electric_nan ,

To everyone in this thread, whoever you are or are not voting for: what is your plan if Trump wins? I think everyone agrees that it is pretty much 50/50 on him winning. What do you plan to do about the coming total fascist hellscape? Do you have plans and means to emigrate? Are you buying guns and ammo? Are you just gonna go along to get along?

electric_nan ,

"Super nuanced political opinions" such as being against an active genocide lol.

electric_nan ,

Ok gee golly mister, you convinced me to support a war criminal! I'm sure he'll win now that you've secured my support :)

electric_nan ,

Wait, I thought Biden was good, actually. Isn't he like our best president since FDR or something? Now you're telling me he's evil??

electric_nan ,

Trump isn't in charge right now. There is a genocide happening right now. Trump has nothing to do with that. How can you not want to pressure the guy that has the power right now to do something?

electric_nan ,

What Trump would do is an irrelevant question right now. This isn't about the future, it is about the present.

electric_nan ,

What pressure are you putting on the guy? Guaranteeing him your vote is the opposite of pressure. It reads as endorsement or at least tacit approval of his policies. Assuming Biden actually cares to win the election, the best thing to do is threaten to withhold your vote. He still has five months to change voters minds. Let him see the polling, let his campaign see the mood on social media. Genocide is a red line, and it's a low fucking bar.

electric_nan ,

And it is irrelevant either way. Do you think Trump has power to end this genocide right now? Yes or no?

electric_nan ,

Sorry if I am more concerned with the ongoing genocide supported by the current fascist in power, than with the potential continuation of the same genocide by the next fascist who may come to power.

You don't really need my answer, and I don't really need yours either.

electric_nan ,

Grown ups know that sometimes genocide is cool and good, actually.

electric_nan ,

Some principles ought to be inflexible. It's kind of the definition of a principle. I know what compromise is, and I know right from wrong. It's wrong to compromise on certain things. If growing up means forgetting that, then miss me with growing up.

electric_nan ,

What genocide in the world can I do anything about? My country does most of them, and I never support them. I've been protesting my whole life. I am always against genocide. That is a principle. Not one you seem to share, but to each their own I guess.

electric_nan ,

In what way am I flexible in my principles? I've never voted for a genocidaire in any other country either.

electric_nan ,

My homie went to a charter school in the 90s and actually did making a working moonshine still for a science project.

electric_nan ,

Damn, I wonder if China's thought of that? Like infiltrators and advance specops to secure high value infrastructure? Probably not.

electric_nan ,

Looks like a push to discredit Signal right now. While I know Signal isn't perfect, I do like it and I haven't seen anything that is better (on the whole). The 3rd "emoji-point" is quite an accusation, and I would love to see any evidence of this kind of thing, that didn't result from the cops unlocking a defendants phone, or having infiltrated a chat.

electric_nan ,

I have used xmpp a lot, but I can't really recommend it to friends and family as a secure messenger. There are too many compatibility issues between clients and servers. If your friend is on a client or server that doesn't support the same encryption protocols, then you can't have a secure chat. Basically there is too much user knowledge and effort required at this time, for xmpp to be a good, secure, general use chat. I very much look forward to this changing. I also really like Matrix, but it is still a bit rough around the edges as of my last check.

electric_nan ,

This is probably just Telegram seeing an opportunity to peel some users away from Signal during a period of heightened paranoia in the West (anti-genocide organizing).

electric_nan ,

That's great, and I'm happy it's working out for you. It's still kind of a bummer that this open protocol ends up fragmented across all those clients and severs. I've met other Linux enthusiasts online, connected with them via xmpp only to find we can't encrypt our chats. Neither of us wants to give up our preferred client for various reasons, so we have a non-working situation.

electric_nan ,

Sure there are workarounds, but every one of them erases a bit of convenience or is at odds with the benefits of federation. Again, I think XMPP is great, but I wish it was better. As it is now, it doesn't fully meet my needs better than Signal does.

electric_nan ,

I recently found out that these keys are nowadays embedded in the BIOS. The following command will retrieve it:

sudo strings /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM

This works even if you nuked Windows and installed Linux. Do note that this key will be locked to that particular hardware; you could reinstall Win on that specific computer, but you can't use that key to activate Win on a different machine.

electric_nan ,

And they won't let you out to kill all the birds either.

electric_nan ,

'Domestic' cats are the number one thing killing birds. I love my cats, but I don't let them outside unsupervised.

electric_nan ,

OK? Either way they kill a shitload of birds unnecessarily. I don't spray pesticides, I buy local produce. I can control my cats, so I do that too. Side benefit is that they'll probably live longer since they won't encounter the same diseases and dangers as they would outside.

electric_nan ,

Ok

electric_nan ,

If what you want is available from Walmart, you can order online (for store pickup)using a prepaid debit card, whatever name you want, and whatever email account you want. You just need the confirmation number when you go to pick up.

electric_nan ,

We should start our own privacy-focused network. We can call it APRA-NET!

electric_nan , (edited )

The US probably runs a huge number of TOR nodes, and can therefore do correlation analysis* to unmask TOR users. I'm not an expert, so don't take this statement at face value, but that's my understanding. Also keep in mind that if your threat model includes the NSA or similar agencies, you are probably overly paranoid or else you are fucked.

*edit to add: this is called a "Sybil" attack. Look it up in relation to TOR. Again, this doesn't mean that TOR isn't perfectly secure for most threat models, but neither is it impervious.

electric_nan ,

How would I have specific evidence that US intelligence (who created TOR, btw) runs a large number (majority?) of exit nodes? I happen to think it is quite likely, but if you read my comment carefully, you can see that I did not present a statement of fact. It's not 'misinformation' but I would understand if you wanted to call it FUD.

electric_nan ,

Neat.

Qbit + VPN in truenas?

I'm trying to figure out how can I install a VPN on truenas that hides my IP. I have tailscale running so I can remotely access Nextcloud and manage it doesn't hide my IP. Wouldn't really throught on using it but my country recently published a law to lick Big Corpo in the ass better, the fines are pretty big so that's why I'm...

electric_nan ,

I had someone help me set something similar up but I don't remember the exact details. Something like making the qBit user unable to use any interface but the TUN.

electric_nan ,

I know about that setting, but this was different. It relies on Linux permissions. Like you have a dedicated 'user' for running qBit, and that user has no privileges for any network interface other than the VPN.

electric_nan ,

Yeah that rings a bell. Weirdly I woke up this morning to an abuse complaint from my hosting provider after years of no issues.

electric_nan ,

Not if I block all the ads, they can't!

electric_nan ,

I mean I was kind of joking. Of course this news is as awful as it is unsurprising. But I really feel like there aren't many spaces where I would targeted ads from this. I torrent all the media I consume. I have a system wide adblocker on my phone, and ublock in all my browsers. I don't use any commercial social media.

electric_nan ,

I've been thinking about a network of private license plate reading cameras that only keep track of known cop license plates.

electric_nan ,

Hey, they also needed more people to play cricket with.

electric_nan ,

Everyone thinking this was a business blunder... People got paid a lot of money to kill this site. It served in its own small way, to give workers a bit of power in relation to employers and that was unacceptable.

electric_nan ,

What about your preferences/configs/files (when you spun up a fresh one)?

electric_nan ,

If you have all of that set up then, what benefit is there to blowing away your container and spinning up a 'fresh' one? I've never been able to wrap my head around docker, and I think this is a big part of it.

electric_nan ,

I've played with it a bit. I think I was using something called DockStarter and Portainer. Like I said though, I could never quite grasp what was going on. Now for my home webapps I use Yunohost, and for my media server I use Swizzin CE. I've found these to be a lot easier, but I will try Docker again sometime.

electric_nan ,

Business criminals pumping up the bottom line ahead of earnings calls.

Signal requiring phone number, thoughts on anonymity?

signal requires a phone number to sign up. a phone number could be used to trace your signal account back to you. so why do people, especially privacy enthusiasts and experts (like edward snowden), still use it and endorse it when it lacks anonymity in that sense? i get that people could use a voip number or something to sign...

electric_nan ,

It's $5/mo from jmp.chat

electric_nan ,

Gotcha. It's worth it for me, but cheaper is better! You can probably use a google voice number (which is free) to register Signal.
