Unfortunately, as much as I like and use firefox on both pc and mobile, chrome and chromium based browsers dominate the market. It doesn't help that they come pre-installed in both cases.

fatalError ,

So not only is it training AI on your data, but you're the one paying for the storage and the energy to do so.

fatalError , (edited )

Well, technically you could pay cash on delivery, at least for physical goods. But card payments are just conveniant.

The only thing better imo, is nfc payment with phone just because fingerprint scan lets me pay without a pin and without compomising on security, so it's a tiny bit faster and more conveniant with no drawbacks.

For small amounts amounts either card or phone is fine.

I only carry cash as backup

fatalError ,

Not every country out there has a violent society looking for the next easy target to rob.

fatalError ,

Payment on delivery is still very much a thing here. Literally all food delivery allows it.

The majority of online retailers allow it too, though some of them charge the equivalent of ~1€ if you do choose it.

I prefere using it when I don't know much about the store or if I know the store is too big to care about their customers and I had orders being delayed by them in the past. It's in their best interest to deliver it asap if they didn't get the money yet.

Also, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to deal with goods damaged during shipping, if the box is damaged you just refuse it and don't have to wait x amount of days to get the money back into your account.

That may help in the case of a properly installed usb port, but what if the port is upside down? Or what if it's a vertical port? Is upside left or right?

fatalError ,

Not talking about my ports. Also ports can be installed the wrong way by the manufacturer. I had a pc case that the front usb ports upside down. But again, usb ports can be installed vertically, in which case it won't matter if you know which is up or down your usb plug, because now it's left or right

fatalError ,

What about the back of your tv? Or friend's PC? Or library computer? Or phone charger? Or... Any other Universal device using the Universal Serial Bus...

You may learn YOUR devices, but you may also have to interact with other devices at times and USB didn't make it easy in the past.

Now, type C is a thing and it helps with plugging it in right the first time, but that one has the HUGE issue with allowing any protocol since USB 1.0 and everyrhing else is optional. So even though you can plug a type C monitor into a type C microphone, nothing will happen, so it's not stupid proof anymore.

fatalError ,

My bet is on density. You cram so much in such a tiny space, so any tiny imperfection or fault will corrupt the data or render the drive unusable.

fatalError ,

Hey, capitalism is only good when it makes the rich richer...

fatalError ,

Right... Except the average person, we can't have that

fatalError ,

What about DLCs? And micro-transactions? And lack of optimisations?
Base games these days are more like beta versions of what used to be provided in the past... It kinda feels like shrinkflation, price is the same but you get a lot less, both in quality and quantity.

fatalError ,

Did thoes defaults include XMP though? XMP is also overclocking.

fatalError ,

I guess not for your specific cpu, but Asus fried some ryzen 7000 cpus with XMP last year

fatalError , (edited )

On tiktok too, where else.

fatalError ,

Google TV can run the vastly superior Smarttube app, no ads, double the framerate, much better experience.

fatalError ,

I wish... 8C with heavy rain is pretty far from ideal. Light jacket is enough, but umbrella and weather proof shoes also needed. YMMV

fatalError ,

That litter box looks tiny or these are some very large tiles. Either way it's probably worth getting a covered litter box, no more sand everywhere

Not all bots are bad, the piped bot is nice and there are others too

fatalError ,

This... Also my water already comes at 10C in the summer, even less in the winter... Any colder and you'd have to bite and chew it rather than drink...

Same place where you go bankrupt by calling an ambulance... And they consider themselves a developed country lol

What would you like to see in a house IT setup?

Currently remodeling a domicile, with the sweet and expensive ability to add anything I want within reason. I plan on modernizing the place to bring it into the 21st century because this house deserves it (just a great structure with lots of history and nearing it's centennial birthday)....

Unfortunately Zigbee is precisely 2.4GHz, which isn't used much for phones and laptops, but still widely used in TVs, vacuum robots and other smart devices that don't need much bandwidth.

fatalError ,

2.4GHz ia good in theory, in practice tho, every technology especially the open protocols use it so there is a lot of interference. I know that because I had to lower the 2.4GHz wifi power by a lot so it doesn't cause issues with the zigbee mesh.

As for tv I would agree if TVs came with gigabit NIC, but the majority comes with 100mbps card, so if you want to stream some high quality 100+mbps content you have no other option but to use the wifi or give up the usb port for a usb ethernet nic or use a usb hub. Not pretty solitions for sure.

And then you have the robot vacuum which can only use 2.4GHz wifi for obvious reasons. And people might have IPcams which are also on wifi.

fatalError ,

Zwave is nice, but a lot more expensive due to hardware certification costs

Judging by the amount of downvotes, I think the /s would've helped at the end.

It probably takes 15 seconds to put the address into street view and have a look around. Shouldn't be too dificult to validate the photo. Not sure if there are any privacy policies preventing that, but I doubt it.

Israel quietly rolled out a mass facial recognition program in the Gaza Strip (www.theverge.com)

Israel has deployed a mass facial recognition program in the Gaza Strip, creating a database of Palestinians without their knowledge or consent, The New York Times reports. The program, which was created after the October 7th attacks, uses technology from Google Photos as well as a custom tool built by the Tel Aviv-based company...

I don't think anyone would risk that with GDPR.

Which is why u get fireworks when someone plugs in a random usb drive they've found in the parking lot, looks at stuxnet

Apple Walks Back Decision to Disable Home Screen Web Apps in the EU (www.macrumors.com)

Following the release of the second beta version of iOS 17.4, it emerged that Apple had restricted the functionality of iOS web apps in the EU. Web apps could no longer launch from the ‌Home Screen‌ in their own top-level window that takes up the entire screen, relegating them to a simple shortcut with an option to open...

fatalError ,

It would be good, but not better. Why do people like apps so much? I hate them... Like, there is so much browsers can do these days, there is no point in having to install so much crap on our phones...

Why would I have to download an app that has so many permissions, syphon my data, run in the background and drain my battery, when 90% of the stuff can stay in the browser?

The only few advantages I can think off that an app can bring are the following:

  • they can work offline, some of them at least, half my apps probably won't
  • better security, that's mostly for bank apps, not really needed for many other cases
  • marginally faster load times
  • higher complexity, devs have a bit more freedom I guess

Most use cases don't require either of these.

fatalError ,

I wasn't saying it shouldn't be an option. I do believe in third party app stores, which is why I have an Android and I download many of my apps fron f-droid.

It just feels like every other website I browse to on the phone has at least an annoying popup asking me to download their app... And at the worst it won't let me browse at all, unless I switch to desktop mode and get full functionality, but UI doesn't scale well.

What I am saying is, I don't need an app for facebook, reddit, lemmy, youtube, spotify, uber, carrefour and the list can go on and on... If it doesn't work offline, I don't want an app for it. And yes, I know you can download music and videos for offline use, but I don't, so just let me use the webapp... I undertand the benefits of an app, I just don't feel like keeping an app for that once a week I open reddit to look up some niche sub.

fatalError ,

Why would it be bad to have alternatives? Stick to the built-in store if you want to, but let others have the freedom to choose.

Any company locking people to their own platform should be forced to allow alternatives.

Switzerland is not in the EU. Also even if it was, it's not illegal to design/manufacture solutions that don't comply with GDPR. They just can't be sold in the EU.

Also, data collection absolutely requires consent, it's why cookie popups exist on every website.

fatalError ,

Yeah, looks like the mobile web version of youtube, but on desktop.

fatalError ,

Aren't these *arr software using public trackers? If that is the case I recommend private trackers. A lot more reliable with a better database. Also some allow you to create re-seed requests for dead torrents.

fatalError ,

It's probably because running such old hardware means your daily usage wouldn't show much difference between the 2 setups. If you mainly browse the internet or play gpu boumd games, you simply wouldn't notice a huge difference.

Change that use case to cpu bound games or other cpu intensive tasks and you would likely see a not insignificant difference.

Also newer hardware is more efficient(used to at least), so you should see lower power draw for the same performance or better performance for the same power draw.

So just because you don't see a difference, it doesn't mean it's not there.

fatalError ,

Since when can you not spoof any of that? Grab a used android phone from local used market. Put any rooted rom on it. Spoof the gps... Device id is irrelevant at that point. As for origin, not sure what you mean by that, you can just order the starlink equipment to a random address in a different country, it will look legit. As others said, it's trivial to bypass/spoof all that metadata.

Once you got the connection up and running you just use a vpn to hide everyrhing.

The only thing they could do is block starlink for a whole region, that would affect everyone in there. But you still couldn't distinguish who is using the service.

fatalError ,

With Google TV/Android TV almost anything can be uninstalled or at least disabled with ADB.

fatalError ,

If you go the zigbee route I recommend this one, works well and supports direct binding too: https://zigbee.blakadder.com/Gledopto_GL-SD-001.html

Stay away from the Moes, takes like 1.5sec to get to full brightness when turning on and you can't get rid of the delay.

If you are fine with relays as well look into Nous modules, I got a dual channel relay module from them that works very well, also supports direct binding. They might have dimmers too, but I haven't used them myself.

All these require neutral though, can't speak of their non-neutral versions.

fatalError ,

That's fine, the cat is an asshole anyway. I know that as I've always had cats. They are evil... Evil... Fluffy... Assholes.

fatalError ,

Don't worry, u ain't missing much, only crap heatspreaders that make heat transfer horrible, huge post times due to memory training... Fun times

fatalError ,

Not all IoT is bad... If you decide to get some cloud IoT and keep it on the main network that's on you, but you could have a separate vlan or even a separate protocol like zigbee and z-wave to secure these devices and control them locally with home assistant. It might not be good enough for highly sensitive enterprise environments, but more than enough for average Joe who's not being targeted by APTs or espionage

fatalError ,

So not only do they spy on you, but you're also indirectly paying for it through taxes

fatalError ,

While I do agree with you, some cheats manipulate the memory itself so you would need some elevated privilages to dectect them as the cheats themsevles run with these privileges

fatalError ,

At work I guess you only do work related stuff, so at the end of the day it's only work-related data that the browser has access to. Why would it matter to you?

99.9% of my the personal browsing I do is in firefox both on phone and desktop, but on work laptop I use Edge because 1. the work web-apps seem to favour chromium based browsers and 2. it's not my data so I don't really care about the privacy of my company's data, they have a data privacy officer to worry about that.
