The carrier who's paying for your traffic. You're most likely going to use a lot more data on a computer than actually on your phone.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Unlimited data for your phone, not your computer.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Less than it would be if they expected you to go full ham 24/7.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Is 5640 RPM acceptable? WD reds are all about 5400rpm and are basically the gold standard for NAS HDDs.

You can shuck them out of WD easy store drives sold at best buy. They're white label drives from WD, but they're all based on the red/red pro drives.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Just know that higher RPM doesn't necessarily mean higher noise. In my experience Helium filled drives can be pretty quiet, and basically all really high capacity drives are helium filled.

I have an arm of shucked WD drives and while I can hear them from time to time, they're not bad. Also your case makes a huge difference. Make sure the drives are on rubber isolators, and what they're mounted on can't vibrate to make any noise. The only noise I hear from these drives is when they first spin up after being idled.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I'm pretty sure that's only a theory and not something that's ever actually been confirmed. That said people on /r/datahoarder have raved about those drives for 5+ years at this point, and so far all 6 of my drives have been going strong after 6 years of constant abuse.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Tesla: people really like that you can just order a car online and not have to deal with slimey sales tactics. What can we do to fuck even that up too?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Did you expect a doorbell with a camera built into it to not be "smart"?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

That’s not necessarily what a “smart” device is.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Windows has a lovely “feature” where it installs the bootloader on a secondary drive if there’s one connected. It doesn’t install it on drive 1 and drive 2, just drive 2. I always disconnect all secondary drives before installing windows for this very reason.

That said you can configure the windows bootloader to recognize your Linux (or grub) and just use that to manage booting two OSes and it’s less likely to not destroy things.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Something along the lines of this

Supposedly easybcd supports efi now so you should be able to use that to do all the config.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

He was responsible for the figurative nosedive my boss' previous company did. Now he's responsible for the literal nosedive of Boeing.

This man is a professional company ruiner, not just a scape goat.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

This looks like something you'd see on /r/schizophreniarides

Side note but has that or InfowarriorRides migrated to lemmy yet?

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Any company that's passing 120 (or god forbid 240v) into those tiny little plugs with almost no insulation between them is begging to be sued for electrocuting people. No device used in the bathroom should be passing straight 120v through a connector like that.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

My favorite was devices that just said 12v X Amps, but never specified center positive or center negative.

Fuck you Sony, stop using center negative. It's a crime against humanity.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

“Photoshopping” something bad existed for a long time at this point.AI generated images doesn’t really change anything other then the entire photo being fake instead of just a small section.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The problem is devices still made LONG after 4G came out with 2 or 3G. My friends 2016 Hyundai has 2G for its blue link service that now doesn’t work. My 2018 Outback uses 3G for its Starlink system, but I ripped that box out long ago.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Activation locks are to deter theft, which they’re incredibly good at.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,
fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

That sounds like the institution's fault not Apple's.

Institutions have been unloading machines with bios passwords for eons, it's nothing really new other than it's much harder to bypass it.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I moved on to Airpods shortly after they came out and honestly I have had 0 desire to use wired headphones with a phone. The Airpods pro sound great for earbuds.

If I want a real super high quality audio experience I'd use a dedicated DAC and AMP because the ones in phones have never been amazing. Plus if I'm out and about there's probably too much background noise to even appreciate good headphones.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

What I hate is that the alternative that they're switching to is RCS, which puts control of your texting in the hands of your carrier. iMessage is great because you don't need a phone number, I can send texts to my moms iPad even though she doesn't have an iPhone.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

They make over the ear bluetooth headphones too.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I liked the server I set up the other day. 512 gigs of ram, 1 gig swap.

We're using maybe 100gigs currently.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

That doesn’t stop the media industry.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

They don't even need to win the case. They just need to bully the smaller person until they go bankrupt and shut down.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Mac OS has has this nailed down basically perfectly for over 10 years now, even windows has been great in the last 5+ years. Not having scaling done right in the age of 4k displays being cheap is a sin.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

14.4 wasn't that major of an update, it was mostly the security updates.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Because of the security update part of things.

From the article:

The USB hub issue may be related to the USB security prompts that Apple introduced in macOS 13 Ventura

What's the real world connection speed from your residential IP to your Server?

I'm using contabo and the VPS I got is advertised as 1 Gigabit. When I do a speedtest or use iperf3 to connect to public servers I get pretty close to 1 Gigabit. But from my residential IP the speed drops down to 100-250 Mbit/s. My home internet connection can handle 500 Mbit just fine....

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

1 gbit because google fiber is 1gbit but I typically get 1.2 because they overprovision it so much.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Namecheap because I pay 88 cents a year for my domain.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

(Numbers).xyz

I only use it for stuff for me. If you do a real name it’s more.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Isn't it honey AND high fructose corn syrup, and with honey being above the syrup it's mostly honey?

Are microplastics from car tyres contributing to heart disease?

"Add one more likely culprit to the long list of known cardiovascular risk factors including red meat, butter, smoking and stress: microplastics.

"In a study released Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, an international team of physicians and researchers showed that surgical patients who had a build-up of micro and nanoplastics in their arterial plaque had a 2.1 times greater risk of nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal stroke or death from any cause in the three years post surgery than those who did not."

https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-03-07/microplastics-may-be-risk-factor-for-cardiovascular-disease

The research is particularly noteworthy, given that one of the biggest sources of microplastic pollution is the synthetic rubber in car tyres: https://aus.social/@ajsadauskas/112015017609398126

So it's not just the sedentary lifestyles that car-dependent planning encourages that's causing health issues.

And it's not just exhaust fumes either.

There's also the health impacts of microplastics, including from car tyres.

Worth noting as well that internal documents from the big oil companies show that they knew since the 1970s that recycling wasn't going to solve the problem of plastic pollution. They promoted it anyway: https://aus.social/@ajsadauskas/112064312364853769

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Awareness mostly. The general public didn't really know anything about micro plastics until like 2023.

Amazon's Hidden Chatbot Recommends Nazi Books and Lies About Amazon Working Conditions (www.404media.co)

An Amazon chatbot that’s supposed to surface useful information from customer reviews of specific products will also recommend a variety of racist books, lie about working conditions at Amazon, and write a cover letter for a job application with entirely made up work experience when asked, 404 Media has found.

Is there a specific list I need to enable? Because I have UBO and it's showing me the subscribe to read the full article thing.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The archive link is also behind the wall.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

It's the bottom that's the problem. You can read the first paragraph or two just fine.

How old is your machine? If it's new enough to run windows 11 then it probably also supports modern standby (aka S0 standby). When plugged in during "sleep" it's actually on, and should be doing the updates for you.

That said my work laptop only gets used during work hours and it almost always gets it's updates done while I'm doing stuff throughout the day, and it just needs a quick reboot to finish.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Basically all modern car body panels are held together with basically a really strong glue.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

But the battery pack is far and away more expensive than the engine. Shit far and away more expensive than the engine AND transmission. Shit like half an EVs price is the battery.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

Low 0-60 times are inherent to EVs. There's no transmission and the motor has a wide efficiency area. It's basically hard to make a non dual motor EV accelerate slowly. Single motor ones aren't quick, but you won't get AWD if that's a thing you desire.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

What about being an EU citizens prevents from from collecting any data on you? They're still able to collect a lot of data.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

In my Subaru it's a seperate box under the radio. It intercepts the front speakers and microphone from the radio, so with a custom harness I can bypass it. Obviously that varies by make, model, and trim.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I'm sure insurance is gonna stop caring as soon as they get a notice saying that the person sold the car.

The mic needs active power. If you ignore the mic a simple pig tail adapter works without cutting up your cars cabling.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

I think every old Ranger is begging to be put out of it's misery. Those cars were piles of shit when new, and even bigger piles of shit now that they're old.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble ,

The power draw is being limited, but not because the CPU or GPU are running too hot (they'll be in the mid 80s or even 70s). It's when the power delivery parts (inside the laptop) get too hot to keep up and it can't keep up. You can override those with programs like throttlestop, but the battery will drop MUCH quicker. When it's hot the PL1 and PL2 drop to about 25 watts which is basically unusable on 11th gen i9, but it easily has the head room for 45-55 watts. GPU is largely unaffected which is weird. I've seen it get limited to around 60 watts, but the 3080 mobile below 80 watts is also awful.

For monitoring power usage I use hwinfo 64 in windows, I'm not sure if the portable version would work.
