition

This is half a decade old news, but I only found this out myself after it accidentally came up in conversation at the DMV. The worker would not have informed me if it hadn't come into conversation. Every DMV photo in the United States is being used for AI facial recognition, and nobody has talked about it for years. This is...

The EFF and ACLU employ a number of people, and some of those people exist to lobby the government to not make dumb laws.

Politicians don't understand technology, so they need lobbiests to explain to them how legislation could be bad for people from a technical perspective

When you fund the EFF, you get lobbiests on your behalf going to legislators to fix broken legislation. And lobbyists going to legislators to write good legislation to protect our rights.

When I was in Denmark I was shocked how many cameras there were, everywhere. I mean not just in the city, but everywhere on the countrywide.

Also Denmark is one of those weird countries where its illegal to have your map software tell you where the speed cameras are.

In general, it feels like Denmark loves panoptic surveillance.

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

Only Nordic countries think Denmark is central. And Norway isn't even in the EU.

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

Sounds like you haven't lived in Denmark for a while. Homes have cameras, beaches have cameras, forests have cameras, roads have cameras

The nature of these systems is that they’re going to kill innocent people and nobody is even going to know why.

You linked to a shitty website that blocks hardened browsers instead of the article on Ars. Downvoted.

Please re-post with a link to the actual article.

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

This. Please collectively downvote. This sort of thing is the proper use of the downvote button.

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

Downvotes are not "I disagree with this person"

A downvote used properly is to bury misinformation, low effort posts, off-topic posts, and as you say - violation of rules or attacks on others.

This is an example of a low effort post that can easily be misinformation because it cannot be verified.

Matrix has problems, but lack of clients and users isn't one of them

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

It supports unencrypted messages. Lots of metadata is not encrypted (eg all reactions).

Many orgs cant use software where users can send messages unencrypted. Its a security risk, even if the user did it by mistake.

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

That would fail a whole lotta regulatory requirements.

Alternatives to Google Docs/sheets?

What are people using in place of Google docs/sheets/etc? I'm looking for a simple program that syncs with the cloud so I can access my documents on my different computers or my Android phone. I run Windows 10 (don't crucify me). I use libre office for things that can stay on one computer, but for things like school notes,...

Looking for some Android apps

Having used iOS my entire life, the switch to GrapheneOS will be a big change. I have learned over the past year about Android, GrapheneOS, and apps to use. I managed to find most of the apps I was looking for, but there are some I struggled with. I had trouble finding privacy respecting, open source apps for the following...

Is Privacy Worth It? (blog.thenewoil.org)

When I announced I would be closing my communities earlier this year, a curious thing happened: a surprising number of regulars replied with some variation of “I think this is my exit.” While some were specifically talking about Matrix, claiming that mine was the only room they were really active in and therefore they saw no...

Gender bias in open source: Pull request acceptance of women versus men (www.researchgate.net)

Our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's [when their gender is hidden]. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless.

There's no reason people using tornado wouldn't have to disclose their sources to the authorities, same as cash.

But it does protect them from malicious actors.

I think you meant vendors of safes.

Wasn't the arrest over a year ago? How much time is left on the sentence?

This is terrible, but 5 years is pretty tolerable. Assange is in locked up for being a journalist and faces life in tortuous conditions.

They're not necessarily made for killing. Most people defending themself with a pistol (whose only purpose is for shooting humans) would not want to shoot for the head or chest

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

That doesn't apply to small amounts below $10k

But, again, the same applies. I deposit btc or cash into a bank, even $50k, then I disclose its source to the authorities, with the paperwork. But by using a privacy service, I can comply with the law and protect myself from malicious actors

Go open a bank account right now and try to deposit a briefcase full of $50,000

I've done this. They ask you for the paperwork documenting the source of the funds. Just follow the process. It doesn't matter if its fiat or crypto.

Was tornado cash made for laundering money?

My point is that gun manufacturers will say they make their products for defense, not killing. Knife manufacturers, same. Hammer manufacturers, same.

There's very few products which everyone can objectively say are designed for killing.

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

This. I guess people here aren't familiar with skeet

delirious_owl ,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

Uh, I started this thread, and I brought up other products: electric chairs and the guillotine.

And, no, hunting rifles are the worst kind of guns. They are definitely designed for killing. But my point was that not all guns are designed for killing.

What is the most appropriate way of tracking web traffic?

I have my personal blog, made with Hugo and hosted on GitHub pages. Initially I did not turn on any kind of web tracking / web analytics, because I do not like tracking at all. But I want to make my blog better and to achieve it, I need a feedback loop about traffic. For example, what are the most popular publications, or how...

delirious_owl ,

Yeah my point is you gotta self host to collect analytics without violating your visitor's privacy.
